I was thinking about the cricket game. They have already gone from 5 days to 2 to 1 day versions. How about a 2-hour version to compete with the various footy codes.
My idea is very raw and I'm inviting you cricket experts to review it. It borrows heavily from gridiron and rugby in that there is a distinct offensive and defensive phase, but each team can have several offensive sessions.
How it works
A team goes in to bat and continues to bat as long as the following happens:
1) The team scores 4 runs per over
2) A batsman is not bowled out
In this offensive stage the runs do not count as score but a boundary or a hit out count for 4 and 6 respectively.
As soon as the offense ends the other team takes the offense and can score.
The defensive team scores a 12 if they take a wicket.
If a player has a 6 or 12 scored against them then they cannot bowl or bat again for 20 minutes. This will ensure that a team has a few batsmen and bowlers.
Some rules about changing batsmen and bowlers in mid offens need to be structured, but it should allow the captain to change (even the batsmen) in mid-session
Some form of timekeeping (and timewasting rules need to be formulated) but there might be something in it.
