Opinion It's Time For The Whole Draft System To Be Reviewed & Repaired

I think most people would agree with this article, the academy rort has gone way to far now.

Time to strip it back and make it as even as possible for all clubs in the southern states.

And Bartel is right in that academies are necessary for the time being in QLD & NSW whilst the code grows and expands.
So let me get this straight. The draft is compromised because of the Northern academy rorts.
It needs to be stripped back and make it more even for the Southern states.
But, the academies have to stay to grow the game.

Great post, would read again.

The rort is in Victoria. The raping and pillaging of GCS & GWS from the Vic clubs has forced the situation upon themselves.
I'm just envious of the northern states that we don't have a similar thing set up in SA and keep our local talent here rather than paying overs in trades to get them home later.

There's no reason for a national draft, even disregarding academies and father-sons. It's an american concept which doesn't translate at all to australia due to completely different demographics.

I have no issue with the draft as long as clubs can move players easily. Same as the NBA, Player is contracted they get traded they either stay at that club or leave at the end of the season.

Academies are growing the game which is a huge positive... Time to take away the power teh player agents have and treat them like professionals. They choose to play AFL then that means anywhere in the country for the contracts they sign

The thing is if Ashcroft, daicos ect went to another club they would have asked to be traded by now, the only benefit is they would have got value from them in draft picks better than the bidding system

You don't seem to be quite so dogmatic about the father/son rule? Wonder why?

How about this. If you want an even competition, then move the grand final away from the MCG and travel interstate every 2 weeks. If not, piss off. You have your rort, we have ours.
What rort is that mate? There are 4 Victorian clubs who aren’t MCG tenants and get ****ed over at every opportunity.

Maybe you can amalgamate with Fitzroy and come back to Victoria

You can't control which players have sons and which have daughters plus the club(s) involved with the player now has to bid for them so they don't get a gun youngster for an early 5th rounder like the old days.

I feel that the F/S rule is the least of our problems unless there is something else I'm missing and if there is, I'd appreciate you alerting me to it.

Where does your wife go for intelligent conversation ??

Which demographics specifically make drafting unsuitable for Australia?

Oh it's such a pain travelling up the road another 2km from Marvel or 50km from Geelong. So much more excruciating than a cross-country flight.

I've been saying for awhile that the WA & SA clubs should have first dibs on local talent it's not 1985 with loaded talent pools anymore, and seriously things like Victorian clubs being able to take metro indigenous lads from their academies while not allowing it for SA & WA clubs is absurd.
I agree. The best NSW and Qld kids are almost guaranteed to play in their home state.
A Victorian kid has a 55% chance of staying at home an playing for a Vic club.
An SA or WA kids only has an 11% chance of playing in his home state.
There needs to be a correction of that. SA and WA kids have to bare the brunt of homesickness.

If your saying…
Academy’s are important to attract prospective players from the junior talent pool.
I understand and agree.

I dont agree that it’s important to feed talent to northern clubs…or any club for that matter.

Which demographics specifically make drafting unsuitable for Australia?
The lack of major cities compared to America, the barassi line, the quantity of melbournian teams and victorian drafted players. Not to mention the drafted players are high school kids susceptible to homesickness
