The Eagles Collingwood game was the perfect example of it being the coaches fault. Free flowing, high scoring first half. Second half the clamps were put on and even though it was still an enjoyable game, highlights the fault of the game is largely with the coaches who have no reason to allow high scores.

You will find a lot of it has to do with players tiring over the course of the game. Teams always push numbers back but the longer the game goes players can't transition as quick. Less one on ones occur and more out numbers as defenders start to sit back a bit more.
There are a lot of people who think less interchanges will bring more attacking football but IMO it is the other way with higher interchanges that will help bring more attacking play. Coaches are always going to be a defend first mentality and that applies to most sports.
You can still enjoy a day out at the footy, but it's getting harder not to mention pretty expensive.

The St.Kilda coach said that the umpires were actually sent over to St.Kilda training to 'match sim' with the St.Kilda players, apparently the rules have become so vague and wishy-washy that players and the umpires need to get together through the week just to arrive at some kind of conclusion that vaguely pretends to be a sporting competition. Then of course, after all that great clarification from the umpires down at St.Kilda the Saints lost the free-kick count 26-14 and Richardson blamed the one-sided umpiring for the loss!
Well, that pretty much sums it up. The coaches, players and umpires just guess from week to week. I think when you see things like a player throw the ball 10 meters away from the officiating umpire and it's ignored, we all just shake our heads.
