Is it just me or is he becoming a sook? I remember him last tour, young, aggressive but taking wickets. Now he seems to be more focussed on mouthing off on and off the field. He would do much better if he just shut it and focussed on getting some wickets. He is not alone though, the body language and attitude of the Indian team on the whole is very ordinary. Flat track bullies?

What is a bowler meant to do when your batsmen post those sort of totals?

Bowled a couple of superb spells today. Very unlucky not to have more wickets, edges where going to ground or going for boundaries where on his day it could've been different. India overall were pathetic on day 1 but the 'fightback' this test has been led the by the bowlers. Yadav, khan and sharma all worked very hard today. Can't fault these blokes for having a red hot go. Blame their batsmen for lack of fight

This. The only real fight shown by India this whole series has been from their bowlers. Haven't been as potent as our bowlers, but bowled some good spells, and Sharma in particular has bowled without luck at stages. Agree with OP in that he's been less aggressive and a bit down on pace, but was under an injury cloud coming in if I remember correctly.

It's their gutless batting performances which have made the bowlers look worse.

when glen mcgrath was a young fast bowler first on the scene, he had a fair few petulant moments on the field. He sooked, he raged, etc. Off the field by all accounts he was shy, gentle and generous.

<Shrug> who is to know.

but yeah, enjoying the indians getting tonked.

I remember Mark Taylor saying at the start of the series that he is a better bowler than his average suggests. He has played 44 tests with an average of 36

Its a pretty shit average for a player who is meant to be one of their better bowlers. He does seem unlucky in some situations, but how can his average be so high when he plays against the Bangers and Zimmers a lot?

He should be having a great time of it on our pitches, but he's still struggling to take a big haul

Edit: My real question is, if he really is a "better bowler than his average suggests" 44 tests should be plenty to get it down...

Injury - who knows, he was certainly not at his best. Granted bowled well yesterday. Got to admit it craps me off when anyone gets over smart arsey on/off the field, worse when they are getting hammered (or they are Haddin of course). Just looks poor. Maybe it fires him up? To me it is a consistent message of poor looser-ism coming through over and over. OK when all the ducks are in a row and the world is a fun place, but spit it big time when they start to wobble.

I dont think he has come on as quickly as everyone thought he would.
He seemed like one who could go onto become a superb bowler, but in actual fact, he's just alright.

If India lost sharma to injury or what ever, i dont really think that would have much of an impact, as he's quite replaceable

Love seeing him get smacked around the park:thumbsu:

er, what?

he's played 3 tests against the bangas and zero against zimbabwe....

agreed though his average is not good enough for a bowler of his capability (especially from what he showed us 4 years ago)

I was watching yesterday on the Indian coverage when they had Wasim Akram commentating and it was quite enlightening. He basically said he is sick of everyone telling Ishant he is unlucky, every time something goes wrong someone comes up to him and gives him a pat on the back and tells him it will be alright. He's a fast bowler, things dont always go your way so they should stop coddling him. He also talked about him falling away in his action and his wrist position and said maybe if he worked on his game he might not be so unlucky.

Good comments from Akram there and he is probably right. In saying that, you can understand all thier bowlers getting fed up when thier batsmen do nothing. Even yesterday, their bowlers got them back into the game to some extent and four batsmen get out before stumps.

But no, I think many bowlers do get frustrated when things aren't going well. Some show it more than others but Sharma just needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and focus on bowling.

I guess cultural differences would prevent it occurring, but maybe Wasim could coach Sharma like he has Starc? Seems to be a noticeable improvement in Starc's bowling, though he still has a way to go.

On the other hand, you could argue act Pattinson acts quite petulantly. However his good form and that of Australia since his debut probably helps gloss over that.

Pattinson can be overly exuberant when appealing, but Sharma's probably one of the more reactive fast bowlers I've seen. He reacts to anything and everything. Maybe he does it to fire himself up but it doesn't appear to have any obvious benefits.

I'm pretty sure he said he had attempted to approach him in the past and been rebuffed, I could be wrong there though.

I'm not sure you can credit Wasim with coaching Starc, I thought they just had a chat :D

I think it was Geoff Lawson on the ABC who commented that Sharma was the quintessential "mood" bowler; very good when his tail was up, but also very prone to cracking the sulks and losing the plot. You could see when he was getting tonked around and he started trying to mouth off at Warner.

Zaheer at least backs up his mouth with effort.

Mate do you really need to make up bull sh&t to support your point?

He has never played against the Zimmers and only played 3 test against the Bangers, which is the least amount of test agaisnt any country (Except Pakistan; who India have been at war with on and off over Kashmir, so they dont play much)
