Trent Croad worth 1.5 mill over 3 years.

He is good but I don't reckon he is that good. That is Hird and Carey status he is after.

That infection must have swollen more than his leg.

Alot of dough isnt it? But player managers are taking advantage of the TV rights money etc. Probably too much money for a 50 game player but what do you do when the market will pay that amount to him, i dont think we could afford to lose him, what happens in 2 years time if Hay wants to go back to Perth? Its just too terrifying to think about.

Most of the TV money will go to players.

What we need is for the AFL central revenue to cover wages (salary cap) and club memberships to cover Coaching, club admin costs etc.

Then our comp will really flourish

unfortunately in this day and age the market tends to dictate the value of a player.....
what choice do the hawks have but to bow to his managers wishes.... how much money do players actually need.... club loyalty is just a thing of the past in most cases.... there still are some players who are loyal and love playing for their team colors... but i feel they are getting fewer and fewer. And this is pretty hard for the average supporter to deal with... thats what happens when footy becomes more of a business.....
Still saying this i would not want hawthorn to lose a player of croads undoubted ability and potential... In a couple of years he should easily be in the top 4-5 players in the league....he's already one of the most exciting to watch, especially when he flys for those marks, and obviously has great marketable qualities for the club.......
That 1.5 mil, that they were talking about is no doubt a media beatup and utter rubbish. The actual figure would be much less than that. Its also going to be structured in a way that will increase each year....so he wouldnt get $500,000 next year - more like $300,000.
I'm more worried about the damage these type of articles do within the club....surely this would cause disgruntlement within the ranks.....

I am aware that most a portion of tis figure would involve some sort of marketing/advertising package, however it is still 1.5 mill. What difference does it make if it tiered or parts of it involve him doing other work, he still gets the money.

It's funny, I worked with Croad for a period of time in the hospitality industry about 6 years ago and even then some of his mates around the place were saying "he is going to be a star". Obviously the poor kid has had such huge expectations on him for a while and perhaps he has handled it quite well, but how will he play when he has that much money being given to him and he is in poor form. Clubs have expectations, players have expectations and supporters have expectations, could the pressure get too much for such an inexperienced player??

Hey maybe in another 3 years he will be worth 1.5 mill, but don't put too much pressure on the young guy. What I am concerned about is that other players in the club may feel that they have been around longer, player better, or are a more experienced player that they deserve the same sort of package if not more. What would that do to our precious clubs, not just Hawthorn?? Drive them into the ground. Clubs would be forced to pay HUGE sums to keep players and those players who have such large egos would chase fortune at other clubs, eg Barry Young. Thus, leaving the club in the dark just because they wouldn't or couldn't meet the players demands. It is becoming a bloody joke. As dutchy_rules mentioned there is hardly any club loyalty anymore, and that is the problem. Money has started talking and it is going to be the downfall of the Victorian clubs unless players decide to play for pride rather than mega-bucks.

You make some excellent points glove, trouble is loyalty goes both ways and the way the rules are structured sides finishing high to mid ladder positions need to use players to barter to get better selections come National draft day, so i guess players so loyalty only goes so far. Look at Nick Holland for example, it wasnt that long ago Hawthorn were ready to offload him, i guess he could reasonably say loyalty should go both ways or its every man for himself. Most players you will find will accept slightly lesser terms to stay at clubs they are happy with. Look at Chris Grant for example. I dont think its nescessarily the players fault, managers have become very good at banding around figures via the media to alert everyone there player is out of contract and maximise the pressure on the existing club to come up with the goods. Its a nasty business but the football business is very competitive and money is huge.

You are right BUBBALOUIS, loyalty does play a vital part in any arrangement. Perhaps both parties are to blame, however, I still feel that it is going to be the players that drag the fortune of the clubs down with their outrageous monetary demands.

Hopefully some sort of medium can be met before any damage occurs to our clubs, more so the Victorian clubs as they are the ones who will be struggling.

Hey glove... i thought that was the idea behind the salary cap.... this way no club is going to be able to afford to have a team full of champions and evens up our great game. Unfortunately due to the salary cap certain players are bound to leave clubs if their monetary demands are not met...
Its gotta be a tough situation for the clubs... do they pay the extra and keep the players or do they let them go and keep others lower down...... well if they were carlton or essendon we know they would just break the salary cap and keep the players.......
i reckon its only going to get more difficult for the clubs to balance their lists to meet the salary cap.... lets just hope our players are more understanding of the clubs position and settle for a little less. I'm sure their managers will be pushing for them to get as much as they can though.......

It might be the idea behind the salary cap but is it working?? Almost every year the AFL increases the cap, I understand that this is alot to do with yearly appreciation and inflation but really it is just another excuse for players with egos larger than the game to extract more money out of out beloved clubs.

The bigbucks should be left to the proven superstars of the game, not young upstarts trying to make a mark.

Moving into footy in the 2OO0's

Try to think of the Admin and members as the club.

The players are just mercenaries we recruit to do a job.

The AFL is driving up wages so put the onus on them to find the money to pay them. Let membership money be used to improve the club and pay the administration.

This is the line thay Dicker is pushing with the AFL and he's quoting the NFL as the example.

Hawthorn nearly went to the wall wit under the counter payments to players so it can't happen again

I remember hearing that at the time (2016) - any further news of Croady's movements in 2018??
Dating Kate Jesaulenko, daughter of the great man. There were rumours she was having his baby but doesn’t seem to be if you look at her insta. They have been together a while now and are engaged.

Imagine the kid if they bred! Two imports who knew nothing and were 200+ players!
