Agree. I feel it could backfire very quickly. Hopefully I’m wrong and Hewett / Cerra can hold their bodies together.

Realistically Carroll was either the sub or was subbed out in pretty much every game that he played last year and was mainly played due to injuries to Cerra or Walsh.

Our midfield basically loses Kennedy and back up in Carroll to be replaced by Cooper Lord (who looked the goods in limited starts) pick 3 and Ben Camporeale with Sam Docherty to primarily to play wing/mid after missing all of this year.

If Cerra and Walsh are injury free we are clearly better off and it allows us to refresh a midfield that either dominated or was dominated last year. The bigger mistake would have been to assume that our midfield that couldn't get the job done this year would somehow be able to next year .

He's an AFL footballer, he should look great at training.

That 'good look' didn't translate on-field at Carlton to any great effect. Time will tell whether it does at St Kilda, but given what I've seen over 4 years I am skeptical.

Brisbane didn't rate Jack Crisp much either

Same age as Carroll when he was traded as steak knives in the Beams deal

Similar height-weight at age 21 and both left footers

Crisp - 3 years & 18 games for Brions for 242 possessions, 61 marks, 10 goals, 24 clearances, 8 goal assists

Carroll - 3 years & 21 games for Carlton for 220 possessions, 59 marks, 5 goals, 27 clearances, 12 goal assists

Both fringe midfielders in those first 3 years

Very comparable

Strange comparison.

Not seeing too many similarities between Crisp and Carroll as footballers.

But yes, that’s certainly one example of a young player who turned his career around.

There are other examples too; just as there are many examples of younger players who couldn’t.

Carroll may make it, he may not. I’ll be stunned if he develops into half the player Crisp has been.

You are blinded by the Crisp as you know him now .... not the Crisp back in 2014

Crisp was a fringe mid back then and behind Rockliff Hanley Zorko Adcock & Redden (for awhile)

Carroll is a fringe mid behind Cripps Walsh Cerra & Hewett (better midfield?) .... he has also played numerous games as a sub (maybe up to 6 or 7 this year) coming on late so invariably his disposal count could have been higher than Crisp's for the similar amount of games .... fairly certain Crisp only ever played full games

They are different types of players with different strengths.

Both have an inside and outside component to their game .... a good side step .... a very solid left foot

I would go as far to say that Carlton curtailed Carroll's development by playing him as a sub .... kid looked like an emerging gun in the early games this year ..... TV pundits seemed to think so along with you own supporters

It was a very strange delisting ..... a kid showing so much promise to all of a sudden not being good enough

Brisbane actually wanted to keep him and had an offer in front of him but he wanted to be traded back to Victoria.

Crisp was also drafted as a rookie so spent a while breaking into the side, but he eventually did in his third season and put together six strong games to end the season before he was trades (averaging ~20 disposals/game off HB and showed a lot).

I don't see Carroll having any of the weapons Crisp has.

He is only 21 and that can change with time and in a new environment - and good on him if it does - but I'll believe it when I see it.

"Emerging gun" is very generous. On the fringes with no standout quality and no clear path to a greater role is probably more accurate.

With list spots tight at the club and a number of younger mids coming in over the past few weeks, I'd say the right decision for all concerned was made.

You could argue that he was mismanaged by Carlton playing so many games as sub ... that said ... he unfortunately always had more experienced preferred players ahead of him in the midfield pecking order.

Blues obviously think Jagga, the Campos & Lord are better depth going forward but they may also face the same problem of displacing the more preferred experienced players ...... even when they aren't getting the job done

I am not sure that's true. Most footy pundits probably couldn't pick Jack Carroll out of a lineup.

At the moment he's an absolutely unremarkable footballer with very few real strenghts to his game. Maybe that changes in a new environment, wait and see.

Right now he's certainly not an "emerging gun" unless the benchmark for that is extremely low.

I expect 100+ games as a saint, solid AFL quality mid who isn't a star but plays his role at the standard required, week in week out.

Wish him well, just not against us.

Martin , Cotchin , Prestia , Lambert , Edwards , Graham

Rotations mean players get rotated but are effectively mids that rotate through the foward line and bench
