I think he is, stats seem to say so too.

From 108 matches...

Batting:

Runs: 3200
Average: 40.46
SR: 84.71
50's: 4
100's: 14
HS: 136*

Bowling:

Wickets: 115
Average: 27.77
Econ: 4.86
SR: 34.2
BB: 4/36
4wi: 3

Ridiculously good limited-overs cricketer, he's been in amazing form with bat and ball for a while now. Could be picked on either specialty. Also one of the best fielders in the world as he's got the safest pair of hands. Gun. :thumbsu:

Goes close. Needs to kick on a bit with the bat once he hits 50, has a habit of getting out around there after a blistering start.

A few more 100s and you'd have to say he is.

Handy knack of picking up wickets when we need them too.

both averages are bound to improve as well, you'd have to say. i'm a bit reluctant to totally agree since it's on the back of windies/pak, but there's no reason why he wouldn't hold his own against stronger teams.

The first IPL really gave him a lot of confidence. He announced himself then. He single handedly won us the champions trophy when he hit hundreds in the semi and the final.
Allows us good batting/bowling depth.

Fixed the part underlined. Didn't think he had 14 ODI centuries ;)

Definitely the best all rounder going around, hard to say best ODI player as Tendulkar just smoked a 200 and he smoked a 175 against us.

Yes He Is.

He would be picked on either discipline, and that's no even taking into account his fiedling. Very reliable with the ball, explosive and consistent with the bat. If he fails in the 1st innings in one discipline, he'll hit back in the 2nd with the other discipline.

He's not only efficient with the ball, but he takes wickets when needed and can bowl at the end of the innings. When batting, he gives the team an amazing start not only scoring a bunch of runs, but gets them quickly. You can't ask for much more.

Gives the team so much variety unlike any other player in the world.

Does it again - out for 53.

Really needs to kick on in ODIs. Could have led his team to glory in this match and threw it away with a silly shot.

Hes just not converting of late and his scoring rate has slipped compared to the summer and the 1st ODI in NZ.

Very good player, nobody can doubt that anymore, but not the best in the world. Sachin Tendulkar recently has been amazing, sure he doesn't bowl but he destroys very good bowling attacks. Probably the most inform allrounder in the world.

Hmmm, IMO he comes very close at the moment.
A vital cog in our odi side, maybe needs to get more from his starts. Otherwise, can't fault him much.

Was fascinating listening to Shane Warne during the Summer about how he gave Watson more responsibility in the IPL, and he thought this was the start of the Shane Watson we are seeing right now. Say what you like about Warne off the ground, but he has one of the most astute cricketing brains in the world.

He has always been a gun in the making.

Imo in time, injury permitting, he can become the best ranked player in in tests, and ODI's.

Safest slips cordon in the world.

Ponting, White and Watson. Clarke to the spinners, and fourth if we need it. Hussey in the gully.

What more could you ask for?
