Fair enough, Darling isn't leaving, you would have to pay overs to get him and I'd imagine you are looking for someone a bit taller. My issue was with the constant "Masten is a crab", "Masten wouldn't get a game with us" type posts which are one eyed and ignorant, the Crowley comparison is bizarre as they can't really be compared , but Masten has averaged 27 touches a game this year with quality disposal and would be your best entry inside 50 outside of David Mundy, I'd imagine he may get the nod over a Sutcliffe type at the very least.

Yes and no...

Freo have some good inside mids in Mundy, Barlow and Fyfe. and to a small degree Deboer, crowley, clancee pearce and Nic Suban can play as inside mids.

Masten, would not be on Freos 18 but definitely in the 22. Both Masten and Priddis are your teams 2 best inside mids as they both average 26 disposals a game. Priddis gets hounded on your board for some reason. Maybe lack of clean delivery despite being a good disposal gather I dont know...

But for Jack Darling...It pains me to say it I would want him, he would be played in the half forward line as a 2nd tall with Pav. I just think the price is too high to get him even if he was on the trade table.

Can't be bothered arguing so will leave it at this - if you think Crowley tagged masten good luck to you. Yes I acknowledge he was opposed to him but it was a shoot out not a hard tag and the stats from the match further prove this point.

If Ibbo, Mora or Clancee are fit Sutcliffe gets the vest or is out, Sutcliffe played on a Hb flank in the GF would you trust Masten there? No doubt he has improved especially his kicking but he had half the contested possessions of Fyfe and Barlow and because of his height he gets seriously exploited when dragged forward by an opponent (assuming he has one).

Wow! How many times can you get it wrong in the one post, except for maybe him not going anywhere. He's been going nowhere all season except maybe to the physios every time he throws his neck out staging fro cheap frees.

1. You'd need 10 of him to get a look in at Fyfe and even then, naaaah!
2. Masten wouldn't replace anybody in our midfield let alone be a walk up start. Who would he replace? Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe, Pearce, Mzungu, Hill? Seriously? If Freo really want somebody who can butcher the ball all day, they can get me at half the price.

You've made it a funny thread though. Bordering on hysterical.
 
Masten has improved from where he was a few years ago.
As a high draft pick (3?) even Eagles supporters would not be happy with the return they have received from him in the past. What little I have seen and heard about him this year he seems to have improved quite considerably but he would need to maintain this and even go a few steps higher to justify the fact he was a high end pick a few years ago.

exactly.
masten has improved to become a serviceable player, but not worthy of the pick 3 they wasted on him.
remember, they lost their greatest ever player for pick 3 & Kennedy. Kennedy is a star, but they really messed up with pick 3 & constantly try 2 justify it.
Back 2 darling. can't see us getting him. thankfully

RE: Masten being a screw up, it wasn't that long ago Freo fans laughed at how we got it wrong picking Masten over Palmer. How did that turn out?

Anyway, why 'thankfully' not getting Darling? Just don't like him or is a 21 year old forward who has kicked nearly 2 goals a game from his first 3 seasons not good enough to make your side also?

darling is a very good player.
it is his character that I take issue with.
if he was in our squad he would be playing.

Makes you wonder why there are so many WC supporters coming onto a Freo board trying to convince us that Masten really isn't a crab. Racking up lots of possessions really isn't an indication of his worth. Kerr racks up of lots of possessions when playing in derbies and Lyon doesn't even bother putting even a loose run with player on him because his possessions don't have much impact these days. Masten is in the same category.

Top tier players like Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow are so far beyond him its a joke and second tier players like Pearce and Mzungu don't rack up big numbers because their roles don't lend themselves to that. They do play their roles pretty well and that's their value to the team. Comparing numbers without the proper context is meaningless.

Anyway, if those WC think he's so darn good, keep him! keep him close and don't come here trying to shop him. I can't see who from our midfield I'd want to replace with him.

A player is only as damaging to the opposition as the way they execute their roles.

Muz did this really well.

Just remember west coast won the 2013 gf on paper but failed to make the finals.

I continually read about how west coast has waaaay more talent than freo. I'm happy for their supporters to continue to believe that. It generally leads to their frustration and angst about why the hell they're not making finals!

Seriously doubt any exchange would go through, as much as we could use a talent such as Darling sans ducking and diving.

West Coast have been very capable at making good trades and holding onto key players (except Judd), so if a deal was made it would probably end up being us who are paying overs.
 
I think we could be a chance of getting McGovern, on a purely 'could we get it done?' side of things but Darling just won't happen.

Whoever said above that we'd have to trade Fyfe probably wouldn't be too far off. They absolutely love Darling and he is worth more to them than just his on-field performance.

We have Mayne who is a better overall player. We don't need another third tall who is bog average when actually playing on defenders of any capability.
