Opinion Is this rock bottom?

I really like the optimism - and clearly there are some young players with better junior CV's than the previous side simply by virtue of their draft positions - but 6 of them haven't played a game and you could argue more than half the side hasn't shown enough for anyone to be certain of anything.

This is the nature of projections hooked in with emotional bias and lots of hope. It's a group of relatively high draft picks and some players that have shown glimpses and some players that are definitely good enough. That's all it is.

This is true, but it's still a significant amount more than what we had four years ago.

None of those players I listed in 2020, outside of perhaps Simpkin, had proven themselves, and now the ones who remain are for the most part reliable pieces that we can now build around. That in itself is reason to be a lot more optimistic.

A lot still has to go right in order for us to contend again, but we're now in a spot where things could conceivably go right. I'd argue that back in 2020, projecting a 2024 premiership was impossible, but now, with roughly another 30 players set to come and go, I don't think a 2028 premiership should be considered off limits.

It might only be half of my listed squad that plays on the day, but I think it's fair to be optimistic about our future.

Yep, and the original post said precisely that - comparable talent and potential to the great eras albeit nobody at Carey/Blight levels.

Obviously no achievements, but in the context of this rock bottom thread my point was we should expect a quick rise.

12 players on the list picked in the top 10. We’ve not had that breadth of top end talent in the draft era, even if only half reach their potential we should see vastly improved results.

Anyway, let’s dwell on the failure of the punt we took in trading pick 69 on a bloke who’d had a double ACL before he’d played 10 games. No point being bullish about Harry, George, Colby, Zane, or even LDU, TT, Souv, etc etc

Yeh ok; it’s your passive agressive tone that is probably the issue in this season of joy.

IMO the only players since 2010 to win a flag that are in that range are GAj, Martin and Franklin.

Alot of other sides have played in and won GFs in that time.

Scrolling though the photos from this mornings training in the preseason thread, its a clear as daylight what we are about to witness in Wardlaw. He, Sheez and Kerch to name a few have no interest whatsoever in rock bottom.

For me it’s rock bottom, cos it’s reached a point now where you can’t even enjoy our beautiful play for a quarter and a half cos you know it’s all going to be undone in 10 mins.

No other Melbourne based team gets run down by this mob when 32 up down here let alone in such quick time.

Oh stop it those days are well behind us.

Rock bottom contained such luminaries as Bonars, Turners, Youngs, etc.

You all realise it takes 5/6 years in the system to have the all round physical attributes to be your best.
1000%

we are a young team. If you think this is a crap feeling wait until we hit that phase when we start losing in the last 2 mins or with the last kick of the game.

I was there today and I saw a young Roos team that made Freo look like training cones for a half.

Trust the process.

not yet its rock bottom, sadly....

currently in a horrible mood, honestly we at best will be 1/11 at the bye........think about that......

1 and 11...that will be close to rock bottom........

The long process of watching us lose to the same opponent we defeated this time last year, with our SuperCoach being completely out-coached…?
It’s been six years of sh*t.
I trust nothing until I start to see something to believe in.

I do think we now have enough talent and green shoots to be confident the worst is well behind us. But my fear is that another year of mainly Ls could lead to some important players looking for the exit door, thus pushing us back down to where we were a year ago, just because they don’t want to risk this being their whole career. We desperately need a couple of 4 quarter efforts leading to Ws to install belief.

We are currently 15th on the ladder and depending on other games to come this round, we could stay there. Surely that isn't rock bottom :tongueout:

Very well-articulated.
Continuing the struggler/loser culture we have risks achieving whatever we’re hoping for in the future. Because people want to be part of a winning organisation, they might start to look elsewhere.

We can’t keep being like this & pretending improvement will be inevitable. We need to actually expect more.

Which important players?

Larkey is locked in, as is Logue, the rest of the important players are either in their 1st or 2nd year

Except for LDU the rest can leave

4 wins in last 44. We can't sink much lower, surely...

. Carlton
. Brisbane
. Geelong

0 - 5 a distinct possibility.

. Hawthorn
. Adelaide
. St.Kilda
. Suns

1 - 8 a distinct possibility

. *
. Port
. Eagles

2 - 10 a distinct possibility

I'll stop there. Best scenario l can see is a 4 - 19, if we are lucky.

Getting excited over a quarter and a half of good footy???? I’ve heard it all now.

Our list is a mess. Years of pain ahead.

But hey, let’s keep lowering the bar so we can “get excited” over mediocrity.
Yeah I'm starting to really see the loser mentality creeping into every facet of the club including the support base.
