Do spokes-people from other clubs ever talk about problems adapting to a new game plan, and how they may go backwards before making progress..

Seems to be a Port Adelaide thing sadly.

Everybody has seen the contrast between our team and the rest in the AFL, with some seeing similar in many games in the SANFL as well, and it doesn't look like we are achieving nor building towards success. I worry about young recruits showing talent and skills and then watching it wither away like it has with the experienced players. I judge that Hinkley is responsible for skills and the manner by which we play so my faith in him has waned.

I do not believe Hinkley ever had the right comprehension of what defines "Port Adelaide Footy". I'm so relieved that they stopped referring to it midway through last season. In our days of winning premierships I don't remember our coach and club blowing their own trumpets on every aspect of the club, the talking was done in the finals on the field.

Anyway, I want to know what others feel about Hinkley's judgement of Jonas because his judgement of Jonas would have resulted in Jonas receiving a 3 year deal. What are people's thoughts about Hinkley's judgement of Jonas?
Good post. :thumbsu:

Re Ken's judgement of Jonas, it is difficult to comprehend how a bloke who was ( apparently ) shopped around for no takers in last year's trade period, could then be given a 3 year contract. o_O
I heard that TJ may have even asked to be traded, which would make that 3 year deal even more perplexing, and I would have thought 1 year with a performance clause would have been a better option.

Further to Ken's opinion ( faith? ) of Jonas, and a number of other senior players.
His career as an AFL senior coach will probably live or die by that faith, and at this stage the signs aren't particularly good that said players have his back.

I doubt TJ will ever get better conditions for his style of play than at Noarlunga today, so let's hope he can turn the clock back to 2014, because in football terms that season is fast becoming ancient history.

Haha our misgivings, angsts, uncertainties on Kenny, we/he has nothing on Geelong fans and Chris Scott. Was looking for something on long term assistant coach David Wheadon and found a thread on the Geelong board that was started in April 2015 has moved onto part II thread, and is at almost 850 pages combined. I'm sure there were other Scott threads before this big one.

Heard Jono Brown on Double Crow yesterday saying that he had spoken to some umpires and that last year they said that Port trained their players harder than anybody else in the preseason by a long long way. He reckons that part of the reason Port look much better is that he suspects the training has been backed off a lot. Was this part of Burgess' plan all along or (remember the club always said it was a 4-5 year programme before we peaked) or did he genuinely get it wrong and the club made a conscious decision to reign him in?

Because a list needs to contain cheap and servicable players. After receiving no interest Jonas's contract will be relatively cheap to his out put.

Haha why are umpires a source for knowing about how hard Port trained in the 2015/16 preseason?? Given their ability to understand and apply the rules of the game I have to wonder about their ability to understand Port's fitness regime.

Yeah I know I kind of thought "WTF would the umps know" but that is what he said.

TJ has been more than serviceable in the 2 rounds played so far, if he can keep up that standard I may have to revise my thinking. ;)

I'm not saying the umpires know what they're talking about but Brown said they were basing it on their involvement with match simulation over the preseason.

Don't the umpires drop in to clubs to practice their umpiring though? like take scratch matches and stuff with each years new interpretations and get some fitness themselves?

Dear god, that image is just made for captioning.
I was watching the Port vs Hawthorn 2010 Round 18 game (found it randomly at home on DVD).

It was just after Williams sacking, Dwayne Russell went through the 3 favourites for the job at that point. It was something like Primus 2/1, Sanderson 4/1, Craig Bradley 6/1. Sheesh.

Yes they go do scratch matches and go to explain interpretations but I have never heard of them doing any training with the club(s).

But how would the umps know that? As for a plan or reigning in..a bit of both I wonder.
