There are a few topics on the board already re Woewodin offering congratulations etc. I congratulate him also.

He's a fine player & appears to be a nice bloke but really, is he the "fairest & the best" in the comp?

I don't think so.

Ask yourself this. If he was up for trade who would you be prepared to give up for him?

More to the point; who wouldn't you give up for him?

No disrespect to Shane, but is it advisable to tip you hair and play out of the middle, if you want to win a Brownlow...

Surely now the AFLPA MVP is regarded more of a personal achievement..

It is voted by your peers..

That's not the point is it.

You are talking about an MVP which is a different concept.

The Brownlow capyures everyone's attention because it does give some measure of how players performed 'in the heat of battle' and how consistently they could do it.

By that measure Woewodin was the winner. That does not mean that he is the best available player, maybe that they were not as consistent.

Fred Goldsmith is 1 But there may have been another. Are fullbacks good players, or are they there to stop good players.

In other words is Fletcher an effective player, or is he a good player.

I reckon Fletcher is a out of the ordinary for a fullback. He is a good player as well as an effective fullback.

A lot of fullbacks, while effective, can't be described as good players (Ingerson, Dunkley for example).

If you were a recruiter, who would you take, a full back who stops his opponent regularly or a midfielder (dime a dozen, probably a bit harsh) who kick the ball to open space 25 to 30 times a game.

Not disagreeing with you on that point Rooboy Fullbacks are the foundation of a side.

But that is the defensive aspect, besides aren't defenders really failed forwards

Dunkley was a top full forward in Tasmania (this is not humour).

Kingsley Hunter and Leppitsch have also been tried as forwards.

Defenders usually have failed in other positions but have good concentration

Ash McIntosh is an excellent forward too, but can't be played there full time because of his knees. But that's where he started his career. He had an awesome season in 98, was WCEclub champion as well as AA full back, but polled only 6 Brownlow votes... The fact is that a full back's performance is always speculative. A good day by the FB is viewed more as the FF's bad day. Pity, but at least it means SOS hasn't won.

Woewodin- I'm thrilled he won. He's a great guy who's done it tough (and he's only the 4th WAussie medallist

), but I don't believe he has been the seasons best and fairest. With the 3-2-1 system, yoú're always going to get players taking votes off their teamates, and as mentioned certain positions and players just don't get noticed. [For example, Dean Kemp. Supurb player, one of our best EVER, averaged 4 votes a year before this season.] Congratulations.

Don, Fred Goldsmith won a Brownlow Medal, and Verdun Howell was the only other Full-back to have won a Brownlow Medal.
The won their medals in 1955 and 1959 respectively. So, during the 50's, there was obviously a push to the umpires to vote more genouresly to Fullbacks and try and get rid of the reputation that its had for a long time, that only Midfielders win it.

David Dench won four Club Best and Fairests (still a record I think), yet polled very ordinary in the Brownlow...

But it is a bit hard to look all the way down there if you are an umpire...

IMHO... ALFPA MVP will become the most important medal to win in a few more years, as they get it right more often then the umpires do...

Woey may not have been the best but he is certainly one of the fairest. He never backchats the umpires despite some shocking decisions and he is also plays fair against his opponents. ALso, he did play a great year. He won Melbourne many games this year and he was fourth or fifth favourite to win the Medal anyway so it is not a huge upset.

As I stated at the start, This is nothing against Shane, and I respect Shane as Browlow medalist.

But would he have won it playing off a Half forward flank or Back Pocket, Why don't they change it's name to Best Blonde Mid-fielder. At least that would be truthful.

Don't agree the Browlow has the mystique, there have been heaps of awards over the years and who remembers who won any of them.

The Brownlow / Norm Smith will always be the coveted awards

Other than Robert Harvey I can't think of any other MVP

two fullbacks won brownlows in the 50's
so in other words in that era either full backs were the most important, best players in the competition and highly regarded.
john coleman played in the fifties and averaged greater than five goals a game.
so the greatest full forward of all time played against the greatest full backs of all time, making his record even better.
and to think of the ignorant people who doubt his brilliance

I think ill be the first person to actually answer your question Drakey heh. Lets see in a straight swap Woey for Cousins NO!
Id take Woey for Kemp but only cos of age reasons If Kemp was 24 NO! Id be willing to give up Braun and Rowan Jones and some draft picks for him kind of fair Braun is a top midfielder and Jones i think will develop into one of the best taggers in the comp.

I dont know the only real fair swap we could make with Melbourne would be Cuz for Woey but i wouldnt do it cos Cousins is a much better player.

Thanks jod.

I wouldn't give Roo, Mcleod, Hart, Biglands or Goodwin for him.

They are the only Crows players I can think of that I wouldn't at least consider a swap.
The rest would be negotiable.

I'll give the Dees Rehn for him. Hehehehehe
