i think a good change to remove this occurring again is that the player in question needs to pick say 3 clubs of choice. GC are a disaster but at least allowing others to negotiate means this isn't just a total ream job for a single club.

picking 1 and only doing the deal with one is stinky in this situation.

can't fault geelong for it though. 100% legal and well done to them.
The
2.2m - 1.6m = 600k

He gets his 1.6M + 2 extra years at 300k guaranteed. That's just quick maths. Alternatively he gets his 1.6 over two years at the Gold Coast by staying and likely gets delisted if he stays stuck in their reserves. The kid and his manager aren't stupid, regardless of what the conspiracy theorists here might try and suggest.
more an AFL issue than the cats, suns or Bowes.
though you'd have to wonder how much Hocking knew of this coming and had the inside track. I hope a lot, cos his successor at the AFL is now our coach :)

Sadly i think the AFL will fix this before any other club gets to take advantage of it.
Imagine the pick trade can only be lop-sided if the salary component doesn't change for the remaining contract (i.e. Geelong take on 800 a year for 2, then whatever is negotiated for the next 2)
It’s absolutely a suns issue when there asking for and getting multiple priority picks then going and doing horrible deals like this you don’t see a problem there for the suns

Can anyone confirm that the below info is correct? If so then I retract any criticism I made about the deal. Honestly them getting Pick 7 is just good business on their end but it was previously implied Bowes turned a 2 year 1.5m contract into a 4 year 1.5m contract (effectively playing for free for 2 years). The playing for free was in reality the biggest issue with the trade but that may not be true if the below is accurate

Jack Bowes was never going to play years 3 and 4 for free. That's common sense.

would be interesting to know what the AFL would have done if they'd been able to predict the Suns sending 2/3 compo picks out the door for unders that haven't served them at all & were gonna have to shove an academy kid out the door with a top 10 pick to go with it cos they don't want to pay him.

I understand salary dumps but The afl have opened a huge can of worms allowing this to go through due to competitive balance it way to one sided the suns are getting screwed if it was the nba the trade would have got vetoed

You've got it wrong, mate. The NBA has never vetoed a trade. Not even a single time, they don't have the power to.
It happens in the nba when the lakers Chris Paul trade got over ruled due to being to one sided. And the afl does have an option to overrule trades the one at kilda did with hawthorn years ago almost got vetoed. The suns salary cap must be completely screwed is the only reason I can see for not happening

David Stern overruled that trade as the owner of the Hornets, which he was, in an interim capacity at the time, not on behalf of the NBA.

So, no. This trade would not have been vetoed in the US. There's nothing wrong with it.

North? Essendon? Hawthorn?

All have plenty of cap space and a young list with no issues paying the full value of his contract as-is within the salary cap.
Why would any club take him on that wage? He’s no Dangerfield or Cameron.

We don't get NGA like some clubs have..

How about your club?
Tw NGAs in the 2nd round compared to being gifted pick 7. That sounds like we have had such a leg up. Geelong definetelydeserved pick 7 for taking Bowes off the Suns hands. Geelongs fans can argue the pint all they want but the AFL help your team out more than any oter team in the AFL. NO OTHER TEAM PLAY ON THE GROUND THEY TRAIN ON.

Wait I thought the hive mind here said Geelong was only interested in pick 7 and not Jack?

It is insulting to pretend that Geelong have actually been after Jack Bowes for ages. If they were, GC wouldn't be throwing Pick 7 at them to take him.

Even Geelong supporters should admit that this deal is woeful, and the AFL should have not let it go through. No one is blaming Geelong for taking the golden ticket they were handed. We all would have. But at least have the decency to admit that it is a ridiculously unfair deal. There is not a club in the land that wouldn't have taken Pick 7 and Jack Bowes for $550,000 a year x4 in the salary cap. It's outrageously uneven.

Please don't be disingenuous for cheap troll thrills.

Yeh it’s make absolutely no sense why the cats get to spread the contract, otherwise why wouldn’t GC have just done it?

It also deprives Bowes of potential future earnings after the two years.

This is all very dodgy and definitely an underhanded leg up to the cats.

Because the player has to agree to spread it.

What incentive is there to pick up 1.6m in wages for a bloke playing in the twos?

I think Geelong would have made a play regardless. The GC came along with the golden goose..

Because clubs need to make the (overly high) minimum salary cap floor of 95%.

So they either frontload the s**t out of their players contracts, which only works for 1-2 years, totally overpay their own players, which then *s the salary cap, or, bring in a guy like Bowes as a salary dump.

It's really not that complicated, much as Geelong supporters try to pretend it's some kind of generous thing they're doing.

Don’t be cynical, I heard that during the Grand Final, Dangerfield called Jack Bowes on the bench to ask if he wants to join him on Sunday for a game of lawn bowls

If Geelong want to play at GMHBA stadium then to be equal Saibts should be able to host games at Moorabbin or Tigers at punt Road even Docker at Cockburn. AFL stance of equality is a joke and Geelong have been aided heavily by the AFL and not one single supporter will concede that is the case. Not blaming Geelong but the AFL who allow this to continue to happen.

Nothing said about the teams that get to over 15 games at their home ground or every club that gets 11. We get 9.

If teams were into fairness they all would agree to play at GMHBA rather than refuse to.

We don't get to refuse playing at someone else's home ground.

Who's stopping those teams from doing that? Didn't you all gleefully take the $$$ and migrate to shared stadiums?

Yep - but he gets 4 years guaranteed in the system, 2 extra years to earn VFL/AFL match payments on top of his contract.
Bowes and his manager take that every day of the week.
Geelong get a guy who looks like a genuine inside prospect, and pick 7.

Gold Coast are, well, um.....

We clawed on to our home ground when all and sundry were trying to move us to Docklands.

You had the chance to do the same.

Stop being a flog with the Geelong comment. No club in the land would pay that contract just for him. If clubs had that much spare cash they don’t buy him, they go get a star that’s out of contract. Simples mate, no way you spend 100k on a barina when you can get a Mercedes’ for the same money.
