Not even Melbourne, Carlton, GC or GWS did that during their down periods. We'd be on a whole new level of s**t as a club all on our own.

*People seem to have genuinely forgotten how bad Melbourne of that era were, cheap wins over GWS and GoldCoast in their formative years and finishing 17th over Stkilda by percentage is the only reason they didnt get 3 spoons straight, also throw in the fact they won the '08 and '09 spoons in that six year stretch for good measure.

*of course this would be unique to us, as is almost always the case we are forced to do shit other clubs dont have to even think about, and seeing as one of our vital no.1 draft picks was hoodwinked out of us, going for Harley Reid is the Hobson's choice we may regret not making a few years down the track.

Is this rock bottom? Great question. Who knows? We've all asked ourselves that question a few times over the last couple of years. I know I have. I see a decade of pain ahead to be brutally honest. The introduction of a Tazzie team will hurt us enormously, particularly if we don't land SERIOUS talent in the next 2 years.

I've followed NMFC closely since the early '80's and this is comfortably the worst list I can recall.

The list has a severe shortage of talent, first and foremost. But then combine that with a lack of leadership, grunt and mongrel, we are no better than Fitzroy of '96 IMO. As a supporter, I now go to games expecting a 5-15 goal loss depending on who we are playing. It's bloody awful.

Anyone who thinks guys like Scott, Mahony, Turner, Xerri, Goater, Powell, Corr, Phillips, Bergman, Comben, Perez, Thomas, Spicer, Edwards, Dawson etc are the answer, is seriously kidding themselves. A couple of these kids may end up being decent B Grade footballers (Goater and Bergman?), Comben may end up being a player if his body allows it. Thomas who knows? But the rest are so limited in terms of actual football talent, it's frightening. Even our co-captains are B Grade footballers. It makes you really wonder whether Rawlings & co. actually have a clue, and yet these are the guys entrusted with getting us out of this hole. That's what concerns me most.
Years of drafting/trading in top blokes, quality people, mid-sized, mid-paced, poorly skilled footballers has finally taken its toll. I dare say Clarko must be wondering WTF he has got himself into.

Another year of watching us hoping we finish last sucks BIG time, but it seems that is our only hope of possibly landing the talent we need.

Is this rock bottom? I bloody hope so, but I wouldn't be betting against another similar thread being posted in 2029.

I think our only hope is Clarko and Viney stepping over the top of Rawlings and the recruiters at the draft and getting these picks/trades right.

This draft is so important. We may have 4 top 20 picks or close enough to
It.

A good draft on top of Wardlaw, Sheezel , George () , will see us start the rebuild finally.

Ad on top of this LDU and 5 others of top end quality currently on the list (Thomas, Zurhaar, Larkey, Comben as third tall/ruck, Logue) , we have over half a genuine contending team starting to form.

We need to target 2 free agents who are 25ish and best 22 in good teams over the next 2/3 years.

If we can, then guys like Simpkin, Stephenson, Goater, Bergman, Xerri, Powell, Phillips to become outer 22 - 25 role players and we will start to steer this ship in the right direction within the next 18 - 24 months.

The results will start to improve from next year if we put a broom through 12-14 blokes on the list. Quite a few of them get a regular game now.

I think that we hit rock bottom last year and are on the way up.
While the Senior team is still struggling, the VFL team was utter rubbish last year as well.
The current VFL team is showing signs of major improvements.
This is a bottom up build and we need the VFL team to improve to underpin the Senior team.
Dispite the poor results we have in the last few weeks showed some signs of improvement.
Ball movement has been better and with purpose.
We really need now to stop getting flogged at ground level.

Exactly, I am guessing its raw emotion that's stopping people in here from grasping the idea that we are in a rebuild of a rebuild. Clarko hasnt come in to continue to build on the wonderful structural and cultural groundwork by laid down by the previous regimes who were 'innovative but not quite the right coach at the time', the poor bastard has come in to start the **** again and try to find useable materials for a garbage heap made by people who didnt have a clue what they were doing. Maybe give it longer than 3 months before everyone starts to microwave their memberships, tell their kids "you can follow whatever team you want, i dont care anymore", sell their beloved signed Boomer Harvey jumper on ebay and follow the Storm full time cos "at least they have a go".

That was the best of the last 4 years, especially when the list was at its worst. We were about to inherit the best junior in years and even the off season recruiting seemed sound.

And then the club blew up.
