In the heat of the moment he made a bad split second decision. Copped the full brunt of the suspension without complaint.

Its never too late to apologise and not once did he use that apology to try and spin to achieve a lighter sentence. All credit to him for fessing up to his mistake and promising to moderate his aggeression

I am completely opposed to a red card system. It would need to be saved for deliberate behind the play "Jimmy O'Dea on Greening" or "Leigh Matthews on Bruns" or "Lockett on Caven" type king hits, not in play errors of judgement where the umpire has to make a call on the spot and will invariably get it wrong.

And those incidents simply dont happen any more.

I'm all for the send-off for incidents like this.

The "Jonas made a wrong split second call" is wearing thin.

Contact sports can be played in a fair manner, I enjoy a good bump or shepherd, but this was simply a dog-act of the highest order. It has no place in the game today, and I don't buy that it is too hard to enforce in a fair manner. If the feet are off the ground, the elbow has left the body, the contact is head-high, and the player is unconscious, take a f***ng walk.

Let the tribunal deal with fairness in the cool light of day not the umpire in the heat of the battle. Jonas got his fair whack (pun intended). When something is as "in-play" as that it would be patently unfair to put pressure on umpires to make a call on a send off. In real time they would have no clue as to whether or not it was intentional.

I'd argue the Maxwell one was nothing like the two above.
The ball was in dispute for starters, Maxwell effected a legitimate (at the time) bump which did unfortunately cause a lot of physical damage.
There is no way on earth Maxwell would have got off the suspension on appeal if he intended injury.
That's not to say it would be tolerated now or to diminish the effect it had on McGinnity.
Ruined mcginnitys career. Kid was headed for stardom.

Nah joking

Don't think the subtle troll goes unnoticed. Maxwell was cleared.

Maybe you should've run with Headland and Selwood instead... Oh but that's right, Selwood kinda brought that one on himself.
It actually wasn't a troll, or wasn't meant to be... Maxwell was mentioned post #6 just before mine, I was just replying to the thread? :drunk:

Guess I'll just head on back to my board where I'm welcome.

Its too late to apologize lol you sound like a female.... *braces myself*

All good. Tbh as I said it was just a song that was on the radio and I figured it worked haha. Isn't it a typical paper headline? I copped a bit of flack from non-Pie supporters about it, but I'm masculine enough to take it :p

Stop the wounded foal act, it definitely came across as a troll and was contextualised completely different to post 8.

The incident in question was cleared at the tribunal and so given it was deemed legal I don't understand why you would even be drawing reference to it.

Troll or no troll he made a great case base for NOT implementing a red card. Maxwells action was legal and in play. Remotely comparing it to the Lockett/Caven incident is exactly why the red card should never come in. Mistakes WILL be made.

...Bit of an overreaction, as usual from you Ed - when was the last time something like this ever happened? Maxwell in 2009? Barry Hall in 2008? System is fine as it is.
They were the same examples used 'On the Couch' Monday night from memory, anyway...

In my 8 years on this forum, I've rarely ventured onto other boards. Now I know why. I honestly can't be bothered. I'm not an internet warrior, troll, etc etc more of a casual observer. FWIW we were invited here by Syphoncom after he posted a link to his article on our board, which was a good read.

And agree with the post above, red cards cannot be given to umpires.

Given the reaction I was ready to crucify. I think cheap shots have no place in modern footy.

But watching it was more careless and wreck-less and stupid than pure thuggery like the Hall hit on Staker. Granted it was worthy of 6 weeks at least but ultimately should be left at that.

Venture again Goldfish.:thumbsu: It's part of the fun when others visit with good intentions/banter.

The mods on this board are also welcoming.

Never to late to apologise.
I personally don't have any hate for the perpetrator. It's footy and it's a split second decision.
He got that decision wrong, but you could see from his body language on the ground he knew he had ****ed up.
Has taken his punishment and we all move on.

Tbh this is friendliest board here. Just saying hello on some others gets a card.

Shirley you can't be serious. You got a very fair hearing.

You are welcome to return any time and complain about the unjust world the Eagles live in

re Jonas. he made a split second mistake. he now misses more than a month of footy. case closed.
Yep this. I've never considered him to be a dirty player. I certainly can't remember anything he's ever done. He made a blue. A pretty big one and now he gets to do the time. Everyone will move on.

What do you guys think of Jonas claiming he was "bracing for impact" at the tribunal?

Does it take a bit of the shine off the sincerity of his apology?
Not really. I'd rate the sincerity of his apology in terms of what he said to Andrew Gaff, not the tribunal. I don't think anything less of him for trying his best to reduce the severity of his penalty at the tribunal. Players have always done that

i keep hearing from the red card lovers that it stops incidents.... well the last time i looked they still give red cards in the round ball game..... so it hasnt stopped much..

The other reason is that it punishes the team when it happens.....when i think back over the years, I remember a lot of times when the team that did the head hunting lost the game. Gavin Brown comes to mind. Mark Yates from Geelong is another that comes to mind. I'm sure people will come up with something to refute that, but ehhh.

I cant help but make a comment about the people complaining about the incident in the West this week. Some joker got on the radio and said that the coach should have "taken Jonas from the ground". Evidently they do that in pommieland when a player gets a little heated.....geez....I wish they didnt sell Eagles memberships to 10 pound tourists.... there's a million of em over here and they are always treating the Australian game like a round ball thing. One example....the Darby or derby or whatever.....I always thought it was a horse race until i got here. Another example... deliberate out of bounds.... they invented it at Subi oval 20 years ago....everything that went out of bounds from an opposition player has been deliberate for 20 years. Can someone get the Queen to call em back?
