Opinion Is this rock bottom?

As a mid, compared to the opposition yesterday Harry is a problem. Melbourne mids were raising our forward line repeatedly and then following up by launching attacks. Harry and LDU are talented players but they didn't cover the ground or provide anything like the defensive nor attacking work that their free running opponents did.

And the opposition must enjoy seeing Simpkin with the ball in hand. They know that none of our forwards have a clue what he's going to do or where he's going to kick it - and in any case it's likely to hit a defender on the chest.

I reckon that monkhorst could pull on a jumper and he's be a better option than CCJ. It wasn't a good day out for X either, but at least we know what he can do on a good day.
One of our biggest issues - without Wardlaw - is that we require LDU to be our primary attacking mid, whilst he is also the only midfielder big enough, fit enough and fast enough to actually provide proper defensive pressure in the middle (if he tried). It's not fair or reasonable to expect this of him.

It's not. I'm Mr Pessimism a lot of the time and praccies just do not hold anywhere near that kind of significance. Brisbane won a preseason comp 12-13 years ago and then were shit in the real thing.

What people are getting at is that they don't see evidence of changes we've been calling for, and then they're extrapolating that scenario across the year. The result: a rather miserable year. For the seventh year running.

Agree with others that true rock bottom would be a failure to uplift in this period of expected marginal improvement followed by the departure of disillusioned young gun/s.

If that happens there's no way out. Curtains

Carlton famously won the preseason competition and the wooden spoon in the same year.

A couple of media folk have been saying for a few years now how bad the situation is at the club. Sadly, each year they are proven more and more correct.
Personally I don't buy into that. I'm sure it's not always positive and pleasant at Arden Street given we've been bottom 4 for the last 5 years or so but we know the media folk in question have long standing agendas against us they will take advantage of any disgruntlement, however slight, to push their narrative.

I also don't think he's lost the players either, you hear the way they speak about him I think he still has the aura of a 4 time premiership coach. I think the game has simply gone past him, happens to the best of them, the sooner he and the board admit this we can start planning for our next coach.

Wait until we're 0 and 4, smashed by Carlton on Good Friday and face Brisbane next in Gather Round.
What concerns me the most and I said it in the game thread yesterday , there wasn’t one positive to come out of that game not one. To put up that display , and I dgaf that it’s a practice match is disgraceful

I know I copped it for saying it a year or two ago but I'm gonna say it again - our midfield sucks. They look good on paper. Until you remember that midfields need to run two ways and need to be smart enough to set up well.

As Adam Kingsley so brilliantly put it:

"****in run!!!!"
Spot on. It’s slow, terrible at kicking and doesn’t run other way

It's a very low bar but I'm taking Duursma's performance as a positive. Not saying he was great by any stretch but he presented well, was involved, tackled and should have finished with 3 goals. Still a lot of improvement to be had but if he builds from yesterday I think he'll have a good season.

I’ll give you he started ok but hardly sighted after that.
When players are in the afl system they should improve other than Curtis I see no improvement in anyone and that’s a blight on all our coaches.

If it isn’t rock bottom I would like to know what is ?
Jesus Christ, where's your imagination? Not just you, but other people saying "we have to be 4-2 after six rounds", etc. Consider this not-unlikely scenario:

We are 0-6 after six rounds. There's an uprising, which sees Clarko & Co given the sars, with the entire footy dept replaced by past and present BFers.

DuckYeah coaches the women's team.
Snake is put in charge of the Huddle.
TennisPlayerAndy is in charge of motivational half time addresses, resulting in half the team moving to inner Mongolia to live in yurts where they will never hear about football again.
Chip Scab1 is in charge of team selection. Senior team consists of BGZ and a bunch of talented U16s.
Game day tactics by a committee of posters with a 1990s glory days theme.

Surely there's a spot for goalieboy82 in innovation and change management too.

My advice to you all is to just check out. No memberships, no attending games, just do what I do and watch the LolNorf horror show in the comfort of your own home. Until the current senior coaching staff, football management, CEO, GM, board members, et al. are shown the door, then vote with your feet. It is hard to fathom how a group of supposedly experienced individuals could be so dysfunctionally inept. They have Norfed the club to the point of perennial sh1tness.

I would pay to see these events transpire, in fairness

Gee I don’t know but this much malaise and handwringing in February is surely a new low for us.
It'll dissipate a bit with a slightly better performance on Sunday. Whether that performance will be because they function better or because Collingwood don't try, I don't know

Given what Simmo presided over at West Coast I don’t think he’s the answer, I’d prefer Horse of the older boys.

The recruitment of the experienced players lies squarely with Clarko/Viney for mine.

While I understand their reasoning, and agreed with it at the time, I don’t think you can import a diverse range of experience and expect it to automatically have any real cohesion, especially when there was no real senior leadership left at the club to bring it all together.

It was worth the punt but so far doesn’t seem to have worked. Hopefully it turns around.

I think Brady has a bit to answer for in not being able to get decent deals done. I feel for him a bit as we haven’t had access to the likes of Daicos, Darcy, the Ashcrofts, all the academy players etc during our down time however he hasn’t produced any game changing deals so it feels like he’s sitting on his hands in the most crucial moments.

I don’t discount the role the AFL has had to play in this. The poor compensation, the horrible fixtures, ridiculous suspensions. This is the first year during this horror patch where the fixture looks kind to us. Time to take advantage.
