I think most footy fans who have half a brain realise all teams must go thru down times and experience the cyclic nature of afl success.

Anyone with half a brain could also forsee woosh steering the club out off a rough trot.

In fact there were strong reports that Greg Hutchinson and Neil Craig were above Woosha after the first round of interviews.
And at the time I thought they were once again getting another Ken Judge. First they hired KJ with a bad record at Hawthorn (a winning percentage of only 32%) and then they were selecting a coach mainly on psychological tests. That wasn't a good idea in my view. All coaches should be hired on character, personality strength and leadership qualities, based on years of observation. Everybody knew that Woosha had all that, yet Neil Craig and Greg Hutchinson were above Worsfold, just because in a couple of hours, they had sold themselves slightly better than our current coach. For a moment I though they were going to make another costly mistake. Fortunatelly Neil Craig and despite his excellent performance on all the tests, got cold feet, Hutchinson understood that the Eagles fans didn't want him and the Eagles board realized we the supporters wanted Woosha and nobody else!

I agree with everything you have said.

The Eagles made a horrible mistake by not only hiring Ken Judge, but not taking any other coaching applications for the vacant role.

Re: Neil Craig. There were reports that he had been given the senior coaching role, but when heard of the massive backlash from Eagle supporters he decided to pull himself out of the running.

Next time we need a coach, which I hope doesn't happen in less that 20 years we should ask someone who can see through things that personality tests and 2 hours interviews can never find out. For example Mick Malthouse was he first one to suggest Woosha to us. He knew the man very well. He knew Worsfold had the qualities to be a successful coach. To select a coach we need people with the knowledge of Malthouse or with the insight of people like Bobby Robson, the soccer coach of Newcastle (England). Six years ago Robson predicted that his personal interpreter and assistant coach (Jose Mourinho), would be one of the best european soccer coaches. Well yesterday this guy won the final of the UEFA CUP for his club (Porto FC), one of the most prestigious soccer competitions in the world. Robson knew that Mourinho was very keen to learn, had confidence in his ability, paid attention to detail, had strong personality and passion for the game and his work ethic was equal to the best. Exactly the qualities people with vision can see on Woosha.

Add Quinlan and Fitzroy to that list.

Champion players dont always make great coaches. Watson is a great example of that.
