The AA squad selectors care about names. Crisp isn’t ‘big name’ enough for AA apparently.
I don’t buy the ‘big name’ thing, although yes Crisp is 100% stiff.

Nick Haynes, Brad Sheppard, Rampe, Dunkley, Mccluggage are far from big names, yet they made it.

I think it purely comes down to the fact that its a hard job to narrow down the best players in the league to a list of 40. You can’t fit everyone in, as a result, every single year, regardless of ‘Collingwood bias’, players from all different teams miss for whatever reason. Theres only so many spots to to round.

It sucks Crisp isn’t an AA, as i’d make the argument he deserves a spot in the final 22, let alone the 40, but it doesn’t change the fact he is a gun.

Just imagine being an Essendon supporter, zero players selected. Add to that, crying over Saad missing out... when a far superior player in Crisp was left out

Why doesn't he get more love?

His stats are elite, doesn't lose 1 on 1's, takes the game on, he's definitely in our top few picked.

Spot on. The guy is a gun. But many outside our club don't know it for whatever reason.
He has just about everything. line breaking speed, Raking left boot, Good overhead. Can lock down on smalls like Betts & Bruest etc & can also go one on one with taller opponent. Not to mention he is as durable as they come. Love Crispy.

All those players are higher profile than Crisp aside from maybe Haynes, and that’s debatable. They’re all players that get raved about in the media while Crisp never gets a mention. Joel Selwood is a prime example of getting in to the team on name alone. He’s done it at least 3 times. Last year he got in because, and I quote Luke Darcy, “It didn’t feel right not to have Selwood in the team”. Selection has become a joke, players only get in if they have the profile to match with their good year.

I’d make the argument none of them are high profile players at all. Especially not Haynes. Then again, maybe i have a different definition of High profile.

Yeah i get that, but that is one example. That is an absolute farce, a complete joke that he was selected, but that doesn’t happen all the time.

Anyways agree to disagree... I don’t think its got much to do with profile. Many lower profile players have made it before. Crisp may have missed due to flying under the radar & not being front of mind due to that, but I can almost guarantee ‘profile’ is not part of the selection criteria.

A lot of players seem to have to do an ‘AA apprenticeship’ though, by that I mean be stiff a couple seasons before they actually get the nod. I’ll go out on a limb and say Crisp is an AA half back next year.

Some serious Underrating of Sheppard going on in this thread. He is elite in his role & 100% deserves an AA. Head and shoulders above Maynard at this stage of their careers, and I love Maynard.
Wouldn't have thought he's that much better tbh, I do agree he would have him covered but head and shoulders better I dont think so. Suppose you could always ask jack darling after Maynard gave him a bath a couple months ago.

Brad Sheppard has been one of the most reliable Hb’s for years. Maynard is young, only really starting to hit his straps. Come back to me in 5 years and i’d bet Maynards better, has more potential.

But right now, Sheppard is well above Maynard. Maynard is still proving himself, sheppard has proven himself for years.

Crisp needs to improve his decision making under pressure and clean up his disposal by foot. Has way too many direct turnovers and clangers in games, no doubt finds plenty of it but it’s that next step he needs to take.

Part of the issue it’s hard to really rate as selectors quite a few on the panel.

Some across as quite dumb.

Would it not be better for all the 18 coaches getting together and selecting the team.
Surely be a better panel then having

Ling, Frawley, Richardson, Darcy.... amongst others. Nothing particularly inspiring with that lot.

Some clubs are also “represented” by more than one selector.

Geelong: Ling, Hocking
Richmond: Bartlett, Richardson (Frawley also coached them).

Imagine if they had a Collingwood background selector? Knowing the AFL they’d ask Mick Malthouse to be that person.

The Panel Of Selectors:
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan (chair) Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Steve Hocking, Glen Jakovich, Chris Johnson, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson and Warren Tredrea.

Funny how we have the second best defence in the league but somehow they can't even find room for perhaps our best defender even in the squad. I'd take the AA with a grain of salt it's become basically a midfielders award really.

Does that say more about how they work as a unit rather than anything specific about any individual within the group?

On the Saad front, he started the year a lock-in but injury combined with form curtailed his chances. He was magnificent on Anzac day against us and had many outstanding games in the first half of the season.

Jack Crisp is under rated. Pure and simple.

For me, he should be in any discussion for AA. Though it’s a hard tough narrow field to get in to. As it should be.

I’d think he was as good (better) than Houli but keener observers might differ. At least Jack is in the discussion.

Agree on Saad.
Was in real discussion for a position but fell away enough not to get included. Fair call overall.

Not really, for example if you put Crocker in the same situation you'd get a completely different result for output.

But we've essentially already done that, not Crocker per se but look at the players who have rotated through the defense this year.

It includes Roughy, Moore, Langdon, Howe, Scharenberg, Crisp, Maynard, Aish, Greenwood, Noble, Quaynor, WHE, Appleby, Madgen, and Mayne yet has continued to function despite the revolving door of players going through there.

That's 15 player in a squad of 48 who've played in our defense this year. The defense is the beacon of the 1 soldier out, 1 soldier in system working.

The same Saad who was lucky last week not to have 7 kicked on him?

He did get his arse handed to him didn't he? To be fair I thought he was hampered. Saad's form went from awesome to ordinary within the space of 10 weeks; he started the year a weapon.

On Crisp, I felt he was magnificent but not yet AA. He will be though if he maintains this standard over the next year or 2.

It's the same with any position on the ground really, differs to opinion though but if you sit back and think about it let's say De Goey or checkers in the forward line, they stand out so therefore they get more plaudits then Thomas or Whe yet the forward line is still functioning to a reasonable degree. In every position you have players that standout in that area whether it be midfield with grundy, pendles or treloar you forget the role players of Phillips, wills or Sier for instance. This is a similar situation Crisp does good things in defence more often then let's say Aish, Madgen or apples hence he gets more noticed and stands out as a crucial reason our defence can perform so well. Just my opinion though take it however you see it.

Interesting view.

I don’t see that myself.

I’ll look out for it. But I find him very reliable and a good decision maker.
