I think you miss the point re McDonald. What sort of player do you think he is? Well, I know he is not a pack mark player. What is he doing in packs with McLean, a pack mark, and what is Bud doing in the same pack? I know because it was bombed to Bud, who happened to be with McLean and McDonald on many occasions when the ball was bombed, nearly all day. McDonald is a lead up or one on one player not a pack mark. McCartin is a pack mark player. So is McLean. Bud is not. Amartey can but prefers to lead or go one on one. But McDonald is definitely NO pack mark and should not even be in the packs.
Macca is a baby and you can't say at this stage of his career that he's not a pack mark

The Swans have put up on socials that which of Logan's contested marks was the best , or pack marks

Sure. It would be great if Gulden was 100% error free. Sure , note his errors but put them in context. His natural inclination is to create. His efforts have helped keep us vaguely competitive.
Absolutely, but when Gulden makes an error it's "at least he's trying to create something" whereas when nearly everyone else makes a mistake it's "FFS what are they doing."

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if we can give that benefit of the doubt to Gulden, others should receive it too. Generally speaking most mistakes players make in footy is from trying to create something. That's just my take though.

not Sure Rowbottom trying to break a tackle is at the same level.

OH KEEEEERIST!!!!,!,

Sorry for the interruption….I feel better now

I think we have shown a lack of ability to change roles to players available, I agree with what you're saying in the sense that we aren't covering the Reid role. But he isn't there so why do we still play like he is and try to make someone else be Reid?
If that makes sense , does in my head

Lloyd goes off let's recreate the lloyd role (Mid game harder mind you)

Seems like horse has 18 roles and just makes the players fit them rather than fit the players he has
I have been saying this for ages. He has a preconceived way he wants players to play. He never changes his plan to fit the talent at hand. He moulds the talent to the plan which doesn't always work. I think if we retain him for much longer we will start to lose players. I think Logan is very unhappy, hence a 1 year extension. If things do not change by the end of next year expect to see Logan go west. he won't be the only one. There are several contracts up for grabs at the end of the season and as yet no movement. Wicks, McLean, Melican, Rankin, McAndrew, Hall-Khan, Gould & Stephens all come up this year. Gould and Stephens will probably be delisted and go back to SA where either Port or crows will pick them up and make good players out of them.
Gulden, Cunningham, Rowbottom, Florent, Fox & Hayward are contracted until the end of 2024. If they do not see a premiership looming we lose the lot, except Errol & Harry.

I think these players important; Wicks, McLean, McAndrew, Gulden, Rowbottom, Florent, Fox, Rankin & Hayward. I want to explore the natural game of each and see if this is the way they are being used.

Hayward; As a junior Will was a one on pone specialist who kicked many goals. He kicked 9 goals in an U18 prelim and 4.1 out of 8 goals. What sort of player was the younger Hayward and why did we draft him? Well, he was a one on one specialist forward pocket/FF. He could take that special mark and if given enough room he could destroy a side, as he proved in the 2016 Prelim. his ability to get free if the other forwards created space was uncanny. His one on one marking skills are superb.

How do we use him? As a defensive forward on players like Nick Haynes. Is this the best use for him? No way. create a little space for him and he kicks a bag. Same with Heeney. are we getting the best out of him? No. I think with the better use he could be an absolute super star. Should stay but if we do not hit a premiership window soon, Crows will come calling

Rankin; He has been playing very well in the reserves but has not been given a chance. Did not look out of place in his first game, in the very few minutes he played. now that lloyd is out it's time to see what Rankin can do before a Victorian team snatches him up. But we need to look at a new contract if he plays a few good AFL games.

Rowbottom; Longmire might just have been told by some of his assistants to stop misusing Rowie as a tagger and let him play footy. Because lately that is exactly what he has been doing. Playing great in and under footy. Should stay.

McLean: He has been used exactly as he should be. He has improved 100 fold. He must be a sponge because all the ruck lessons have been learned well from Coxy. I am now starting to doubt he will stay because he has not signed yet. His management started negotiations in late June.

Melican: I doubt Lewis will be offered a new contract. There don't seem to be any negotiations.

McAndrew; I don't think we can afford to lose him. He needs to get a new contract ASAP.

Gould; What sort of player did we draft? He is a Medium/Tall defender. His style was as an intercept mark and run on player. He kept medium/3rd talls very quiet as well as getting plenty of ball against them and often going all the way from Fb to the goal at the other end with good penetrating run.
how did we play him? As a lockdown defender. He had to learn to do this as he is not a natural lockdown player. he has also had to play taller than he is in the VFl due to an obvious lack of talls. He has played Fullback, definitely not his bnatural position. We have changed the shape of his game so much it is not recognisable from the type he played at Glenelg so successfully. In other words I think we have totally stuffed what may have been a very good talent. He will be delisted and picked up by Port as a Rookie

Hall-Khan; A lively small forward who can kick goals. He burst into the VFL last year. But again, we get a very smart small forward and then stick him on a wing or half back. What? He kicks goals. Leave him forward. Probably be delisted

Stephens; Give him a go in the mids. He is not a bad winger but is having a dog of a second season. But obviously his papers are stamped. He will go back to Adelaide and star for the Crows.

Florent; I still would like to see him moving through the mids. He is so damaging if he gets the tap out on the run. I think with McAndrew's ability to pinpoint taps he could be a huge weapon. Needs a long term contract. Clubs are already sniffing.

Fox; he will play to the end of next year. I prefer him back and Ollie to the mids. Why this was not made to happen on the weekend is mindboggling when we were getting flogged at the clearances. At one stage in the last there were two fast Tigers and three slow Swans. Yuk.

Gulden; Stays. Should be added to the leadership group.

Cunningham; Harry is not having a bad season even if he had a dog of a match against Richmond. His jovb was to keep players far faster than him quiet and was not up to that task. Last contract.

Bad loss. Another game we let slip. Why is it when Buddy plays we change our game plan? What happened in the first half was non-existent after that.

Disappointing about 2023, we are a better side than our position reflects.

How many games have we been up at 3qtr time this year, then lost?

Positives though to come out of this year is Gus, form of Gulden and Blakey.

Negatives is the lack of plan B, C and D from Horse. I'm not going to bash him because I think our losses are all not on him but I feel he doesn't pull the trigger early enough in games or doesn't even use the alternate plans.

Not sure what us worse, losing games this year when we were hammered by Cats/Demons or losing the others when we were either the better side/on par with the opposition.

Anyway. I'm sure we are all feeling the disappointment of 2023. Sad to see a champion like Buddy go out the way he is at the moment but age has gotten to him.

Franklin took 4 of the 12 inside 50 marks. McInnerney, McDonald, McLean, Heeney and Hayward shared the other 8 marks.

We went to Franklin successfully 33% of the time. With 6 other players creating 66% options. 54% seems like a number plucked from somewhere.

yeah so bullshit most likely or just a guess at best, explains why Wolftone never answers I guess and keeps peddling the misinformation as fact

cheers mate

not Sure Rowbottom trying to break a tackle is at the same level.
It's all relative to the position they play. A key part of Rowbottom's job as an inside mid is to break tackles. A key part of Gulden's job as an outside player is to hit targets. Neither could do what each other does as effectively. That's just one example though. I offered others where players have tried to create things as part of their role within the team, and when they fail, don't we hear about it.

So much there, but...

Rankin hasn't debuted.
Stephens is not South Australian.
Melican will be offered a contract, unless we bring in multiple better KPDs. Whether he stays is another question.

Warner bites off more than he can chew too regularly and needs a more defensive mind set.

Everyone has to break tackles but Rowys job is surely to distribute the ball to others in the clear. Not sure the criticism has come from. Too many caught HTB?

You've demonstrated the double standard I'm talking about in that very comment. Why is Gulden making a risky play "trying to create" but Warner making a risky play "biting off more than he can chew"?

Whats our best win? took me a while but it has to be Carlton??

Should of lost to North.

Wins against Suns, Hawthorn, Richmond, Eagles, North, Carlton.

Absolutely putrid no excuses for this group to have fallen this far

There is a possibility the Swans have been ‘instructed’ by the AFL to play Buddy….even if Horse thinks he’s disrupting the game plan.

I think the AFL see a need to ‘maintain the profile’ as its his last year- I just can’t see why Horse would keep picking such an obviously out of form player.

Bs they instructed us to pick him

and his form is better than the alternative

On Melican we have gained Arnold and lost Paddy. If we pick up one KPD in trades he is surplus.

You’d be surprised but it was an ex-player that tossed this little tidbit out. Hasn’t played recently…..so could well be scuttlebutt.

I disagree with your view on his presence however - I think they've looked hopelessly disrupted every time he’s played this year.

because proportionately he does it less and Warners screw ups are sometimes a little selfish and not creating and his erratic commitment to two way running is a weakness in his game. Far different stuffing up a hard pass rather than bombing it long.
