This argument is ridiculous.

Look at the 2007 Draft

Pick # 10 Patrick Dangerfield
Pick # 27 Andy Otten
Pick # 30 Jarrhan Jacky
Pick # 38 Myke Cook

If our sanctions had applied in that year, we'd have had Jarrhan Jacky and Myke Cook. Where exactly do you think we'd be if we didn't have Patrick Dangerfield right now? These are the sorts of players you miss out on be being excluded from the first round of the draft.

Our list in 05/06 was at a very different stage of progression to where it is now. Hell, Tyson Edwards was a second tier midfielder for us back then, and he was a gun.
No, the argument is very fair. Losing first round picks in 2012 and 2013 doesn't really affect our premiership aspirations in 2014 and 2015. Other than the likes of Joel Selwood and Harry Taylor, very few players come in and have a real impact in their first couple of years on a premiership side, regardless of how good they are. And those that do are generally the more mature-aged role players who are usually taken with late picks anyway.

It is the window beyond that, in 2016 and beyond, where the effects of the draft pick penalties will begin to be felt. That's when the players we would have selected will be actually hitting their straps and making a positive influence on somebody else's team rather than ours. And that hurts bigtime.

I'm not happy that Trigg is back, not in the slightest. But given that he is back, and that it seems nothing we do or say has an influence on that decision (though kicking and screaming now may give the club cause to consider fan opinion more seriously for future decision, so it's not pointless), I'm just hoping the club can make the best of it - and that this kind of awful incident never occurs again.

What if we had wanted to trade our picks for an established, quality player?

In that case the loss of picks absolutely do hurt us in the short term.

Yes, in that case they do.

I don't remember - were there any quality, established players traded around last year? I wonder who we could have tried our hand at?

Rioli was probably the last one. I might have missed something - why is it relevant whether our misdeeds hurt us immediately or only in the future?

As for the "good teams have picked spuds before" argument, there's no guarantee that early draft picks make good players. To take it a step further, sound administration of the club can never guarantee success, nor is it their job to. Their job is to give the football department the best possible chance of success.

Does the loss of draft picks preclude us from winning a flag in the next few years? Of course not. But we are not giving ourselves an even break in a competition that is already arguably stacked against us.

Members email alert

Dear member,

It's great to be back, and I'm genuinely very grateful to be back.

On return, the obvious thing to do is to say 'look forward, not back' - on a situation that hurt many people, and the Club generally.

But a very quick reflection (here) is important, if only to pledge that such a thing will never happen again to our Club. It's obvious that it's been a costly mistake, and in the time that I've had to reflect on it, I have an enormous sense of obligation to get it behind us, by working as hard as I possibly can to have us as the most united and successful Club we all want it to be.

I've been humbled by the generous support of so many people connected with our Club, and I sincerely thank Rob Chapman for filling the breach, and the Board, staff and playing side for their strong encouragement and backing, as well as the load they've had to carry.

It's immediately obvious that the Club has been busy, with a lot of positive progress on the key areas of licenses, Adelaide Oval, and the establishment of a reserves team - and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into those issues.

And finally to all those members and supporters who've sent through their best wishes, again - thank you.

I return to work absolutely determined to repay that faith and support.

Good God, just got Mr Triggs email. I couldn't take it, have sent the Club an email requesting that I no longer want to receive these emails any more. I also asked that my displeasure that he has returned be passed on to him.

If he is receiving "best wishes" I hope they pass the opposite ones through too. I am so disillusioned with the club at the moment.

That's wrong. First rounds picks are currency - we could have used them as intended to draft young players or (if we thought we were in a premiership window) to trade them for more established players that would have made a higher contribution in the short term.

I can't remember off the top of my head.

All the talk was about Cloke and Boak at the time but there were a few including Sydney's Kennedy who hadn't been re-signed at that stage.

I just had a very interesting phone call from a mate. He said (intimated) that Matthew Rendell was the person whom leaked the Tippett secret contract to the media and this was in fact the reason he was fired.

The racial stuff last year was just a cover.
What'd Rendell have to gain by leaking it?
I think it would be less a scheming by Rendell, more so just being the honest blabber mouth that he always has been.

Eg on 5AA he blurted out that they knew for two years that Tippett was leaving and that was why they'd recruited Jenkins. Sort of blew the AFC company line we were trotting out.

Anyway, some sickening answers in this morning's interview. In particular that we (the fans) aren't going to get any honest answers as to what went on, as it serves no benefit for the football club to do so.

And again, there were some "other things" that Rendell was sacked for that the public won't be privy to out of respect for Rendell. Yeah, right. Are Collingwood aware of these "other things" that made his position untenable I wonder?

Ultimately, despite all the waffle about working hard and repaying the faith, all that was really said by Trigg in the interview was that we'll do whatever it takes to keep the transparency and outside scrutiny to a minimum. He talks about re-building the trust... by keeping everything in house. That's not how it works.

Oh, and who paid for him to go jet-setting around following the All Blacks and all those overseas events?
