sage - defintion:

Having or exhibiting wisdom and calm judgment.
Proceeding from or marked by wisdom and calm judgment:

From what I saw on Saturday, I think he is. Im not speaking tongue in cheek here either.

As a team, we have some champions, but we are'nt overloaded with them. Cuz, Gardie, wirrapunda, and Judd. The rest are good honest footballers. But woosh has them thinking they can run thru brick walls. Im serious

Their confidence and positive outlook is more than just heart warming. And its all due to woosha's coaching.

Did anyone see how calm he was 15 mins into the last quarter. I was trashing my own house and he was calm as a cucumber, showing 100% confidence in his game plan and players.

Great things to come !!

Has definetly instilled confidence and belief into what was touted as one of the worst lists in the AFL 2 seasons ago.

Scary to think what he could have achieved at Freo

Probably not as much due to two reasons

(1) he has used the successful history/tradition of wc to inspire players - I dont think that method would work down at the port

(2) I think the wc boys are more receptive to woosha's methods - there are less ego's and high flyers at wc.

Did Woosha admit in the media he was not really serious about the Freo job, and that he did want the WC job more?

Back to the topic.

Woosha coaches like he played. If you watch the team, you can see Worsfold stamped all over them. He is the right man for the job and I don't think any other coach at the time who was interviewed for the job could have done any better.

John has established himself as a sound coach and with Micale helping him out tactically along with Wiley and Sumich, in years to come, John could be up there with the Pagans, Malthouses and Sheedys.

Just hope he only coaches us and never ever another AFL side.

Apparently, Woosha thought that Freo had the better list and that he would prefer working with that squad compared to ours - means nothing now i guess

RE: point 1

Fair call, bringing back past premiership players has no doubt helped the players and the club re-establish themselves. The culture at the club has definetly strengthened with that move

We can only hope.

If we get 10 years out of him like we did with Malthouse, I would be satisfied.

Just never ever want him to coach the Violets. That would crush me.

I think you are under-selling us. I think Kerr and Morrison [at his best] is bordering on that group while Fletcher is pressing for AA this year and Matera is the top goal scorer in the league. In the next few years i think we will see a few more enter that elite group including [most notably] Sampi and Gaspar. We also have a number of developing guys and any of them could step up.

I hope so! Itd break my heart to see him coach another side. Just as it did when Mick Malthouse left to coach the pies. I couldnt cope!

Firstly, no team has lots of those types of players. Secondly, I would only put Cuz in that group atm. He is the only one who has done something [4 x AA]. I dare say that by the end of the year Gardiner will also have AA. But those guys are so well respected because they performed so well over a long period time. Gardie, Wirrapunda and Judd have to perform over long periods of time before they are mentioned alongside the names of Carey and Hird.

uhuh and you also have to remember that Wirra, Gardie, Judd and Kerr are only at the beggining of their careers where as Hird and Carey are preety much at the end. I know who id have on my list, id have the young boys because i could get more out of them than the older guys.

There are only two types of AFL coaches - 1) those that stick around forever and succeed and 2) those who stick around for a few years and ultimately fail.

The difference betweeen one and two is winning a premiership. And I think Woosha can take us there.

Exhibit 1: Premiership winning coaches

Leigh Matthews
Mick Malthouse
Kevin Sheedy
Denis Pagan

Exhibit 2: Green coaches

Woosha
Chris Connolly
Paul Roos
Bomber Thompson
Dean Laidley
Peter Rodhe
Grant Thomas

Exhibit 2b: Make or break coaches (ie no premierships - clock is ticking)

Schwab
Daniher
Ayres
Williams
Frawley

I think its sometimes unfair how coaches can be sacked and labelled as pathetic when they have an ordinary list to choose from.

An example is Damien Drum and Freo, now, it doesnt take a brain surgeon to realise that Drum isnt a great coach, however, the Dockers list at that time was one of the worst in the league. His decision to recruit youngsters instead of handing out theyre early draft picks showed a lot of guts. Sadly, his sacking was an absolute debacle.

Whos to say that if Drum was still at Freo, they wouldnt be playing even better than under Connolly?

It would break me to see Woosha coach another side too. Apparently his first interview with the West Coast Eagles was good but didn't overly impress the board. In fact there were strong reports that Greg Hutchinson and Neil Craig were above Woosha after the first round of interviews.

Remember that. Also remember there was a lot of pressure on the board to select Woosha ahead of anyone else. Maybe Paul Roos wasn't the first "popularly elected" coach as has been suggested

I couldn't imagine anyone else coaching us in the next 5 years except for Woosha.

And if Woosha did leave, I would want Sumich to take the job. I think it is an advantage having a past player as a coach.

One thing I have noticed re Woosha's style of coaching is that when a player thinks he might get a free kick for something, they don't hang around waiting and trying to convince the umpire. They just get on with the game and go! If there is one paid, back they come to get it, but they don't sook anymore. Also if they are pushed out of a contest, back they come!

Yeah, exactly like how Worsfold played the game. You don't get any points on the board for having a sook, you have to play the ball and get straight back into it.

Shows how much guts that Woosh has put into these guys. They just don't quit.

A lot of people nowadays throw around the "champion" status far too easily. IMO we only have 3 champions. Ashley McIntosh, Glen Jakovich and Ben Cousins. The first 2 more of their history rather than what they can do today.

Gardiner, Wirrpunda, Judd and Kerr will all be champion players in years to come.

Cousins is pretty short, I suspect he actually runs on AAA's.

It was interesting to read this article about how the Eagles are looking to secure Woosha until the end of 2006, even though he's got a year left to run on his present contract. While that's a hell of a vote of confidence, you suspect that this is also driven by the fact that there are going to be a few clubs shopping for new coaches this year.

that's a very big call.

sheedy has made it through the bad times with the dons. he has survived a couple of times when certain board members wanted his head.

it's great to have Whoosh along but let's see how he goes in the bad times (and they will happen in the future to some degree) before he put him up there with sheedy.
