Discussing with a client today who has been diagnosed with cancer who bought up a good point. When you have an operation and they put you under on the operating table, do you ever remember anything during that time (no dreaming, no consciousness or subconsciousness)? You go into the operating theatre and the next thing your in the recovery room with no recollections in between. Perhaps the same things happens - it becomes one big blank of nothing and you don't even know you are gone.

Thats bound to scare the religious ones of this world......

Why? they're not going to agree with you. The promise of life after death is probably the main reason that people have faith.

The idea that everything just stops, that no more experiences can be accumulated is very hard to grasp. It's almost irresistible to believe that somehow, in some shape of form we keep on being. It's this that leads to belief in the after life and it is also one of the most fundamental foundations of how religions arise.

Load of bollocks though

Yes Kirky there is indeed an afterlife and if you would like to receive this gift from God then accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour today.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Believe and trust in Jesus and ask Him to forgive your sins for He died for all the sins of the world and it is only through Him that you can be saved.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6).

I would be perfectly happy if you said YOU BELIEVE there is an afterlife but it's a little strong to say THERE IS such a thing.

What happened to the people who died before Jesus was "sent" to save us? If some of them have eternal life, what procedure was used to make that judgement?

I think this is part of the bigger question:
Is there more to life than just the physical world that we see?

I think most people believe that there is; whether most people are able to define that for themself is another question. But I think from polling etc about 70% of Australians believe in "God". I think that is significant. I think for a lot of people that belief is related to hope; that is I hope there is an afterlife, I hope there is a heaven / hell. There is significant comfort in that. You can never prove it either way and, that is where faith comes into the equation.

Also I think people do encounter things in their lives that they can't explain and that as well adds to a belief people have in the afterlife. That is there are forces out there that people experience that can't be explained through natural means, hence the supernatural. That too is a huge issue for a lot of people. I think back to the final episode of John Safran vs God and the exorcism segment. I don't know what was discussed (if anything) on this board about that, but it certain has had a lot of people talking about what exactly happened there. Hypnosis? LSD? A Prank? or a glimpse into the afterlife?

These people were saved because of their faith in the promise made by God that Christ would come to fulfill the prophecy of the Messiah. They died with faith and trust in God so I think we can be pretty sure they are in heaven right now.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13)

How much of it was written by WOMEN?????????????????

If the answer to that is "NONE", it would be interesting to hear what some of our Christian friends have to say about that. It would be super if we could hear from some female priests.

So there are two means of being saved, or were. Is that earlier method still available?

No and no.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23).

God cannot look upon sin and He has decided the wages of sin is death, yet He has given us a way out in that our sin can be born by a substitute for those who repent. This was done through the sacrifice of an innocent animal in the Old Testament.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. (Leviticus 17:11).

This was replaced through the coming of Jesus Christ who paid the price for our sins. Jesus was God in the flesh and only He was worthy to make this sacrifice for all humanity. Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29).

God the Son, clothed in human form, shed His blood for man's sin, thus satisfying every demand of holy justice. And through that precious blood, God showed Himself to be both "just and justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. (Romans 3:26).

So what you are saying, quite emphatically. is that the only way to be saved now is through a belief in Jesus. Jesus clearly stated that unless you are "born again" you CANNOT enter the Kingdom of God. The most quoted verse in the Bible, without equivocation, states that a belief in Jesus guarantees eternal life. Have I got your beliefs accurately BIRDY?

No it is a book of the New Testament addressed "To the Hebrews". Possibly to Hebrew Christians in Italy. The author is unknown, although it could have been written by the apostle Paul.

Thats basically it but it is God who judges not us. The next question is always: does this mean we can go out and sin all we want. The answer of course is no.

The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. (1 John 2:4-6).
