Society/Culture Is the Karen meme sexist?

Karen memes were all about middle aged white women when they started so you could add the racist ism to the mix if you were inclined to view things that way.

Karen memes and tiktoks areeoften hilarious. The instant video capture age we are in highlights behaviors that have gone undocumented for years
Inclined to see things what ways?

its clearly racist as its defining a trait by race.

now we can argue if racism in this context is a bad thing or not. Lot of good arguments that its not. but we cant argue that its not discriminating based on race.

The rules on these things are quite clear, those exclusively against white people can't be sexist or racist, so I don't see how it can be if it's a slur directed at white women?
Exactly this.

Off topic. But why is it suddenly ok to close our borders to keep our community safe, but this was racism a few months ago?

Who is really controlling the message?

It's offensive because it's old and tired and has run its course.

nope...it’s part of world lexicon now and here to stay
Its worse then the n word which didnt actually suggest there was negative behaviour connotations to the colour of your kin. The word Karen sugests there is NEgative bheaviour connotations to skin and gender. Its disgusting. the only reason you dont think so is because of safety in crowds. Reported.

It's definitely a gendered label, but it's really about the people who display their entitlement in public outbursts.

It sucks if people who have genuine reasons for objecting to certain treatment, or a particular state of affairs, cop the label.
No you have it completely wrong. Its fine for someone to come up with a word for a certain type of negative behaviour. Its not fine to attribute that behaviour to a gender or race. That is what hate speech is. This is worse then just racism. Its hate speech. Its like people in the past attributing greed to jews. You are attributing a negative behaviour to race and sex.

sure you may think its funny. People thought saying jews are greedy was funny too at first. But then it slowly became a belief and led to dehumamisation of a race. we all know where it led. This is no different. Its just the start.

offending people should be fine. Ironically you have a no offending policy for this board. I'm offended. So are many women. But thats not what is wrong with this. Its dehuminsation. dehumanisation of a group of people is not ok. In any shape or form.

They were Rambo's allies in the 2nd last Rambo movie set in MYANMAR you Boomer.

Hmm. About that. This from 2007;

...The ruling military junta changed its name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989, a year after thousands were killed in the suppression of a popular uprising. Rangoon also became Yangon.

The Adaptation of Expression Law also introduced English language names for other towns, some of which were not ethnically Burmese.

The change was recognised by the United Nations, and by countries such as France and Japan, but not by the United States and the UK.

A statement by the (U.K's) Foreign Office says: "Burma's democracy movement prefers the form 'Burma' because they do not accept the legitimacy of the unelected military regime to change the official name of the country. Internationally, both names are recognised..."

It seems sexist to me, in the same way that 'mansplaining' is. These labels are affixed to people of a particular gender, although there are exceptions, so that becomes one of the main ways of judging someone's behaviour. You're less likely to be called a Karen as a man, less likely to have your complaint dismissed on that basis.

Julia Baird has written an article about the sexist Karen meme, and others have also criticised the label, but it still seems to be accepted. Mostly because women who complain are just called Karens.

Defenders of this meme would say that it only applies to certain types of women, however imo it leaves the door open to prejudice against anyone of a particular sex who has a complaint, whether it's justified or not.

It is obviously gendered. That doesn't mean it is not apt.

Isn't everyone forgetting about our own 'Strayan Meme Queen, Shazza? She's older than Kazza, and by a good bit too

shazza

the australian word for trailer trash/white trash unclassy women. On rare occassions used as a condensed nickname for someone named Sharon, but most of the time, its a descriptive term, to warn others of trashy women in the vicinity.

guy: this chick, she would've been a good catch except for one thing...

friend: she was a bit of a Shazza?

guy: yeh.

*The masculine version of this name is Bazza- obviously a nick name for Barry, but more commonly used for describing Shazza's inbred partner.

The last bit - Dazza is interchangeable with Bazza. And of course the great grandmother of first-names-as-collective-nouns is as 'Strayan as they come (even though the name itself is Irish) - Sheila!!
