These guys weren't even tipped to make the 8 pre-season. Mitchell and Priddis gone meant a lot of experience, as well as Brownlow medals went out the window. The most important and influential player for WCE, and one of if not the best ruckmen in the comp goes down injured in Nit Nat. Gaff, an ALL-Australian and a bloke that was tipped to be runner up in the Brownlow misses a lot of football due to his punch on the young Freo lad. And Sheppard, a player who emerged the last few years as one of the key defenders in the game goes down in the first qualifier against Collingwood. 5 goals down in the first quarter, the ghosts of 2015 re-visited, a host of missed chances late on yet they still find a way to win despite all of this. Balls of steel and a mind like no other. I think this win is as good as the Doggies in 2016 and as good as any other premiership in the history of VFL/AFL.

West Coast Eagles - Could not be beaten. Mentality of a warrior.

Was this the best win or the most hardest for any side to obtain in the history of footy?

Edited - Since the West Coast Eagles great triumph over Collingwood 6 months ago, they again loom as one of, if not, THE Favourites of them all. Amazing depth, great structure, impeccable game plan and a masterclass Coach. The Eagles have what it takes to once again be on the big stage in the final day of the 2019 AFL Calendar.

It's not a question if they can go back to back. Because we all know they're capable. The main question that needs answering is,

Will the Eagles go Back to Back in Season 2019?

I'm in awe of the OP and his intimate knowledge of 120+ years of premiers. It is a little curious that 2018 is the best and 2016 the second best in history, but only a harsh cynic would suggest he is a johnny come lately with * all idea about football.

I didn't think the Eagles winning was unlikely - they were top 2 for the entire year

Only from a standpoint after the first 15 minutes could it be viewed unlikely, but they were playing Collingwood of all teams in the Grand final.

It's probably my favourite due to the Trump-esque nature of winning the whole thing even when so many tipped us to:

1. miss the finals
2. make the finals but fail in September
3. lose to collingwood at home
4. lose to melbourne at home
5. lose the grand final because tHe EaGlEs CaNt PlAy At ThE mCg

No premiership team has won a grand final with the equivalent of the injuries we had.
