If Geelong fails during this years finals (like last season) is this list capable of taking us to a flag?

If some players (we all know who) are never going to take us to a flag what should we do with them?

If Geelong has another failed final series, should they top up for 2018, or do a mini rebuild and put flag aspirations off for a few years?

These hypothetical questions have nothing to do with our current position on the ladder or recent game results.

We'll conclude round 18 sitting 2nd on the ladder, in a season with no real standout team. If we fizzle out come finals fair enough to start getting concerned, but at the moment there's a lot to look forward to.

If by 'this list' you mean Danger and Selwood, then yes. Or most likely yes. We don't have nearly enough quality youth on the list as it stands to prevent us sliding a fair way down the ladder when these two guys retire.

This doesn't mean however that it was wrong to go all out now, nor that the situation can't change with a few good draft hauls and/or some more good recruiting a la Zach Tuohy and Lachie Henderson.

Age-wise I think this list has till 2020-21 so a couple of good post-seasons could see us in very good shape, and one interstate loss to Adelaide aside we are still in promising shape this year.

Yep definitely this year (looks like we won't be good enough) then it's over. Melbourne and Essendon will overtake us next year and Swans/Dogs will get back above. Simply must look to aggressively transitioning our list next year and inject more offensive and defensive speed and spark. We are lacking big time in those areas. Won't change overnight but sticking with such a tired, one paced, limited and inconsistent bunch would be beyond silly.

If we manage to get Ablett back and maybe a couple of other handy recruits then I can see us challenging in 2018 and 2019, but I feel we have 2 years to really strike. Selwood, Hawkins and Taylor have been the spine of this team for a while, we can add Dangerfield to that now.

We have a decent young crop, but it's nothing great. We'll have Dangerfield and Selwood guiding us into the next phase which hopefully is something special.

God, get over the supercoach stats. The footy media and AFL coaches use supercoach stats, yet some of you are too good for them? Get a life.

Some people in this forum are just so ****ing obnoxious.

And I think Selwood will drop off quite quickly when the time comes........charging from the front relentlessly, time and time again, will eventually take its toll.

Same will likely happen to Hawkins too, though for not the same reasons.

A 34 year old cooked Ablett will not improve this list, neither will free agents like Pittard who don't have room to improve and have reached their heights. Players like Lang haven't even reached any peak what so ever
We are not Collingwood, we don't need to recruit senior players like they have with Dunn and Wells.

"With this list"? I dunno. Lists change by about 20% most seasons.

Ours will keep evolving.

I think we should always be transitioning and challenging - every year. Or least aiming for that, which is exactly what the club is out to achieve.

I like our aims, culture, club ethos, and results this Century. More of the same please.

The guys you listed in the bold (with the exception of menzel but we cant afford to rely on him because of the knee risk) are not in our best 10 and some aren't in our best 22.

Our best players are Danger Selwood Hawkins Duncan Henderson Tuohy and Taylor (Menzel). Of that lot only taylor is on the decline Danger is the best player in the league Joel is elite and thr other 4 are in their prime ages and arguably in career best form. So while they remain so we can win a flag we just need to get our tactics right and resolve some of our mental performance issues in big finals (IMO). It would help if we continue to bring best 22 players in to improve our chances but i think we can win this year with what we have.

To answer your question about next year or 2020 2018 for two reasons: one the standard of the comp is at's weak as it's ever been and who knows if it will still be this weak in 2020 and who knows if our best players will still be at their peak in 2020. We have come a fair way down the road with this 'rebuild while attacking a flag' strategy and now isn't the time to turn back.

We're 2nd on the ladder despite blooding 8 kids. I think only North Melbourne and Carlton have blooded more kids than us this year. Look where those two teams are on the ladder.

If anything our window has only just opened despite the media and opposition supporters saying we're topping up to try and win another flag before we have to rebuild. These same people have been predicting us to tumble down the ladder every year since 2009.

We've been 'up' since we made the prelim in 2004, having only missed the finals twice since then (finished 10th both years) despite the fact that we've turned over an entire playing list during that time. Only Lonergan and Mackie remain from our 2004 playing list and neither of them were in the team that pushed the all conquering Brisbane Lions to within 2 kicks in the prelim.

I'm very happy with what our kids have shown so far. Cockatoo and Parfitt will be champions, Gardner and Buzza will hold down the bookends for a good decade or so. Parsons and Simpson will be solid players for us.

Having said that, we aren't a great side this year, but there are no great sides in the league this year. Adelaide being top of the ladder and Richmond being in the top 4 should give indication of how weak the league is this year. We're as good a chance as any to win this year's flag.

Club 'Windows' I believe in.
I.e "you're relevant, you need to get the right tv deals. The right sponsors. Look after your supporters, and solidify the brand".

Premiership Windows can go and get Effed. You're only in one if you're playing in the prelim.
End of story.

One reason I give little credence to future predictions such as this... Read the main board ladder predictions thread.
Dogs and West Coast were really high up in most sides, as were the Hawks. No one foresaw the fall Freo took in 2016 on the back of minor premiers. Too hard to predict this season let alone the next one or two in advance.
Let's see what happens after the trade period, Ablett and possibly Hopper might help us in 2018, removing some that don't perform likewise might help the team.

Fair enough anything can happen I think a few of them will be tough to hold out. Isn't the end of the world these clubs have been down the bottom and regularly got picks we could only dream of.

It's hard to tell with Geelong, we've been playing finals for so long now and every year people tell us we'll slide and yet again we sit 2nd on the ladder. The only worrying position for me is the forward line but if we can somehow manage to get all of Cocky, Gregson, Linc fit and firing whilst blooding another tall (Buzz) then we'll still be around the mark for a few more years.

I think the problem is more with Guthrie, Murdoch, Motlop, Kolo, Stanley and Thurlow (yes I know bit of an excuse this year). They are the group that can hold us up the top but collectively they must step up and it's hard to be confident in them.

Yeah it's tough especially when Murdoch has had the best year out of all the above mentioned.

I sincerely believe that, in a team strategy thread like this one, anyone even mentioning supercoach or supercoach scores or dreamteam or any of the other stat-worshipping shite that abounds these days as data supporting their argument should have their oxygen witheld for five minutes.

It's bullshit. All of it.

Hey. Leave Blakey's oxygen alone or I'm calling the police.
