Is Perrie Right?

if the player (even played out of position) is the best we have, it's the best we have. however, when judged in their proper context, i.e. Perrie is a complementary forward, 3rd tall; then you can judge them better.

I can tell you, that if we were forced to play Ben Hart & Nigel Smart in the spine (as we often had to in the early years) that no matter how valiently they battled, we wouldn't have won a premiership. It wasn't wasn't Nigel Smart's fault that he couldn't stand Tony Lockett, and it's not Perrie's fault he's forced into being our no.1 marking target in the forward line.

put him in his proper position, and I am not sure there's many better 3rd talls in the league.

And herein lies the tangy mayonnaise on the Pizza Hut kid's menu submarine.

Nathan Bassett is the perfect example of this phenomenon in action.

When he was forced to play at CHB/FB on the likes of Alistair Lynch and Tredders and was duly dismantled there were so many critical of him and a perceived lack of ability.

With the emergence of Rutten/KMac/Bock as premier defensive options he moved to third-up defender and is one of the best in the league at it, officially.

All this critisim wouldn't come if someone just taught him how to kick. It's as simple as that, just spend session after session with him

Carl,

I reckon you've missed the point. what makes you think the players give a shit about your (or my) praise? that's an assumption without merit. I am sure they couldn't give a fig if you lived or died (within reason of course).

what he's saying, politely is "who the **** are you, and what do you know?" and frankly it's a fair point. supporters have a right to an opinion, not an opinion that's right.
There's certainly some point-missing going on, but I'm pretty sure it's not me.

Agreed that Perrie would value earning the respect of his team mates, the coaching staff and the opposition well above earning the respect of the crowd. However it is naïve to think that players don't give a shit about what the fans think. Surely you are not oblivious to the role ego plays in professional sport? Neil Craig has even talked about the negative effect the crowd was having on 'much-maligned' Burton and Perrie a few years ago. Craig described them as high maintenance players and said that it required constant work to maintain their self-confidence because of the (sometimes) scathing criticism they were receiving from supporters. I also remember Terry Wallace talking about the respect he won from the Bulldogs fans after he switched from Hawthorn when he didn't miss any games despite having his jaw broken and wired up.

As for "what do we know?" you are 100% right. We don't know all that goes on behind the scenes at an AFL club. Clubs are understandably very protective of their game plans, their tactics and details on which players are carrying injuries. The clubs could share this information if they wanted to - the fans are dying to hear it I'm sure. But obviously they are not going to, so we are left in the dark on a number of issues. That's fine, but they cannot have it both ways. They can't keep everything in house, releasing only restricted information, then label the fans uninformed.

As for your "3rd forward comparison" that you have used a few times, I don't think it is relevant to compare Perrie's output to, say, a Brent Staker from West Coast when he plays up forward. The Eagles will direct the bulk of their attacks to Lynch and Hansen - Staker gets the leftovers. Perrie, whether he would be better suited as our 3rd forward or not, is our No. 1 target. Whilst Perrie will attract a better defender that Staker, you'd expect his numbers to be better because of the sheer amount of ball heading his way.

I agree wholeheartedly with your last point though - it is not Perrie's fault that our No. 1 key forward kicks helicopter punts. Critics like myself need to be careful that we don't criticise Perrie for what is a flaw (perhaps the only one) in the club's drafting and recruiting over the last 7-8 seasons and some bad luck with injuries. Will take it on board :thumbsu:

gosh, really? :D

um... about that point missing thing?

you're having a laugh aren't you?

would you expect an opposition forward standing Rutten to have better numbers than the guy standing Stevens?

Ok, maybe not Rutten, AA No. 2 coming up... :D But are you saying that all No. 1 key defenders are of Rutten's quality?

You may have noticed Pavlich's numbers are down this season. Pavlich isn't playing on better opponents than last year. Simply Tarrant is attracting some of the footy that would have gone Pav's way last year. It is not just the quality of the defender, the supply also has a bearing on your numbers and the number of contests you will be in.
