Is Shaun Burgoyne the best clutch player of all time?

Was chatting to some mates, all neutrals except MightyHawks and they all said Burgoyne.

Got me thinking and I can’t actually think of a player who consistently performs when it matters more than him.

I’m sure someone will come up with some other names, these are my favourite type of players.

I'd say Burgoyne or Hodge. Hodge always seemed to effect a defining touch late in close prelims on top of his 2 Norms.

For best big game player ever, I would argue Dermott Brereton - I know I am biased. And i know its also because he played so many, which is a huge advantage. His debut was a final in 1982 - kicks 5. Breaks the record for most goals in a GF when he kicks 8 in 1985. He Kicks 3 with broken ribs and split kidney in the 1989 GF. He kicks 5 in the 1991 GF. And so on.

Last quarter of the 2013 PF was one of the most inspiring things i've ever seen on a football field. Burgoyne single handedly dragged us into a grand final, which unfolded into a threepeat. Geelong had the game in their pockets and it was Burgoyne that said "no, this is not happening today". I get emotional even reflecting on it. The guy is a frikin legend.

Shaun Burgoyne is my favourite Hawthorn player (an oxymoron for a Geelong supporter?). I hate the way he has killed us in the past (see post #12 above) but he is a wonderful footballer to watch. He is a 'break glass in case of emergency' type player. Best of all time? Dunno, but definitely in the conversation.
    Glad he's playing on.

    Luke Shuey. Cold as ice.

Also, Mundy goes alright, although he did miss after the siren once.

Don’t feel like I have numbers to back it up, but I’ve always felt that Paul Chapman was the difference for the Cats in many close ones.

Hodge is unquestioned, but Burgoyne with no exaggeration will never let you down in every facet of his game, on the backline he'll get that critical tackle or save a goal, in the midfield he'll do some heroic thing that doesn't show up on your typical stat sheet, in the forward line he'll kick a game winner. Will probably never have another player like him.
Overshadows guys like Cyril and Stratton who seem to kick up another level or get a second wind when the game is tight late.

Chapman was way more scary in a tight situation than Bartel or Johnson who seemed to have more of that reputation? Not that they were slouches there. Chapman would all of a sudden become unstoppable, laser every forward kick and become impossible to tackle. Screw that guy, activates his bs cheat mode.

Brent Harvey consistently had some crazy game winning runs too.
