I watch some of the old vintage matches that get posted on youtube daily and last night was the 2008 MCG game against Collingwood. I remember that one vividly. Absolutely packed house on a Saturday night, North supporters everywhere, it felt like the most we have had at a regular season game I can ever remember in my time following us, and we made such noise it's hard to believe it was us. If it was your first North game you'd be thinking we were a big club.

The effort showed, the manic chasing and tackling compared to now, the 4 goal comeback in the last quarter, Lindsay and Campbell tearing up the oppo, the fans almost matching the magpie army in numbers. Man I miss it and it makes you wonder if we will ever see or feel something like that ever again. We took even our middling years for granted.

Lidge’s last game 😢 and The Other Dean and co have plenty of stories from the night. Given what happened in the ensuing days it will always be a night to remember.

Don't watch any 90's NMFC games - you'll end up in a straight jacket chewing Prozac tablets like Tic Tacs.

I started supporting and attending in the late 90s as a kid :). I don't remember a regular season game like that where we had that much blue and white in the crowd comparative to a big 4 side. Maybe it was due to where the supporters were seated and the acoustics lol.

I took a good mate of mine, his dad and uncle to that game. They're from Tassie and it was the first time his uncle (Wayne) had been to Melbourne. We watched the game from the Grey Smith Bar in the MCC and then hit up the Royal for a 'cultural performance' afterwards. Uncle Wayne was handed a tube of skin cream by one of the performers and requested to join the show. After which, uncle Wayne, muttered the immortal words, "This has been the best f***en noight of moy loife!" Indeed.

According to my mate, uncle Wayne has not been back to Melbourne since, but still regularly asks after me.

I was watching that Collingwood game on TV as I hadn't quite yet become a member.

LT was all over the place getting plenty of looks but couldn't put the nail in the coffin however he did kick a few late. Flash and Lower were huge in that last quarter.

The best games were the ones against the Bulldogs. Despite their top 4 finishes they struggled to beat us lol. Laidley did well with the resources presented to beat teams that were in better form.

1st quarter shit
2nd good
3rd good
4th one of the worst quarters by any team this year.

It didn’t instill me with any confidence at all.
Best game to date for us was against freo.

Yeah that’s fair enough.

I was swayed by the 2 quarters against Carlton. I ignored the last quarter because I want so much to believe in this team of squibs.

At my peril, of course. All the signs were there. I shoulda known. ****** pea hearts, probably thought they’d done enough.

Virtually every single time these 2 clubs went up against each other from 1998-2012 the underdog team won. The late 1998 match was one of the first I saw becoming new to the sport. They would have troubled us in 1999 had we run into them in the finals, moreso than anyone bar Essendon. I went to the match where they broke our winning streak and while I sensed it was coming because we were just 'due' for a downer, we got blown off the park. The 2002 comeback game was satisfying after Nathan Brown smugly flipped the cheer squad off, Pickett kicked 6. We did it again in 2003 in a shootout and then they turned the tables on us in 2004.

We really had it over them from 2006-2008 though and pretty much destroyed their credibility as a contender.

Also this thread is going to cop a hiding when we lose our 100 year celebration match by 100

We've all already accepted a nuclear thrashing. It really gets a workout when we go into games thinking we're a chance and get smashed - Good Friday, Hawks, Swans, etc

all the top picks in the world will not help us. We need to upgrade our C grade plodders with consistent b graders . Easier said than done as no good players would want to join us at the moment ..
If we are serious as a club , we need to trade some players who may have some value but don’t process the competitiveness to take us forward.
