He's played 6 games for Peel, predominantly up forward.

Rd 1 v Subi: 14D, 7M, 2T, 1HO, 1.1
Rd 2 v EF: 10D, 2M, 1T, 4.0
Rd 3 v SD: 13D, 7M, 2T, 0.1
Rd 4 v EP: 12D, 8M, 2T, 0.0
Rd 5: bye
Rd 6 v C: 22D, 12M, 1T, 3HO, 1.1
Rd 7 v P: 25D, 12M, 1T, 4HO, 1.1

He hasn't had more than 2 tackles per game - maybe they are looking at him to improve his defensive pressure in the forward half... and he definitely looks to be no more than a pinch-hitter in the ruck.

But the last couple of weeks he has certainly improved his output in terms of getting his hands on the ball, and providing a marking target. An extra goal per game would certainly help his case too.

Oh FFS... He is a forward. He kicks goals. Personally I don't think he's the answer and won't make it but I truly hope I'm proven wrong. However if we're still having tackles as a pre-requisite ahead of goal kicking then our picking the 22 strategy is stuffed. Bennell is a downhill skiier (as in he doesn't defend anywhere near as much as others, still amazing though) however are we going to not pick him because he only has minimal defensive pressure?

I think the main upside of slotting in Tanner or Apeness is we then have three talls up forward. Takes the pressure off Pav, Tabs and Mayne. I'm not sure why Griffin/Clarke haven't been doing that already when resting forward mind you? They were last year and it made a huge difference. Yarran and Bennell both weren't renowned for defensive effort before they came to us but I'd be pretty surprised if Ross and the coaches weren't demanding more from them in that regard. Yarran was apparently pretty good defensively when he was on the ground in the Peel game last week. We'll be fine with both them, once Yarran has the fitness to play 4 quarters he'll get his opportunity.

Did you read the recent article on Taberner on the Freo website?

..........
“For me it’s about bringing great effort every week and impacting the games not just through the aerial contests,” Taberner said.

“Especially defensively and finding ways to lay more tackles, which is important.”
..........

Our biggest problem in out team is our lack of goal scorers and all our kids still seemed more preoccupied with tackling. Would love one of our kids to come out and say I'm going to win the Coleman medal this year. Pressure is important but a forwards primary focus should always be kicking goals.

Who does he replace?

I want Tanner in, a forward line with Tabs and Tanner, with Pav as the third tall. Mayne out to find some form in the WAFL. Also Zac C out with Tanner to provide a chop out in the ruck. Zac C can be replaced by a runner such as Ed Langdon.

If there were Tabs, Smith and Pav in the forward line with Griff as the resting ruck, they'd damn well want to be marking everything and kicking straight because any defense in the league would be walking the ball out of that backline.

Keep Mayne, Walters to spend time in the midfield like last weekend. Mayne will thrive in a decent forward line.

Griff has been terrible for a while now though . Zac C staying in with an extra runner maybe but that wouldn't fill you with confidence either.:(

I guess I don't see the point of playing 2 rucks in horrible form when they each have less than 60% game time and thus push extra game time on to the runners.

Straight from the Ross Lyon gospel,.......I fear this is how it will always be.

Yep, don't mind this. Clarke plays his best footy as #1 ruck.

If he ever pulls his finger out where he'll succeed is as lead ruck, fo sho. We'll lose a bit in the ruck when Clarke is resting on the bench/fwd but overall Smith would give us a lot more than Griff right now. He can be the fwd/ruck they were probably hoping Hannath would be.

I was against this very strongly earlier in the week & strong against upgrading a rookie ATM, but I must say the more I've thought about it the more I like it.

Starting to agree with Tanner in for Griffin

The big Mummy is daunting for both our rucks no doubt. Griff would compete hard but without a leap I think he would be soundly beaten. Clarke seems a better option just because he could out leap him and out run him, the only problem being if Mummy is in one of his moods he may make Clarke cry from the first bounce!

Rd 6 v C: 22D, 12M, 1T, 3HO, 1.1
Rd 7 v P: 25D, 12M, 1T, 4HO, 1.1

So.. he gets the possies of a midfielder, has a bag of 4 and the marking stats of a +1 defender... and he's 196cm

I'm I missing something?

If Fremantle play Tanner in the forward line be prepared for a lot of tears to be flowing and a lot of hair floating to the ground . Tanner goes missing for large periods in games . He doesn't read the ball in the air and the coaches at every break in the Peel games get stuck into him about his positioning on the ground . When he gets it right he can have an impact BUT his decision making with ball in hand is very poor . GOOD LUCK . Shaw from GWS and Gibson from Hawthorn would have a field day playing on him .
