3 out of the last 4 years, the minor premier has failed to reach the big one. Is it now better to finish 2nd or lower to relieve the pressure?

It just shows the eveness of the comp. There rarely is an absolutely dominating team, even when Brisbane won the three premierships, they weren't the only team in with a shot each year, and had narrow wins each year.

I don't think since essendon went through that year nearly undefeated has a side who has been top, a clear an absolute favourite

It probably does relieve the pressure slightly, but clubs are hardly going to throw matches later in the year so they can finish 2nd or 3rd. That's plain stupid.

Bump.

Only 6 teams this century have finished minor premiers and win the premiership in the same year

Essendon 2000
Port Adelaide 2004
West Coast 2006
Geelong 2007
Collingwood 2010
Hawthorn 2013

Finishing 2nd to 8th eases the pressure on top spot

I don't think it's that much of an issue to be honest. To win it you've got to knock off three top four sides in a month. That's hard enough to do for any side.

The fact first doesn't do it particularly often doesn't concern me - who finishes first in a given year is often at least in part down to luck with injuries, quirks of the draw etc. It's rarely daylight between first and the next few these days.

I read something in a Sun from 2005 last week where some writer suggested that 1st should play 8th in week 1 to give them more of an advantage in week 1.
The minor premier normally makes the GF though. Port in 02 and 03, Adelaide in 05 and Freo in 15 are the only minor premiers that didn't play in the GF since 2000.

That shows the finals system is fine and shouldn't be touched.
