Matt Burgan's Phantom Draft is finally here

ROUND ONE

1 – MELBOURNE – JACK WATTS
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Tall forward, March 26, 1991, 195.8cm, 82.kg
(Draft range: 1-4)

The build up to this year's No.1 draft pick has been riveting and it appears outstanding key forward Jack Watts is most likely to don the red and blue. But don't discount first-year recruiting manager Barry Prendergast calling out dynamic ruckman Nick Naitanui's name. Powerful midfielder Daniel Rich now seems unlikely at No.1. Although Melbourne would dearly love one of each type of player, it could be argued a tall forward is most required, particularly with the retirement of club great David Neitz this year. And Watts fits the bill perfectly as a 10-year-plus prospect.

2 – WEST COAST – NICHOLAS NAITANUI
Swan Districts, WA, Ruckman, May 4, 1990, 200.9cm, 93.9kg
(Draft range: 1-3)

With Watts set for Melbourne, expect West Coast to snap up Naitanui without hesitation. In the now unlikely scenario that Melbourne opts for Naitanui at No.1, expect West Coast to stick tall with Watts, instead of taking local boy Rich. Of Fijian origin, the dreadlocked wonder has been lauded by some recruiters as one of the most exciting prospects in years. A year ago, just days before the 2007 NAB AFL Draft, Carlton recruiting manager Wayne Hughes told the Herald Sun: "People won't believe how much money they will pay to go through the gates to watch him play. I've never seen anything like it."

3 – FREMANTLE – DANIEL RICH
Subiaco, WA, Medium midfielder, June 7, 1990, 183.7cm, 83.2kg
(Draft range: 1-9)

Make no mistake this is where the draft takes shape. It is understood Fremantle is still deciding on Rich or Stephen Hill, with Chris Yarran and Hamish Hartlett also in the mix. For much of the year, Rich has been lauded as a certain top three draft selection – and even a No.1 pick – but Hill's continued growth has massive appeal for Freo. Although Hill has dominated No.3 talk in recent times, it is believed Fremantle will prefer the more proven talent – Rich. What's so intriguing about this selection is that Rich and Hill could also slide to the fringe of the top 10. If Fremantle opts for Hill, Rich could genuinely land at Port Adelaide (4), Essendon (5), Carlton (6), Brisbane Lions (7), Richmond (8) or North Melbourne (9).

4 – PORT ADELAIDE – HAMISH HARTLETT
West Adelaide, SA, Medium midfielder, August 14, 1990, 184.1cm, 76.6kg
(Draft range: 3-8)

The Power is believed to have narrowed their critical choice to two players – Hartlett and Victorian ruckman/forward Tyrone Vickery. But what happens if Fremantle opts for Hill or Hartlett and Rich is available for Port Adelaide? And don't discount Jack Ziebell, Steele Sidebottom or Michael Hurley for Port Adelaide's first pick either. If Vickery lands at the Power, Hartlett will go to one of Essendon, Carlton, Brisbane Lions or Richmond). Still, it will be hard for Port Adelaide to overlook the finest South Australian product from the class of 2008. Hartlett has been branded by one recruiting manager as a genuine superstar.

5 – ESSENDON – MICHAEL HURLEY
Northern Knights, VIC, Tall defender, June 1, 1990, 192.5cm, 91.8kg
(Draft range: 4-8)

Another tantalising scenario looms at No.5. Will the Dons opt for a midfielder/running type or a tall? The prospect of securing Hurley – widely regarded as the best key defender in the draft – appears too good to pass up, considering that Mal Michael has retired and Dustin Fletcher is nearing the end of his stellar career. Hurley has been strongly linked at this pick and Carlton (6), and is unlikely to slide further. One recruiting manager regarded Hurley as one of the top two players in this year's draft. Two smokies have been linked at No.5 – Ashley Smith and Nick Heyne – although it appears too early for them.

6 – CARLTON – CHRIS YARRAN
Swan Districts, WA, Medium forward, December 19, 1990, 180.3cm, 83.3kg
(Draft range: 3-13)

The intrigue continues at No.6. The Blues have been strongly linked to Hartlett and Hurley, but there are no guarantees they will still be there, with Rich, Hill, Ziebell and Trengove also in Carlton's mix. There is a school of thought the Blues will select Yarran if available regardless of who slips through to 6. He could be taken at No. 3 by Fremantle or slide through to No.12 (Sydney Swans). Some recruiters believe Yarran is the most talented player in this year's draft and considering Carlton's small/mid-sized forward options need bolstering, he fits 'best available' and 'needs'.

7 – BRISBANE LIONS – JACK ZIEBELL
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium midfielder, February 28, 1991, 188.4cm, 86.3kg
(Draft range: 4-9)

In the lead-up to the draft, the one top 10 constant has been Ziebell linked to the Lions. Ziebell has been likened by some recruiters as having similar playing attributes to new Lions coach Michael Voss and Collingwood great Nathan Buckley. And it is understood Voss is a big fan, having worked closely with Ziebell during their AIS days. It would surprise if Ziebell was not a top 10 selection.

8 – RICHMOND – TYRONE VICKERY
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Ruckman, May 31, 1990, 200cm, 88.8kg
(Draft range: 4-8)

Expect Vickery or Hartlett to land at Punt Rd. It seems unlikely both will be available for the Tigers at No.8, but should that be the case Hartlett may get the nod. Still, Richmond will be delighted to snare either player. Vickery, whose father John is a rehabilitation and conditioning coach at Richmond, is so highly rated that some recruiters believe he would not be out of place at No.1. The Tigers have also been linked with Yarran, Hill, Hurley, Sidebottom and Sam Blease. Shaun McKernan and Jordan Roughead also shouldn't be discounted, considering they could be taken anywhere from here through to Richmond's second pick (26).

9 – NORTH MELBOURNE – STEELE SIDEBOTTOM
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium defender, January 2, 1991, 183.6cm, 80.5kg
(Draft range: 4-13)

After his stellar 10-goal TAC Cup grand final performance in September, Sidebottom emerged as a likely top 10 prospect. He has been linked as early as Port Adelaide (4) and it is understood he would not slip past St Kilda (13). In recent days, Essendon has been strongly touted with their No.5 pick. But North Melbourne and Sidebottom has been the strongest word at No.9, with Tom Swift and Lewis Johnston also in the Roos' thinking. One talent identifier believes Sidebottom is the best credentialed endurance midfielder in the draft.

10 – ADELAIDE – JACKSON TRENGOVE
Calder Cannons, VIC, Tall forward, November 1, 1990, 196.5cm, 88.5kg
(Draft range: 5-16)

The choice at No.10 is understood to be out of talls Trengove, Phil Davis, Shaun McKernan, Johnston and Ryan Schoenmakers. Hill if available has also been linked, but the quest for height down back and up forward is a priority for the Crows, which points to the flexibility of Trengove, Davis and McKernan. It won't surprise if it's Davis or McKernan, but Trengove's recent medical clearance after knee and hamstring injuries may give him the nod, particularly as many regarded him as a potential top five selection before his setback mid-year. It is also understood, the Crows have spent an enormous amount of time on Trengove in recent weeks.

11 – COLLINGWOOD – STEPHEN HILL
West Perth, WA, Small/medium midfielder, May 1, 1990, 183.7cm, 68.9kg
(Draft range: 3-12)

Hill could go as early as No.3 to Fremantle, while Essendon, Carlton or North Melbourne are also interested. Or is he the one who just slides outside of the top 10? Expect the Pies to swoop if available. There is another intriguing part to Collingwood's first selection – the continual link with Queenslander Dayne Beams. The Magpies are believed to be eager to recruit the stoppage midfielder, but will he last until their second pick at No.29? The Pies have also been closely aligned with Tom Swift, who is regarded as a first-round/priority selection.

12 – SYDNEY SWANS – LEWIS JOHNSTON
North Adelaide, SA, Tall forward, March 3, 1991, 192.8cm, 83.7kg
(Draft Range: 9-17)

A host of scenarios have been tossed up for the Swans' first pick. The most recent indicator is Johnston or Yarran, with one or both likely to be available at No.12. Johnston may have the edge, considering Barry Hall is nearing the end of his outstanding career. There is also a school of thought the Swans will select a player many regard as a top 30/second-round selection, which is where the likes of Nick Suban, Roughead, Ryan Schoenmakers, Heyne, Jarrad Blight, Mitch Brown (Sandringham Dragons), Jordan Lisle could enter the equation.

13 – ST KILDA – SAM BLEASE
Eastern Ranges, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, February 19, 1991, 183.7cm, 70.3kg
(Draft range: 7-18)

Yarran would be snapped up in a second if he fell through to St Kilda at No.13, with Sidebottom and Trengove also in contention. More likely prospects are Blease, Tom Lynch and Roughead. And Blease is the one who has been strongly linked with the Saints all along. Had the Saints decided to pursue Ben Cousins the Saints would have had to take him at No.13, considering the rival Lions had two selections (No.25 and No.41), before St Kilda's next choice.

14 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – AYCE CORDY
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Ruckman, August 6, 1990, 201.7cm, 77.6kg
(Draft range: 14)

Cordy is the only player in this draft already bound to a club, having been claimed by the Western Bulldogs in October through the father/son rule (his father Brian played 124 matches for the Dogs from 1981-88). St Kilda was the only other club to bid for Cordy – offering No.13 – before it was matched by the Dogs' first-round pick.

15 – GEELONG – ASHLEY SMITH
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Medium defender, July 20, 1990, 185.5cm, 84.7kg
(Draft range: 5-32)

Some recruiters believe Smith is as talented as any player in this draft. Widely regarded as a solid top 30 selection, he has even been touted as a smoky for the Dons at No.5. Hawthorn (No.16) and Port Adelaide (No.22) are also genuinely prospects, but in recent weeks, Smith has shot right into contention at Geelong and looms its most likely choice, unless Johnston is available. The Cats will be keeping an eye out for Trengove if he slid through and Swift, who remains right in the reckoning.

16 – HAWTHORN – PHIL DAVIS
North Adelaide, SA, Tall defender, August 30, 1990, 195.6cm, 84.5kg
(Draft range: 8-16)

Davis looms most likely for Adelaide (No.10) or Hawthorn (No.16). The reigning premiers will be looking to add to their tall defensive unit and it is believed Davis is their No.1 priority, barring a slider. But Hawthorn's first pick is not without intrigue, as Ash Smith, Blease, Lynch, Schoenmakers and Jordan Lisle have all been linked.

PRIORITY ROUND

17 – MELBOURNE – TOM LYNCH
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Tall forward, September 15, 1990, 191.7cm, 85.2kg
(Draft range: 12-32)

There are about 20 players who could slot anywhere from the priority selections through to the early part of round three, which makes Melbourne's second and third picks all the more interesting. If Johnston or Blease fall through, expect the Demons to pounce. If not, there are a host of names, including Lynch, Schoenmakers, Roughead, James Strauss, Beams, Nick Suban, McKernan, Mitch Brown (Sandringham Dragons), Lisle, David Zaharakis, Michael Walters or Jarrad Redden in the mix. There is even a realistic chance some from this group could slip through to Melbourne's fourth pick (No.35). Lynch, who is regarded by most recruiters as a top 20-25 selection, spent time at Melbourne during his AIS stint.

18 – WEST COAST EAGLES – TOM SWIFT
Claremont, WA, Medium midfielder, July 6, 1990, 190.9cm, 84.5kg
(Draft range: 9-20)

Injury has cruelly robbed Swift in 2007-08, making him difficult to place in this draft. It would not surprise if he was selected around the top 10 – he has been linked to North Melbourne), Collingwood, Sydney Swans and St Kilda – but the late mail has him sliding towards the back end of the teens. With two picks close to each other, West Coast will be looking at the same group as Melbourne, plus Sandover medallist Hayden Ballantyne.

ROUND TWO

19 – MELBOURNE – JORDAN ROUGHEAD
North Ballarat, VIC, Ruckman, November 3, 1990, 199.7cm, 91.8kg
(Draft range: 8-26)

With Melbourne great Jeff White moving on at the end of the 2008 season, the Demons are eager to find a long-term ruckman. Having missed out on Robert Warnock via the trade period, expect Melbourne to pounce on a ruckman at No.17 or No.19. Roughead, Jarrad Redden or Shaun McKernan will all be in the mix. Roughead, the cousin of Hawthorn premiership player Jarryd, has attracted interest from Richmond, Sydney Swans, St Kilda , Geelong, Hawthorn and Fremantle.

20 – WEST COAST – RYAN SCHOENMAKERS
Norwood, SA, Medium forward, November 8, 1990, 193.4cm, 83.7kg
(Draft range: 10-26)

Don't be surprised if Schoenmakers is a top 10 selection – that's how highly regarded he is. He has been strongly associated with Adelaide, Sydney Swans, Hawthorn and Melbourne. The South Australian forward has been likened in some quarters to Ryan O'Keefe, and is highly rated by the blue and gold.

21 – FREMANTLE – SHAUN McKERNAN
Calder Cannons, VIC, Ruckman/Tall forward, September 1, 1990, 196cm, 94.3kg
(Draft range: 8-26)

McKernan is almost a replica of retired older brother Corey, a member of North Melbourne's 1996 and 1999 premiership teams. The younger version has attracted strong interest in the top 26 from Richmond, Adelaide, Geelong, Melbourne, West Coast and Fremantle. It wouldn't surprise if he was a top 10 pick at the Crows, although interest from Freo has continued to grow stronger in recent weeks. Fremantle will also monitor Swift if he fell through and Roughead. With two picks close together (21 and 24), Heyne, Ballantyne, Walters, Blight, Luke Shuey and Mitch Robinson will be in Fremantle's mix. A smoky could be Tom Hill.

22 – PORT ADELAIDE – MITCH BROWN
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Tall forward, August 28, 1990, 194.9cm, 82.1kg
(Draft range: 12-35)

Brown is set to be this year's Harry Taylor as the earliest non-NAB AFL Draft Camp player selected. Although Brown was a state-screening attendee, interest has sparked blossomed since he grew seven centimeters this year. He is now regarded by most recruiters as a top 30 pick and possible first-rounder. In recent days, he has been strongly linked to Port Adelaide at No.22, although West Coast has also been a hot tip in recent weeks. Schoenmakers if available, Ash Smith, Heyne, Lisle, Walters, Broadbent, Beams, Aaron Cornelius, Steven Motlop and Brad Mangan are in consideration.

23 – ESSENDON – DAVID ZAHARAKIS
Northern Knights, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, February 21, 1990, 181.6cm, 71.9kg
(Draft range: 15-34)

After being overlooked as a bottom-age player last year, Zaharakis now looms as a top 25 pick – at worse he will not slip past Hawthorn (34). West Coast has shown considerable interest and could even take him at No.18 or No.20. Aside from Essendon, Zaharakis has attracted strong interest from Geelong, Hawthorn , Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Richmond. The Dons will also look at Ash Smith, Heyne, Beams, Suban, Cornelius, Motlop, Redden and Dan Hannebery at this point.

24 – FREMANTLE – NICK HEYNE
Gippsland Power, VIC, Medium forward, July 22 1990, 188.2cm, 79.1kg
(Draft range: 5-30)

Heyne's rating has lifted considerably in recent times, with him linked to Essendon as a No.5 bolter. More likely he looms as a first-round/20s selection. Essendon will again closely monitor him at No.23. Ballantyne, Walters, Blight, Shuey, Robinson and Liam Jones will also be in contention.

25 – BRISBANE LIONS – MITCH ROBINSON
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Medium midfielder, June 7 1989, 184.7cm, 79.1kg
(Draft range: 21-41)

Robinson has been closely watched by the Lions and is now firming as its second selection, with Shuey, Beams, Blight and Liam Jones also believed to be in calculations. The Tasmanian has also been linked with Fremantle, Collingwood, the Swans (No.30) and Western Bulldogs. With the Lions' next pick at No.41, it's hard to see Robinson falling any further.

26 – RICHMOND – JAYDYN POST
Western Jets, VIC, Tall forward/defender, December 5, 1989, 194cm, 88.4kg
(Draft range: 23-48)

After producing what many recruiters described as one of the greatest TAC Cup matches of all time late last season – he had 35 disposals and took 18 marks – Post has risen up the pecking order. He now seems a certain top 50 selection, with Essendon, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and St Kilda also interested. The Tigers are believed to be very keen and will have to take him now, considering their next pick is No.58.

27 – NORTH MELBOURNE – JORDAN LISLE
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Tall forward, July 12 1990, 195.1cm, 92.8kg
(Draft range: 12-34)

The son of former North Melbourne big man Mark is right in the mix to join the club his father played 37 matches for from 1984-89. Lisle is yet another who could figure in the first round or slip through to the 30s. Post, Hannebery and Rory Sloane will also be strongly looked at with No.27, but should it come down to Post or Lisle, expect the Roos to go with the latter.

28 – ADELAIDE – LUKE SHUEY
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Medium midfielder, June 2, 1990, 183.5cm, 87.6kg
(Draft range: 15-40)

Most regard Shuey as a 20s/early 30s selection, although there is a suggestion Geelong could take him with its first pick at No.15. The Lions and Tigers are right in the hunt and the Crows have also been strongly linked for several weeks. Don't expect him to drift any further than Carlton (No.40). If available, Lynch would be right in the mix here, with Suban, Broadbent, Sloane, Hannebery and Casey Sibasado also leading prospects.

29 – COLLINGWOOD – DAYNE BEAMS
Southport, QLD, Medium midfielder, February 12, 1990, 186.2cm, 76.9kg
(Draft range: 11-29)

For quite some time now Beams has been closely linked with the Pies after knocking back an offer to play with Gold Coast. Beams is a genuine top 30 selection and has been mooted strongly at No.11, Collingwood's first selection. He is condiered the ideal stoppage player replacement for recently retired captain Scott Burns. The question with Collingwood and Beams is will he slide through to No.29? Opinion is divided, with Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Essendon and the Brisbane Lions also considering him.

30 – SYDNEY SWANS – NICK SUBAN
North Ballarat, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, May 9, 1990, 180.2cm, 83.2kg
(Draft range: 12-35)

Like Beams, Suban has been closely aligned with the Swans for some time. And again, speculation has grown he could be taken as early as its first draft selection (No.12). There is no doubt Suban has plenty of admirers, but placing him is one of the more challenging tasks. He really could be close to the top 10 or just inside the top 30. St Kilda, Melbourne, Essendon, North Melbourne and Adelaide have also been tipped. Late mail has also come through for Will Young or Alistair Smith at this pick.

31 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – LIAM JONES
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Tall forward, February 24, 1991, 195.2cm, 85.6kg
(Draft range: 24-50)

Not only are the Dogs entering this year's draft with the last 'live' choice, they will make back-to-back selections at No.31 and No.32 before signing off for the day. Their first call is likely to come down to two marking forwards, Liam Jones and Cornelius. Jones has also been linked with Fremantle, Brisbane Lions, the Swans, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide. Also in the mix are Adam Varcoe, Michael Gugliotta, Steven Gaertner, Neville Jetta and Liam Shiels.

32 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – TOM LEE
Claremont, WA, Tall forward, January 2, 1991, 190.6cm, 85.8kg
(Draft range: 31-not selected)

Having made the call between two tall forwards at No.31 the Dogs are unlikely to plump for Cornelius now, but are tipped to provide the first smoky. Recruiting manager Scott Clayton has the knack of producing left-field selections and this one looms as a specific choice – an athletic forward who can also run in the midfield. While Lee went to the WA state-based screening, there has been little talk about him in the build-up to the draft.

33 – GEELONG – MATTHEW BROADBENT
Eagles, SA, Tall defender, August 1, 1990, 189.3cm, 83.2kg
(Draft range: 15-33)

It would be very difficult to see the Cats pass up Broadbent at No.33, considering he is in their mix at No.15. The South Australian has plenty of admirers, including Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Adelaide. He is widely praised among the recruiting fraternity and with Geelong looking to bolster its defence, he fits the bill. Cornelius will also be seriously looked at if available.

34 – HAWTHORN – JAMES STRAUSS
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Medium midfielder, June 14, 1990, 185.2cm, 81.8kg
(Draft range: 16-36)

Another player who could be a late first-rounder through to an early third-round choice, Strauss has attracted strong interest from Hawthorn, Melbourne, West Coast and Richmond. It's believed if the Demons don't select Strauss at No.17 or No.19, then the Hawks will beat them to the punch at No.34. Redden, Shuey, Liam Jones, Wright, Motlop, Tom Gillies, O'Keefe and Warren Benjamin are also in the mix.

Burgatron 2008 - Who we are linked to in the draft

http://www.afl.com.au/News/NEWSARTICLE/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=70169

50 – HAWTHORN – RHYS O'KEEFE
North Adelaide, SA, Medium defender, August 8, 1990, 188.3cm, 83.1kg
(Draft range: 30-61)

O'Keefe could realistically land between the second and fourth round. Some recruiters rate him highly and believe he will be a top 30 selection, but he may just drift slightly, with Hawthorn likely to monitor his whereabouts strongly. The Swans, with picks No.30 and No.61 – which seems to be around about his mark – is also a contender, as is Carlton (No.40). The Hawks are also likely to consider Jetta, Benjamin, Jordan Jones, Shiels and Hunt.

63 – HAWTHORN – JORDAN JONES
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Tall defender, June 29, 1990, 189.4cm, 85.7kg
(Draft range: No.39-not selected)

Jones will be strongly considered at No.50 and No.63 by the Hawks. Adelaide (60) and the Swans (61) have also shown strong interest and could spoil Hawthorn's chances. West Coast at No.52 is also a genuine chance, with Geelong (No.49) an outsider. Jetta, Hunt, Kade Klemke, Shane Page, Savage, Tom Simpkin, Tom Hill, Dawson, Daly, Martin and Bruest are all potential options for the Hawks.

75 – HAWTHORN – DANNY MEYER
Richmond, VIC, Medium midfielder, August 3, 1986, 183cm, 76kg
(Draft range: 63-not selected)

Originally taken at No.12 in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, Meyer suffered his fair share of injuries at Punt Rd and was never fully able to make a go of it. Still, there is no doubting his talent or kicking skills and don't be surprised if Hawks of the Power have a crack late in the draft. With Port Adelaide set to pass on No.84 with an aim to take Josh Carr in the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, expect the Hawks to swoop here, three before the Power's next pick (No.78).

ROUND THREE

35 – MELBOURNE – MICHAEL WALTERS

Swan Districts, WA, Small/medium midfielder, January 7, 1991, 177.3cm, 73.1kg
(Draft range: 17-37)

Melbourne will be eagerly-awaiting to see who slips through from the second round, and the way the cards could fall, Walters could be still around. If he is, expect the Demons to snap him up before his local teams pounce at No.36 (West Coast) or No.37 (Fremantle). Walters is highly-rated by the Demons and could quite realistically be taken at No.17 or No.19.

36 – WEST COAST – JARRAD BLIGHT
Swan Districts, WA, Medium defender, January 24, 1991, 188.8cm, 73.4kg
(Draft range: 18-36)

The hot tip for Blight is to West Coast. While more likely at No.18 or No.20, he is also a realistic chance of slipping through to No.36. No doubt Fremantle will monitor his whereabouts closely at No.21 and No.24, with the Brisbane Lions (25) and Collingwood (29) also right in the mix. And don't discount the Sydney Swans pulling off a surprise by plucking Blight with its first pick (12) or more likely its second (30).

37 – FREMANTLE – HAYDEN BALLANTYNE
Peel Thunder, WA, Small forward, July 16, 1987, 174cm, 77kg
(Draft range: 18-53)

The selection of Ballantyne is another sub-plot to this year's draft. The 2008 Sandover Medallist (he won the WAFL's best-and-fairest award with 75 goals as a small forward) has drawn parallels with former West Coast dynamo Phil Matera. He has been linked as early as No.18 to West Coast and as late as No.53 to Fremantle, with both WA clubs hotly contesting his services. It would be a surprise if he was snapped up by a non-Western Australian club.

38 – PORT ADELAIDE – JARRAD REDDEN
Eagles, SA, Ruckman, December 27, 1990, 202cm, 88kg
(Draft range: 17-55)

The South Australian ruckman is a difficult one to place, although he has been linked with Melbourne, Richmond, Port Adelaide and Essendon. The Power is believed to be very keen, considering a ruckman is on its shopping list post Brendon Lade. Redden is widely regarded as the next best ruck prospect behind Naitanui, Vickery, Roughead and McKernan. Cornelius, Liam Jones, Sloane, Wright, Motlop and Mangan are other names to keep an eye on here.

39 – GEELONG – AARON CORNELIUS
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Tall forward, May 29, 1990, 191.9cm, 83.7kg
(Draft range: 22-49)

Cornelius is regarded very highly by some recruiters, although he has drifted a little in the pecking order. It would not surprise if he was taken early in the second round or the back end of the third. Port Adelaide, Essendon, Sydney Swans, Western Bulldogs and Geelong have been the most common links. The Cats may also consider Luke Rounds and Ben Bucovaz at this pick.

40 – CARLTON – WILL YOUNG
North Ballarat, VIC, Tall forward, August 3, 1990, 191.6cm, 83.2kg
(Draft range: 29-not selected)

Recruiters are split on Young. Some believe he is a top-30 pick, but others aren't convinced he will be selected at all. The general consensus is that he will be taken because of his size and his ability up forward. In recent days, he has been strongly aligned to the Sydney Swans at No.30, with Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs also in contention. The Blues will also keep watch on him as they look to add to their forward stocks. O'Keefe and Motlop will also be right in the mix for the Blues.

41 – BRISBANE LIONS – RHYS STANLEY
West Adelaide, SA, Ruckman, December 1, 1990, 200.4cm, 88.5kg
(Draft range: No.29-not selected)

With just Jamie Charman and Matthew Leuenberger as bona fide ruckmen on their list, the Brisbane Lions will be eager to snap up another big man. Stanley, who has also attracted strong interest from Collingwood and Richmond, will be in the mix for the Lions at No.41, particularly as the Pies are likely to pounce with back-to-back picks at No.45 and No.46. Liam Jones and Jack Redden loom as other potential choices at this point.

42 – PORT ADELAIDE – RORY SLOANE
Eastern Ranges, VIC, Medium defender, March 17, 1990, 181.9cm, 77.8kg
(Draft range: 22-54)

Sloane has attracted plenty of interest and could realistically be a top 30 selection. North Melbourne (27) and Adelaide (28) are the two most likely, and don't dismiss Port Adelaide with No.22. He is unlikely to fall past the Power at this selection, North Melbourne (No.43) or Adelaide (No.44).

43 – NORTH MELBOURNE – DAN HANNEBERY
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, February 24, 1991, 181.7cm, 76.7kg
(Draft range: 23-55)

Similar to Sloane, Hannebery could easily be a top 30 draft selection or slip through to the early 50s. It's hard to see him getting past North Melbourne at No.43, and he could even be a Roo by No.27, as it's believed the Kangas have kept a close eye on him. The Roos will also keep tabs on the progress of Sloane, Shiels and Matthew DeBoer.

44 – ADELAIDE – CASEY SIBASADO
Northern Territory Thunder, NT, Tall defender, October 13, 1990, 192.9cm, 84.7kg
(Draft range: 28-not selected)

Some talent identifiers believe Sibosado is a top 25 selection and others believe he will be chosen as a rookie. Still, expect him to find a home in this draft, particularly with Adelaide believed to be red hot at their picks No.28, No.44 or No.60. Fremantle will also be in the mix and don't be surprised if Port Adelaide snaffles him at No.54 if Adelaide passes. Keep a watch on Hannebery, Wright, Motlop, Jack Redden, Shiels, Bucovaz, Gugliotta, Nathan O'Keefe and Chris Hall for the Crows.

45 – COLLINGWOOD – SAM WRIGHT
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium forward, July 15, 1990, 188.1cm, 76kg
(Draft range: 28-54)

Highly-rated by the Pies, Wright could conceivably land at No.29 and it's unlikely he would slip past Collingwood's back-to-back picks at No.45 and No.46. He is also attracting interest from Adelaide, Hawthorn, West Coast and Port Adelaide. Stanley, Mangan, Rounds, Shiels, DeBoer, Benjamin, Bucovaz and Taylor Hunt have also been linked to the Pies with these picks.

46 – COLLINGWOOD – TOM GILLIES
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Tall defender, March 7, 1990, 192.3cm, 86.5kg
(Draft range: 29-50)

With St Kilda (47 and 48) and Hawthorn (50) very interested in Gillies, the Pies are likely to swoop on the full-back before them. That's unless the Hawks fly under the radar at No.34. He has certainly come up the pecking order in recent weeks. Stanley, Mangan and DeBoer will again be strongly considered here if not taken at No.45.

47 – ST KILDA – STEVEN GAERTNER
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Tall defender, January 2, 1990, 199.3cm, 86.6kg
(Draft range: 31-not selected)

Until Tuesday night, picks No.47 or No.48 were viewed as the ones the Saints might use to snare West Coast great Ben Cousins. Instead, after a lengthy review, the Saints withdrew from pursuing him. One player who could now come under serious consideration here is Gaertner , one of the best athletic talls in the draft. Despite this, he divides opinion on where he sits in the overall scheme of things. Some believe he could be on the fringe of the top 30 and others think he is a rookie. It is not out of the question that he could also be selected by the Western Bulldogs (31 or 32), Collingwood (45, 46 or 73) or the Sydney Swans (30 or 61). It is understood St Kilda came within an inch of drafting him in 2007.

48 – ST KILDA – MATTHEW DEBOER
Claremont, WA, Medium midfielder, March 10, 1990, 186.7cm, 83kg
(Draft range: 37-not selected)

DeBoer is a 50/50 chance despite an outstanding year at for a player of his age. Again, he could be close to the top 30 or taken as a rookie. Collingwood, Fremantle and North Melbourne have all been linked. If Post or Gillies are available, look out for them at St Kilda's consecutive picks, with Shiels and Hunt also in the mix.

49 – GEELONG – LUKE ROUNDS
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Medium midfielder, February 10, 1991, 180.9cm, 74.5kg
(Draft range: 39-not selected)

There is a strong chance Rounds will be snapped up by Geelong. A local boy from the Falcons, Rounds has also attracted interest from Essendon (67 or 79) and Collingwood (73) late in the draft. Bucovaz and Hall are two other strong contenders for Geelong's final pick, with Shiels, Jetta, Bart McCulloch, Jordan Jones, Jamie Sheahan, Sam McGarry, Riley Milne and Lance Daly also in the mix.

ROUND FOUR

51 – MELBOURNE – NEVILLE JETTA
Swan Districts, WA Medium forward, February 12, 1990, 179.6cm, 76.6kg
(Draft range: 31-79)

Jetta looms as a likely draftee with several clubs expressing interest, although exactly where he fits remains a matter of debate. Port Adelaide (No.38, No.42 or No.54), Geelong (No.49), Hawthorn (No.50) and Essendon (No.55, No.67 or No.79) are all possibilities. He may go as early as the Western Bulldogs at No.31 or No.32. The Demons are also likely to start monitoring Jack Redden and Glen Dawson.

52 – WEST COAST – JAMIE BENNELL
Swan Districts, WA, Small defender,, June 7, 1990, 178.5cm, 68.2kg
(Draft range: 36-not selected)

West Coast is believed to be very keen on Jamie Bennell with its final selection and may even consider him at No.36. A small, running defender would be a welcome addition to the club and Bennell fits the bill. The Tigers are also understood to be keen on Bennell. Others in contention for West Coast at its final pick include Adam Cockie, Jones and Bart McCulloch.

53 – FREMANTLE – WARREN BENJAMIN
Claremont, WA, May 10, 1990, Medium midfielder, 187.3cm, 84.8kg
(Draft range: 34-77)

Benjamin looks set to be drafted, having risen into contention in recent times. Hawthorn, Fremantle and Collingwood are believed to be the most interested – it's now just a matter of where he falls. Clancee Pearce, Jack Redden, Sibasado and Ian Richardson will also be in the mix depending on their status at this point. Benjamin is the younger brother of Clinton, who was recently delisted by Carlton.

54 – PORT ADELAIDE – STEVEN MOTLOP
Wanderers, NT, Medium forward, March 12, 1991, 181.7cm, 67.2kg
(Draft range: 23-67)

Due to recent injury and subsequent shoulder surgery, it is a little difficult to know where Motlop sits in the pool. He is certain to be selected. Port Adelaide appears to be the frontrunners considering his brother Daniel and cousin Marlon are at the club. Essendon), Adelaide, Carlton and Hawthorn will also be in the mix. Sibasado, Shiels, Bucovaz, Jetta, Mangan, McCulloch and Jack Redden are names to keep in mind.

55 – ESSENDON – LUKE THOMPSON
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Tall defender/forward, February 8, 1991, 192.4cm, 85.7kg
(Draft range: 45-79)

Expect the bottom-ager to get a crack in this year's draft due to his potential next year in the TAC Cup. Thompson has been linked with Essendon and Collingwood from the mid-way stage of the draft. Rounds, Jetta, McCulloch and Tyson Slattery will also be around the mark.

56 – FREMANTLE – CLANCEE PEARCE
Swan Districts, WA, Medium defender, October 23, 1990, 182.3cm, 89.8kg
(Draft range: 37-not selected)

There is a chance Pearce could get overlooked, but it seems more likely than not that he will get drafted. Fremantle has shown considerable interest and could select him at one of their later picks – 37, 53, 56, 68 and 77. Carlton (40, 65 and 80) has also expressed interest. Ruckmen Zac Clarke and Tom Hill will also come into Fremantle's thinking.

57 – BRISBANE LIONS – JACK REDDEN
Glenelg, SA, Medium midfielder, December 9, 1990, 188.6cm, 74.4kg
(Draft range: 41-82)

The Lions have been strongly aligned with Redden and it is understood Adelaide, Melbourne and Fremantle are also interested. He could slot in at No.41, No.57 or No.69 for the Lions. Redden tested very well at the recent South Australian state-based screening, which has pushed his cause. Glen Dawson, Todd Banfield, Hall and Mitchell Banner are also likely to come under consideration.

58 – RICHMOND – ADAM COCKIE
Subiaco, WA, Small/medium midfielder, April 18, 1989, 180.3cm, 82.2kg
(Draft range: 52-79)

Cockie has been linked to at least four clubs – Richmond (58 and 70), Collingwood (73), Essendon (67 and 79) and West Coast (52) – with the Tigers believed to be keen. Richmond will also monitor the whereabouts of Jetta, Shiels, Paul Cahill, McCulloch and Bryn Weadon. Former Bomber Tom Hislop could also be in the mix here, but he seems more likely for No.70.

59 – NORTH MELBOURNE – LIAM SHIELS
Eastern Ranges, VIC, Medium midfielder, April 29, 1991, 183.4cm, 79.1kg
(Draft range: 31-80)

Clubs are very keen on the bottom-aged Shiels, who has also been linked to Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond and St Kilda. He has even been linked to the Western Bulldogs at No.31 or No.32. The Roos are believed to be very keen on Shiels and he could be right in the mix at No.59. Tom Hill, Tom Rockliff and Shane Savage have also been linked to the Kangas at No.59 or No.71.

60 – ADELAIDE – ZAC CLARKE
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Ruckman, September 28, 1990, 202.5cm, 82.5kg
(Draft range: 37-77)

Fremantle and Adelaide have expressed strong interest in the Victorian ruckman. A towering figure at more than 200cm, Clarke appears likely to be drafted by Fremantle with one of its five picks from 37 to 77, or Adelaide (44, or 72). Dawson, Jones, Bucovaz, Gugliotta, Zac Clarke, Nathan O'Keefe and Chris Hall are believed to also be in Adelaide's mix.

61 – SYDNEY SWANS – ALISTAIR SMITH
Perth, WA, Small/medium midfielder, August 8, 1990, 183.5cm, 79kg
(Draft range: 30-not selected)

Smith has been strongly linked with the Swans at both No.30 and No.61 – and it is quite conceivable he will be available at both selections. One recruiter said Smith has 'truckloads' of speed, which will improve his status. This is the Swans' third and final pick of the draft. Others in the mix include Jones, Banner, Matthew Martin, Luke Breust and former Cat Jason Davenport.

62 – ST KILDA – TAYLOR HUNT
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Medium defender, November 5, 1990, 182.6cm, 83.4kg
(Draft range: No.45-not selected)

The former discus and javelin thrower has attracted the interest of St Kilda, Hawthorn and Collingwood. The Saints have been monitoring him for some time, as he fits the small, speedy type running from defence and into the midfield they seek. Young and Thompson will be monitored with Luke Lowden, Campbell Heath, Brayden O'Hara, Alex Stopp or Tim Ruffles also in contention at No.62, No.74 or No.83 for the Saints.

ROUND FIVE

64 – MELBOURNE – GLEN DAWSON

Eagles, SA, Medium forward, September 30, 1990, 186cm, 75.1kg
(Draft range: 51-not selected)

The Demons are believed to be keen on Dawson, who has also been linked to Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide in the back end of the draft. Likened to Brett Burton, Dawson is also elite junior cricketer. He is more likely than not to be drafted. Jack Redden will also be in the mix for the Demons.

65 – CARLTON – BRAD MANGAN
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium forward, April 27, 1991, 186.7cm, 87kg
(Draft range: 22-80)

Mangan's draft prospects are a matter of considerable debate. Some recruiters believe he has shot up into the top 30, while others say he could be claimed in the last 10 picks. Mangan has even been mooted as a Port Adelaide smoky at No.22 or No.42, with Collingwood also keen. Carlton is also a strong tip and it would not surprise if the Blues took him at No.40. Hawthorn is also believed to have sounded him out. Pearce, Shiels and Zach Sengstock are others who have been linked late with Carlton.

66 – PORT ADELAIDE – MITCHELL BANNER
Western Jets, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, 5 June 1990, 178.6cm, 78.7kg
(Draft range: 57-not selected)

Many talent experts rate Banner highly, but others view him only as a rookie possibility. He has been strongly linked to Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions in the 50-plus section of the draft. With the Power set to use five of their six picks after No.38, expect Banner to come into their calculations. Varcoe, Bucovaz, Paul Cahill, Rockliff, Ben Speight, O'Hara and Liam Anthony are expected to be thereabouts at this pick.

67 – ESSENDON – BART McCULLOCH
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Ruckman, September 23, 1990, 198.9cm, 86kg
(Draft range: 49-not selected)

There is a school of thought McCulloch could be anywhere from a top-30 selection through to a rookie. Overall, the consensus is the Tasmanian ruckman will get drafted. Along with the Bombers, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Richmond and West Coast have all shown interest. He is more than likely to be a 50-plus selection. Tyson Slattery, Cockie, Thompson and Hayden Skipworth are others under consideration. But the Dons are keen to add to their ruck division, with McCulloch being a sought after prospect late.

68 – FREMANTLE – TOM HILL
Northern Knights, VIC, Ruckman, April 7, 1991, 198.5cm, 78.2kg
(Draft range: 21-not selected)

Hill's draft forecast is classic for a still developing ruckman. He has another year at TAC Cup level, but it would not surprise if a club took him early in the draft or late, just to get him into its system. Hill has also been linked with Collingwood, Geelong, North Melbourne and St Kilda. It will be an interesting pick for Freo, considering it could be their last pick of the draft – the club is believed to be deciding on the day whether it will use No.77 or pass and use it in the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft. It may even take ex-Lion Matthew Moody with this pick on the day. Others linked to Fremantle late include local products John Bennell, Alroy Gilligan, Lance Daly, Taylor Gilchrist, Blake Broadbent, Greg Broughton and Daniel Murray. Don't be surprised if Tom Hislop is also in the mix.

69 – BRISBANE LIONS – ROHAN BAIL
Mt Gravatt, QLD, Medium midfielder, 19 years old, 183cm, 91kg
(Draft range: 65-not selected)

A non-NAB AFL Draft Camp or state-screening invitee, Bail has done it the hard way. He represented the senior Queensland state side against Western Australia this year and also finished fourth in the Grogan Medal, the AFLQ's best-and-fairest award. Originally from Victoria, Bail has attracted strong interest in recent weeks, with the Lions the likely destination. But don't dismiss Carlton, Essendon or St Kilda with one of their last selections.

70 – RICHMOND – TOM HISLOP
Essendon, TAS, Medium midfielder, June 7, 1988, 185cm, 85kg
(Draft range: No.53-not selected)

Taken at No.20 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, Hislop was delisted at the end of the 2008 season, largely due to some off-field issues. He remains a highly-regarded prospect and will be claimed with one of Fremantle's selections from No.50 onwards or by Richmond at No.58 or No.70. Collingwood has also been linked, but the Tigers and Freo are favoured. If Hislop is unavailable and West Coast passes up Jamie Bennell, don't be surprised to see him slide through to No.70.

71 – NORTH MELBOURNE – TOM ROCKLIFF
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium forward, February 22, 1990, 184.3cm, 82.6kg
(Draft range: 54-not selected)

As a whole, the recruiting fraternity can't speak highly enough of Rockliff, respecting him as a person and a player. But the question that is constantly thrown up is where does he fit in the overall scheme? It remains unclear if he will be drafted, but you can bet North Melbourne and Port Adelaide will certainly monitor his whereabouts late in the draft. For the Roos, he could be the ideal replacement for the retired Shannon Grant up forward. Hill and Savage will also be considered if still available.

72 – ADELAIDE – BEN BUCOVAZ
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Medium defender, November 2, 1990, 188.4cm, 88.2kg
(Draft range: 39-not selected)

Bucovaz could quite easily be a top-40 selection, slide to the back end or indeed become a rookie. There has been strong interest from Adelaide, which could take him as early as No.44, if it believes Collingwood (45 and 46) or Geelong (49) – with its last pick – will have a crack. Alex Stopp is one player to keep an eye on around this mark as well.

73 – COLLINGWOOD – SHANE SAVAGE
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Medium midfielder, January 5, 1991, 185.1cm, 74.5kg
(Draft range: 59-not selected)

Savage, a bottom-age player, has attracted considerable interest late in the draft, with Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Collingwood all interested. It is the Pies' final pick, and more than likely will be used. Other names to monitor late for the Magpies are Tom Hill, Jamie Bennell, Cockie, Gilligan, Kyal Horsley and Jack Weston. And don't discount ex-Roo Leigh Brown.

74 – ST KILDA – LUKE LOWDEN
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Ruckman, February 22, 1991, 204cm, 86.8kg
(Draft range: 47-not selected)

The towering young ruckman is believed to be firmly in the sights of the Saints and could be plucked as early as their second pick at No.47. He does seem more likely as a late pick, given he is a bottom-age player and very raw. Don't discount Bail, if available, at this selection either.

ROUND SIX

76 – MELBOURNE – PASS

Will the Demons use their final selection or hold one over the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, remembering it has the first pick in that meeting? In previous years, clubs with the first or second picks in the Pre-Season Draft usually have someone in mind. The Demons are likely to wait until Saturday – it really is a 50/50 option. In the end, Melbourne may want to bring some overlooked talent into its pre-season training program before ultimately making a decision. One name to watch out for if it does use this pick, is former Melbourne rookie Daniel Hughes, who has been training at the club since its pre-season began.

77 – FREMANTLE – MATTHEW MOODY
Brisbane Lions, WA, Medium midfielder, September 23, 1985, 187cm, 86kg
(Draft range: 56-not selected)

Moody has been training with Fremantle in the lead-up to the draft and the club is understood to be pleased with his progress. Similar to Melbourne, Freo might consider holding over this selection for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, but if it is already set on Moody, then there is a strong suggestion he will be drafted on Saturday.

78 – PORT ADELAIDE – PAUL CAHILL
Sturt, SA, Tall forward, August 19, 1990, 193.1cm, 80.7kg
(Draft range: 58-not selected)

Cahill has considerable talent and potential upside, but there are varying thoughts on where he sits overall. With this set to be Port Adelaide's last 'live' pick in this year's draft, Cahill will be right in contention if he hasn't been plucked beforehand. Some smoky types for Port Adelaide at No.78 include Wade Thompson and Jessie O'Brien. Recently delisted AFL players, Meyer (if available), Davenport and Chris Schmidt will also be considered.

79 – ESSENDON – KADE KLEMKE
Murray Bushrangers, NSW, Medium defender, July 15, 1990, 180.4cm, 77.1kg
(Draft range: 50-not selected)

Most recruiters believe Klemke will be drafted and he has also been linked with Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, which have combined total of six live picks. Geelong and Richmond are also believed to be admirers, as are the Bombers. He looms as a likely 50-plus pick and the Dons would be well pleased to obtain him with their final pick.

80 – CARLTON – ROBIN NAHAS
Port Melbourne, VIC, Small forward/midfielder, November 10, 1987, 174cm, 63kg
(Draft range: 65-not selected)

Nahas looms as a late pick after a fine year with Port Melbourne in the VFL. He has been closely linked with Carlton late in the draft, with the Blues looking to add some nip in attack. If Carlton overlooks him, otherwise expect him to become a rookie

81 – BRISBANE LIONS – NICK DAVIS
Sydney Swans, NSW, Small forward, March 30, 1980, 184cm, 83kg
(Draft range: 69-not selected)

It could be a case of third time lucky for Davis, who has been training with the Lions in the lead-up to the draft. A premiership player with the Swans in 2005, Davis has proven ability at the highest level – who could ever forget his snap in the dying stages of the '05 finals series against Geelong? His crumb and spark up forward would help create another avenue to goal, with much of the burden now falling to stars Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw.

82 – BRISBANE LIONS – PASS

With the Lions now believed to be the only club with any interest in reigniting Ben Cousins' AFL career, it is likely they will pass on their final selection and continue with their information-gathering on the West Coast great. St Kilda, which looked set to claim Cousins, pulled out of the running on Tuesday night. Still, if Cousins has nominated for this draft and the two parties are prepared to give it their best, don't be surprised if he is taken with the Lions' final pick.

83 – ST KILDA – NATHAN CARROLL
Melbourne, WA, Tall defender, October 20, 1980, 191cm, 91kg
(Draft range: No.74-not selected)

It's unlikely any other club will select Carroll, who like Davis could be about to join his third club (he was a Fremantle rookie before joining Melbourne). Carroll parted ways with Melbourne after the second list lodgment and although he was still contracted to the Demons, he severed his ties following some off-field incidents. His no-frills style of play, Carroll could offer the Saints some good service assisting the likes of Max Hudghton down back. Oft-maligned, many forget Carroll was one of the AFL's best performed full-backs in 2006. Expect Carroll to be St Kilda's final selection now, given it has pulled out of the Cousins race.

ROUND SEVEN

84 – PORT ADELAIDE – PASS

The Power is certain to pass on its final selection given it has targeted Josh Carr in the December NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft. Carr did not nominate for this draft, paving the way for a return to Alberton, where he was a premiership player in 2004, before crossing to Fremantle for four seasons.

85 – CARLTON – PASS

Like Port Adelaide, don't expect Carlton to use the last pick in this year's NAB AFL Draft, as it has former Demon Chris Johnson ready to become a Blue. Johnson didn't nominate for this meeting, meaning he is almost certain to join Carlton. The only twist could be if West Coast or Fremantle passes on their final selections, hoping to lure the Western Australian home. But Johnson has firmly indicated he wants to remain in Victoria and start his new life at Carlton.

Re: Burgatron 2008 - Who we are linked to in the draft

To be honest, i'm unsure how i'd feel if it panned out this way.

We need a tall, so Davis would be a good get. But i'm unsure if we need more 'medium defenders'.

Either KPP or pure midfielders for mine, but I have no idea about these kids.

we do have an abundance of midfielders but can ya really have to many great mids when we can use them like Hodgey.
Another medium defender cant hurt it will free up blokes like Birchell to play on the wing & in the middle in the future big call trying to figure out who goes where in the later stagers of the draft!

I guess, but why not just go for a tall midfielder then?

I'd rather a tall midfielder to play in the back-half, rather than a small defender - who although they might be good at spoiling and other defensive traits, aren't so flash skills wise.

Meh, again - what do I know?!

I just hope he's wrong.

Ash Smith sounds like a good type though. Hope we get him.

What the hell is a medium midfielder anyway? Someone who can play on the wing as well as in the centre square?

I'll be happy if they can get the agate, know how to kick and handpass it and can gut run without tripping over themselves. Any of those there?

Seriously though apart from the tall defender aren't we at the stage where we are topping up the list? I think we could do worse than look for guys who have good skills and are adaptable ie can play in more than one position. Or is that too much to ask?

The game is changing. Sides are loading up small quick forwards in the Rioli mold up and we need defenders to keep up. With Brown a good option up forward we could use some flexibilty so small defenders will be a good pick.

Well. We have Stokes and Whitecross who could fill those spots but maybe we could use more.

Let us see:

16. Davis - tall KP defender definately required

34. James Strauss - 185 cm medium defender ???

50. Rhys O'Keefe - 188 cm medium defender ???

63. Jordan Jones - 189cm tall (sic) defender ???

75. Danny Meyer ex Richmond midfielder

Seems very unbalanced to me. No rucks and no new midfielders.

Given that young midfielders generally start out playing HBF (eg Tuck, Birchall etc) or in defence like Whitecross at BHH, it seems really weird (a waste in fact) to be recruiting three new medium defenders.

Oh well it is only a hypothetical.

This is the man that I really want and I would even consider him at 16 ahead of Davis as it looks as though he may be snapped up before our second pick..

Here is some footage of him for those who have not seen him in action..

More impressive than Davis in my opinion..

I'm not too fazed with the Medium defender tag, not all Mids can be good med defenders, and quality med defenders can be very damaging.

Some that come to mind:

Urqhuart (NM) - Looks like being a very good player.
Pratt - we love to hate him, but he goes ok.
Milburn -
Mackie
Johncock - maybe small def

Even Birch

There are others, but it's off season and names aren't coming to me.

I think good med def's are very important, and a natural one can be better than a mid sent there because he can't get a run in the midfield.

Don't use Hodgie as an example of a mid playing back, as he's just a special player.

Who are our current "natural" med def's in waiting?
Tuck
?
I'm sure there are more, but it's knock off time.

Re: Burgatron 2008 - Who we are linked to in the draft

In my view an excellent draft for us. There are many players that are interchangeable but the types selected are just about right.

1st Round Tall - good Davis is one of these
2nd and 3rd Rounds - defenders / midfielders who are either quick (Strauss) or excellent ball uses (O'Keefe) or both in Strauss's case
4th Round - 3rd tall defender good - Jones is one and we need to be able to match defensively with others
5th Round - Meyer to piss Richmond off is a good choice

Agreed.

One can normally turn mdifielders not quite up to it into defenders and some forwards into midfielders, but generally, blokes that are defenders when young rarely develop into anything else.

What does everyone think of Swift at 16?? The guy is an absolute gun but is he worth the risk considering whats happened in the past with muston and dowler?

Probably not, but i'd love to see him at hawthorn.

I wouldn't be completely against it if he passed a medical. He did his ACL once, has had that fixed and then had cartilage or meniscus problems with the other knee, he didn't re-do his ACL. He's now pretty much back to full fitness, unlike Dowler and Muston who came to us injured, and managed 3rd in the vertical jump (72cm), 5th in the 20m sprint (2.89s) and 9th in the beep test (14.1) at draft camp.

Taking a punt like this is the only way to get really highly rated players with the late picks we'll (hopefully) have over the next few years. However I haven't heard us linked to him at all, which suggests either we aren't in any way interested in taking a risk with our only high pick, or we are chasing talls as many suspect (or wer're just playing our card close to our chest).

The more I think about it I think the draft I'd love us to have is Swift in the first round and Jayden Post in the second. Unfortunately I don't think either will be around at our picks. Someone will take Swift before us, and I don't think Post will make it past the Dogs.
