It has all the hallmarks of just positioning before luring a Key Forward next year - King, maybe?
Move on a couple of older guys, bring in a young fella for minimum chips and position yourself for the big trade (or trades).

Buller is basically a pre season draft selection. Hes a free hit. The club took the free hit after moving on cox and checkers and potentially plugging a hole in the void between those and west, Steene etc.

If he works out great, if not it cost us nothing but a list spot.

The reporting on this has been pretty crazy to me. A fringe player being dropped is not news
Well was that not many other Forwards have not Offered Much More

Good Point Buller is the Middle of the Membery/McStay to the Wests/McCarthy/Howes

I cant help but wonder what Buller would've done last night given the supply our forwards had compared to the first two weeks. I feel like he would've given us more than McStay did!

I'm not ready to write him off. He had a really good game in the vfl last night too!

Daicos, Josh was selected in the draft late. No one selected him until our last pick. He was slow to develop. Applying the stated spud theory we should not have waited for Josh to change his spots. The above mentioned spud was selected by the club at low cost because of his ability. The club will correctly persist.
Have we tried covering him with butter and salt?

And he's second ruck depth. If either of the rucks are out - he's likely to get a call up. Smit still likes miles off.

Not Sold Smit will ever be AFL Ready

Plus whilst Steene has benefitted from the rule change, he's likely to have had the opposite. His selling point was that he's becoming a huge brute of a man.

Smit been more a KPD but yeah he is not Skinny

Smit only chance is making it as a backman

I would give him a taste in afl to learn at some point

Then 1 more year contract

2027 make or break

The reality is Smit won't make it at any position. Can't do a whole lot in the vfl. Is only 200cm as a ruckmen. Rules only disfavour him. Gets the flick by the end of the year.

Was really good Friday especially in the first quarter and in terrible conditions too. Played a fare portion in ruck and then floated forward, is a good player when the ball hits the ground. I think FLY will look to rotate him in and out with Steene. Hands were good in poor condition.....I think it's one of those situations again where it will take a little time to gel with teammates.

watching him in the VFL, was pretty disappointing to see Teakle being a far better mark than he is
wont be a forward of any value unless he starts clunking a few

on a side note, i shuddered watching Whitlock ( port ) and Shanahan ( WC ) taking contested marks on the weekend
gave up early pick for Houston in that draft, could have had either

was bad enough over looking Logan Morris in an earlier draft

We wouldn't have taken either of those players taken in the 30s with an 'early pick' though, would we?

We don’t know how we Picked IF we did not trade them

Knowing us we would have taken the one who can't get games for North :D
i think the emphasis was on Jack and not Matt, but i know what you mean
the fact he could play both ends in his junior day reminds me of the King twins, they rated the forward higher in both instances, yet the one that was proven at both ends of the ground have so far seemed to be the better talent

To my eye, Buller is low on natural forward instincts and X-factor but high on commitment and physicality.

I doubt Buller makes it as an AFL key forward but he seems a strong candidate to be turned into a key defender, playing a clearly-defined role in our well-structured backline system.

I don’t want to say it because I think he’ll get better as the season goes on and kick a few for us. Some of his contest work resulted in goals (McStay and Steele)…

…but I just finished the replay and he showed some traits that makes me think he’d be a good defender.
Flagged it at the start of March.

I'm still not giving up on him becoming a valuable forward option for us, though I think he has the attributes to become a reliable defender. For his lack of marks taken in the first two rounds, he didn't get out marked or beaten in many (if any) contests. Competes really well.

Don't know about that. I think forwards can get away with being a really strong competitor who brings it to ground. Defenders have to be really consistent over head.

He and Big Bad Billy could be long lost brothers, so there could be something in that.

I don't think he and McStay should play together, they seem to just get in each other's way.
