Sooner or later there is going to be a GF played by only interstate teams.

Came pretty darn close in '96, was almost a Bears v Swans.
Who do you think will be the first to do it?

Brisbane v West Coast??
Adelaide v Sydney???

And what if it was a Freo v WC or Port v Adelaide??? What sort of crowd would it draw that good old 'G'???

Thoughts pls people.

Well Pa, let's just hope it's the Lions vs whosoever (preferably Freo

).

It'll be a sell out no matter what. Won't be a capacity crowd though, as those harumphing old MCC nobs would be likely to boycott.

I cant wait for that day you speak of! Wont it be wondeful to see the looks on all those self rightous Victorians who think they own the football world!!!!

I don't think any of the interstate teams are capable of making the grand final this year, or probably even next year.

The interstate Grand Final to end all grand finals will be when Adelaide eventually play Port Adelaide. It'll be bizarre when tens of thousands of croweaters come pouring down the M1 from Adelaide to Melbourne. They'll probably trash the city before leaving.

EHEHEHEHEH Yeah Laugh it up

Ill tell you what
We will see who is laughing after the Anzac day match and the dockers clean up.

We will talk then ok

ehehehehehehe

It will happen, but it's just a matter of time. But I agree with Tom FC that It wont be happening for the next 2 years. I think going on form Brisbane vs Fremantle would be the most likely matchup, but dont rule out Sydney and of course the Eagles!

Would be more interesting to see actually how many true supporters would end up with Grand Final tickets...
And more so just WHO the HOB NOBS would go for...
Sorry forgot they are only there for a good time, what about the true footy suporter, the little people...

LIONS FOREVER !!!!!!

Ok this isn't aimed at mags. Its just that he mentioned it.

Now lets take dans example of Bris v Syd

Now its too non vic teams right
So instead of fans having to purchase tickets to see there team in the grandfinal.
And a few people have mentioned the poor turn out it would attract

WELL
Why not play the grandfinal in the either Sydney or Brisban.
Make it a truely national competion.
And go from the VFL to the AFL (just jokes)
Seriously,I know this aint going to impress many but.
There should be a rule along with Dans Minor premireship plan that the team that finished higher of the 2 grandfinalist play the grandfinal in their own state.
Games in memblourne between vic and non vic team, wether they be during the season or the grandfinal are always in the vic teams advantage. And quite often it the interstate team in the finals that misses out ie Eagles.

Its time for a change.
Lets bring in Dans rule which i agree with and make the grand final ground on the basis of the highest finishing grand finalist.

I'm with you sabre and Dan.

VFL is showing when it comes to GF day. Why Melbourne? The team that finishes highest should get the final in there own state and not the MCG. I love watching the GF at the MCG but in all fairness, there is more than one oval to play footy at in Australia.

I guess a grand final involving Sydney, Brisbane or both, still has a Melbourne ring about it. The South Melbourne and Fitzroy fans would be there in droves.

If it was a Adelaide/West Coast grand final, it's a great opportunity for the Melbourne public to go to a game and abuse both teams. Two for the price of one!!!

May I be facetious?

On current form, and with given prevailing economic realities, the first non Victorian grand final would probably include the Kangaroos.

Brisbane are the only non-Victorian side that have a chance of challenging in the next year or two, and that is the kind of timeframe the Kangaroos would have to be looking at.

A longer term prediction: Kangarood vs Southport!

I think we are all dreaming if we think that the AFL Grand Final will ever be played anywhere except in Melbourne...

Thanks Mags for thinking of us interstate supporters...

True the lions do have a base in Melbourne, but how many extras would jump on the band wagon if they were to make the Grand Final...(probably all the ones that still cant handle the merger to this day)...

It's comments like that, which show a distinct lack of tact. You're not related to Noel Gordon by any chance, are you?

Seeing we are talking about 'fickle' Lions supporters, why not look at another variety.

What about all the Brisbane based Lions fans who also support a Vic based team. I mean, how many turncoats are there every time the Lions play a Vic side at the Gabba? Heaps.
Ever wondered why the behind the goals support for Vic sides (Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton etc.) is so great at the Gabba? There's your answer.

Gee, I wonder who they'll all support come GF day when both of their teams are in the finals?

Can anyone work out the theoretical possibility ?

I think there are 120 different combinations of match ups with 16 clubs in total

There are 6 interstate clubs so there are 15 possible combinations of clubs there

There are 10 VIC teams so 45 different compinations there

So the 'pure' odds are, in any 10 year period

1.25 All Interstate
3.75 All VIC
5 One of each

Given in the last 10 years (not a true 16 team comp) there have been 4 all-VIC and 6 Combinations we are probably due for 2 all Interstate finals in a row.

Now as we barely had one Interstate team in the finals last year, and none in the top four it would take four years to get a decent I/S representation in the top 4 or 8

only so many teams get into the eight in any given year - but recently the top eight has had 3 interstate teams quite regularly.

The current comp structure has had foru years so in the next 6 years we could expect 2 more all-VIC, 3 Combinations and 1 all-Interstate grand finals

Of course there are several anomolies that stuff up these 'pure' statistics

- of the 20 grand finalists only 10 of the teams have featured - WCE, KAN, CARL, GEEL 3 times each, ESS, ADEL 2 times each and HAW, MEL, STK, SYD once each

If we assume WCE and ADEL might be continually strong teams we find that 18 of the 20 finals appearances are by teams which tend to be in Grand finals 'regularly'

In any finals series the VIC team has an advantage in that more games will be played In victoria than outsidde, giving them an advantage.

However if a VIC team travels for a final they have a poor chance of winning (only one win at all - the very first interstate finals

For any given group of finalists the interstate teams stand a good chance of eliminating each other before the grand final

I think for an all interstate final to occur you will need the following things to occur

1. A very dominant team from interstate having a runaway season

2. Three other interstate teams to also qualify, with one or two in the top five. This would give a good statistical chance of them one of them playing the other in the final

As a possible scenario let's say Brisbane becomes absolutely dominant.

Then we have to have 3 of the other I/S teams to become better than (any three of) Essendon, Kangas, Melbourne, Carlton, Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Geelong. and one or two to be good enough to get in the top four.

Methinks it will be a while yet.

With comments like the one in your last paragraph, it's no wonder that the GF will always be played in Victoria. Get an idea.
