Commander Hinkley:
"Lord Thomas, this is an unexpected pleasure. We are honoured by your presence."

Lord Thomas: "You may dispense with the pleasantries, commander. I'm here to put you back on schedule."

Commander Hinkley:
"I assure you Lord Thomas, my players are working as hard as they can."

Lord Thomas: "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them."

Commander Hinkley: "I tell you this club will make top four as planned."

Lord Thomas: "The BigFooty Port Forum does not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation."

Commander Hinkley: "But they ask the impossible. I need more run."

Lord Thomas: "Then perhaps you can tell them that by dropping that spud Lobbe for our next JLT game."

Commander Hinkley: "The Port Forum is coming to Noarlunga?"

Lord Thomas: "That is correct, commander. And they are most displeased with your apparent lack of progress."

Commander Hinkley: "We shall double our efforts."

Lord Thomas: "I hope so, commander, for your sake. The Port Forum is not as forgiving as I am."

According to Jonas, last pre-season we did lots of match simulation and little skills training. So this year we changed it up and did lots of skills training and minimal match simulation. WTF.

We had to spend the majority of time on our skills. They were terrible last year as per the stats I put up in the Can't Kick can't play football thread. In my Op I said we should concentrate on our kicking skills and improve our decision making. We finished 18th for kicking efficiency, 18th for clangers ie the most per game, and when looking at differentials we were bottom 5 or 6 for contested possessions, uncontested possessions and clearances. From what I've seen so far in the BLT we wasted our time.
looks that way but lets hope when the best team is available and some of our best players actually are awake and give a shit they show the benefit of the extra work.

Yes, however we now seem to be going into the season unprepared for the actual match play and game plan.

I totally agree our skills are below par but our skills are definitely significantly affected by a combination of not having a reliable plan to move the ball and as such having to think a lot harder about where to kick, and also spending the whole game gassed because we're chasing opponents and trying to win the ball back.

Our skills looked much better in 2014 when our players were running into space and everybody knew that. Jamming it on the boot was usually to our advantage. That space is gone.

Match simulation should double as a skills session, they aren't exclusive! Bugger me...

In a lower tier competition, sure, they are quite similar (however I would still argue that they both serve different and equally valuable purposes).

However skills sessions in AFL are able to be recorded and monitored much easier than match sim. This way all kicks, marks, etc. can be taped and assessed post drill with the players to help them improve. They will still have match sim footage, but it wouldn't have the clarity of vision that would allow them to fine tune kicking actions etc.

exactly , the one thing we all said in 2014 especially when we went from top to out of the 4 was our skills really let us down too often , the final series really had skewed our memories of our major team problems through out that year

So they spent summer working on skills? Well, it is clear our coaches don't do skills coaching well.

Nor tacking coaching. ****, I would be happy with a pick the ******* ball up cleanly coaching .

Ports don't coach real good.

So it looks like Wingard wasn't voted into the top 50 players by his peers (unless they have him above Robbie in the top 15, which is highly doubtful).

We would look like a much better side if Chad starts to play at his best. His footy in 2016 was very vanilla flavoured and his first two outings this year have been bland also - bordering on chocolate coloured poo against Richmond.

We need him to be a superstar again.

He seagulled pretty much all of 2016. Still kicked nearly 40 goals without really trying. Why isn't he isolated? I'd back him to win 7 out of 10 one on ones.

It's almost as if each one of our opponents went over our 2014 gamefilm with a forensic bent and worked out how to nullify our plan-A.

And we don't have a plan-B. Let alone C, D, E.

And what have we done to adapt? The überpress? 2.5 years of shoulder shrugging?

I think skills and playing well comes from confidence. I'd say we've gone into confused land the last two years, and we still seem confused. Bricks with ears....

Because teams wouldn't let him be one on one and we would be back to bombing it long to a 2 on 1 Brett Ebert style.

I cant handle another year like the past, and if we lose three games by more than 50 points this year it will be my sign to jump on board the train of "i've lost my faith in Ken Hinkley" express.

I love the Ken, I dont want to see him go.... I would trade more players before letting go of Ken.
