Is there a club that handles adversity worse than the West Coast Eagles?

They really need everything to be just so for them.

Their fragility was really highlighted for me last year when Simpson was whinging within days of the Eagles entering the Qld hub with the Eagles threatening to go home and stay home. Fast forward to a week ago and Simpson's ham fisted attempt at complaining about the drop in footy department spending and the possibility that it could lead to not drafting kids from broken homes or public schools.

It's not 2014/15. There is no adversity about playing Essendon at home (after they played Dreamtime at the G in Perth), or playing Sydney at Kardinia Park, or playing the bottom team in the comp at home.

Our best footy this year has been patchy at best. Our worst has been deplorable. We are only in the 8 because Carlton and St Kilda can't get their s**t together and Richmond have half a team.

Also, the 'whinging' about the hub is incredibly overrated and 'threatening to go home' are your words, not the club's. There was only one club in tears who were threatening not to hub in a famous Zoom call and it wasn't WCE players...

Well I can't mount a strong argument against this thread.

The one thing I will say is that the "can't travel" analysis is lazy, there are much deeper issues than that and they have been festering since 2019.

There is no question that WC are hot and cold, but it is kind of funny to watch the pile on. Funny how WC got dumped on for getting antsy while most Victorian players were sleeping in their own beds last year (which apparently gives you magic powers). Shoes on the other foot, and the AFL rolls out 5 star resorts, families staying and still there were tears, there were further demands, there were claims that teams like Port had it easy despite being FIFO into Qld and had a couple of extra (and only a couple) games in their home state. Meanwhile, who are the players sooking so they don't get drafted to certain clubs, who are the ones 'going home' after 2 years. Sooky Vic metro kids. WC are 1 of 2 clubs to win a flag in the past 4 years and 1 of 5 in the last decade, they are equal top on the AFL premierships list, they will probably play finals this year, and still have a decent side. They're one of the richest clubs in the comp. Not sure why people are getting stuck into a club that is most likely better than theirs.

This is a s**t season by the standards we should aim for.

The club should give him the chance to turn it around though. The last two years we've been a tight game v tigers from top 4 and a bullshit result v the dogs in 2020. With an aging list, if they try and squeeze another shot they have to back in the majority of the coaching staff to use the summer to change things.

To get a new coach would be to put a line through Redden, Shuey, JK, NicNat ect. Although a few of the players on that age group should be considering retirement anyway.

This year and last they remind me of Geelong a bit before Bomber Thompson, lots of talent, can look a million dollars against any team but fall apart at inexplicable times and look like a bottom 4 side.

I'm not inclined to defend our results this season because I agree they have been appalling. There have been several results that in any other year would be the season low-point. I can't explain it. I've said several times that something is NQR between the ears but beyond that I have no real answers. It's not like we're carrying the older guys either - Hurn, JK, NicNat - they've been better than OK. It's like a system failure, or the game plan breaks down. But yes, effort must be considered part of that. Damo with Damo was right for once: there should be a review because this year has been well short of acceptable. A brown sandwich of Ben Dixon proportions.

As for handling adversity, though, the club did pretty well in 2018 without Naitanui, Gaff and Sheppard at the pointy end. That doesn't redeem the results this year but it's worth noting if we're making sweeping statements about what the club can and can't do.

As apposed to Chris Scott who can't stop telling anyone who will listen how difficult Geelong circumstances have been this year and how well the have dealt with it. Just make sure you note that not everyone has had to deal with the tough circumstances Geelong have dealt with.

But in all seriousness, we did beat Collingwood in a GF at the MCG after going down by 5 goals. Without the players mentioned. That was resilient. But yes, it's deserted us since.
