Pros:

After half time Grimes really started to look and play better, he was able to make correct decisions and float around the backline taking marks and ordering his troops.

Cons:

However before half time Jack looked unusually ordinary. He kicked out on the full, missed targets, and caused turnovers that led to opposition goals.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, many players have poor games occasionally and his pre season has been amazing and suggests that he could step it up again this year so of course he will be selected next week.

Pros:

Grimes looked better from the word go this week. He was able to create opportunities from the backline, intercepted marks and switched play really well. His disposal efficiency was up on last week which is a good sign that he improved because last week his problem was turning the ball over.

Cons:
He still turned the ball over too many times for such a skilled defender and on occasions kicked to a risky option on the kick in. So if in doubt he should have bombed it long out of the backline or let someone else like Davey or Tapscott take the kick ins.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, he showed improvement from the week before and it wasn't really the backlines fault we got smashed or turnovers occurred on the kick ins.

Unfortunately due to not being able to watch much of the game(approx. 10 mins) I can't really list any pros or cons.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, his stats showed he was more than just useful in this match and should have a good game after we come back from the bye to play West Coast.

Does anyone have any news on Jack?

I do!!! :p

JK, he says he'll be fine for pre-season.

Jack Grimes 2011 Review:
Todd Viney said:
Jack unfortunately got injured and missed the majority of the season. He remains a really important player for us. Jack’s a great size to play in the midfield or half-back. He also has very good leadership skills and we’re excited that he’ll get a good pre-season into him and return next year.

# 16 – Jack Grimes

grimes_jack_261297_l.jpg

Expectations for season 2011:

As always, expectations of Jack Grimes were high leading into 2011. Everyone knows the talent he has, and everyone was hoping for an injury free season that allowed Jack to show off his undoubted ability and leadership qualities.

At a minimum, 2011 was to be the year that Jack Grimes stamped himself as one of our most important players moving forward, and you could go as far as to say that 2011 was potentially an audition or sorts for the captaincy in the not too distant future.

Key Statistics:

Season

Note- all stats skewed by being injured in first 5 minutes of his last game.

- Games = 6
- Disposals = 19
- Goals = 0.2
- Marks = 5.3
- Tackles = 1.8
- DT/SC = 74/78

Overall Performance:

2011 was yet another year ruined by injury for the unlucky Jack Grimes. He managed only 6 games before succumbing to a nasty foot injury- the same kind that ended former Cat Matthew Egan’s career. Prior to his injury he was working his way into some fairly ominous form, accumulating lots of the ball and providing plenty of his customary fearless intercept marks in defence.

His kicking skills were questioned by some after some ordinary clangers against the Swans in round one, and his next two games weren’t fantastic by his standards either. His opening three games saw him walk away with hauls of 23, 20 and 16 disposals and some questionable kicking efficiency.

Rounds 4 & 6 saw Jack get back to the sort of form we all know he’s capable of, accumulating 27 disposals in consecutive games. His game against the GC was fantastic as he bossed the half back line, and he was one of only a couple of players to hold his head up after a terrible team performance at Subiaco the following week.

Unfortunately that was pretty much it for season 2011 for Jack, as he went down in fairly innocuous fashion in the opening few minutes of the round 7 demolition of Adelaide at the MCG. No one could have predicted at the time that he would miss the rest of the season with a career threatening injury, and it left a bitter taste in the mouth after a massive win that would have otherwise been a perfect day for the MFC.

As he only managed 6 games, it’s not possible or fair to rate Jack’s season. He still managed to win the Ron Barrassi medal for leadership despite missing 16 games, which just goes to prove how highly regarded he is.

Where to go??

Well getting himself 100% fit is the only thing Melbourne supporters are hoping for at this stage. Well maybe not quite, we’d all love him to dominate 2012 and become the player we all know he can become, but realistically he should be aiming to overcome his injury and stay on the park as much as possible next year.

Had he not missed ¾ of the season we might be seriously discussing his name as a captaincy contender for 2012 onwards, and despite this he is still a (very) remote chance. Jack is well overdue for some good luck, and the football Gods owe him a lot of favours. Here’s hoping that 2012 is the year he gets repaid.

Article: Melbourne's Jack Grimes puts year to forget behind him

To think (of) my last game, May last year, then look at everything that has happened now - and there hasn't even been another game since then - is pretty crazy.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity and the faith they've put in Jack and I. It's huge by the club.

I'm feeling really confident with where my body's at. It's a whole new medical and physio department and, speaking to them, they're really confident, too.

They've given me a lot of confidence I can play 22 games and hopefully go beyond that, too.

MFC: Ready to rise

"I feel like I have experienced as hard as it can be and I know that we are going to have that feeling like we are never going back there ... this club is never going back to those days.

"As hard as it was, I'm really glad I've been through that ... you learn so much about yourself and the club."

MFC: Grimes to wear the famous No.31

MELBOURNE co-captain Jack Grimes will take on the club's famous No.31 in 2013.

"We arrived at Jack Grimes," Neeld said. "We believe he has the characteristics and the Melbourne heritage. He is a lifelong Melbourne supporter. We thought it was the obvious choice."

MFC: Pre-season update: Grimes to Tapscott

31. Jack Grimes
Unfortunately, Jack has had a hampered pre-Christmas period, with a couple of niggling injuries, which hasn’t allowed him to perform from a football point-of-view. However, his rehabilitation has been strong. He continues to be one of the genuine leaders in the group.

MFC: Season of change has started: Grimes
Co-captain Jack Grimes says there is an air of anticipation and a different feel around the club now that the players have returned from their Christmas break.

The runner-up to Nathan Jones in last year’s best and fairest award said he was “loving being back” knowing what’s around the corner next month: Melbourne’s first NAB Cup encounter on Friday, February 22 against North Melbourne and Richmond at Etihad Stadium.

MFC: Grimes learns and looks ahead
DESPITE humid conditions, two rotations down and two backmen out, co-captain Jack Grimes was still able to take some positives from the 25-point loss to Gold Coast at Southport on Saturday.

Grimes said the Demons started well and played with good intensity, but a lapse in the second term proved costly. "We felt like we trapped it in our half and we got off to a good lead. But there was a 15-minute period in the second quarter where we gave away our lead, and we didn’t have enough intensity around the footy,” he said.

“Going into half-time we were reasonably equal, but come the third quarter, the Suns just capitalised on their opportunities a lot more than what we did. It felt like we were having a crack and trying to do the right things with the ball, but it was just paying off a lot better for them than it was for us."

MFC: Staying united imperative: Grimes
CO-CAPTAIN Jack Grimes says it’s imperative the club remains united and doesn’t fragment on the back of two shocking losses to start the 2013 season.

Speaking after Melbourne’s 148 point loss to Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night – the club’s third greatest ever loss – Grimes said coach Mark Neeld demanded his group stay tight in trying circumstances.

“To be honest, there wasn’t much said at all about the game [from Neeld]. It was about how we respond as a group now,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“The main message was that we can’t fracture off into our little groups or go off by ourselves – we have to get through this together, including the coaches and staff, [and] as hard as it is, including the supporters. We want to get through this as a club.

“That’s the last thing we’ll be doing as a footy club – splintering off into our little groups.”
Short piece, but a good'un...speaks well.

MFC: Grimes signs new three year deal

CO-CAPTAIN Jack Grimes will remain with the club until at least the end of 2016, after the club announced he will sign a new three year contract on Thursday.
Grimes said the new deal “all happened pretty quickly” after his manager and general manager of list management Tim Harrington locked in the next contract on Wednesday.
“The club has been through a fair bit this week in the last couple of weeks, but I’m definitely backing them in all the way,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

MFC: We must back it up: Grimes
ON THE BACK of Melbourne’s opening win of the season, co-captain Jack Grimes says his side must back up with a strong performance against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba this Sunday.

Speaking at AAMI Park on Monday, Grimes said after his team couldn’t just rest on the fact it had produced a 41 point win over Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

“We know that it’s only one win to start the season,” he said.

“We’re definitely not thinking that’s the one result we wanted, and now we want to relax.

“We really want to build on that, and it’s not going to mean much if we go out in a week and put in a poor performance. [We] really need to back it up and take that belief into next week.”

(I hope this gif rule doesn't mean that I also have to add the disclaimer that I agree with and echo Grimes' statements, he's a good captain; if so, I agree with and echo Grimes' statements, he's a good captain. :D)

I was searching around a bit and discovered that apart from a "should we trade him and what would we get" thread created by Striker in a slightly pessimistic mood, our former captain hasn't had a devoted player thread since 2013 - which is concerning since, in a BigFooty sense, his profile has fallen well below the great Toump of Power fame.

So Jack Grimes: I have been exceptionally bored during the preseason so have even read all the player profiles in the kids zone on the MFC website. There's nothing much of interest there - even he seems to think he is a bit dull really - except I did notice that while most players list Simpsons as their favourite cartoon as a kid, Jack's was Bananaman. I was impressed. I ****ing love Bananaman.

Another thing about Grimes - I find myself saying uhoh every time he has ball in hand and pauses to weigh up who to kick it to. I can't stop myself even when re-watching a recorded match for the 15th time that I know we win

Hoping for a big season from Grimey - and he needs it as he's OOC this year. He's one of those quiet, unassuming types you want to see go well.

There's a lot of excitement about our younger guys coming through, but if Grimes, Trengove and Lumumba get back to somewhere near their best, and Watts actually realises some of his potential, that will go along way towards making as a much better side.

I like him, though his decision making sometimes scares me. But I get the feeling he is totally aware that he sits on the cusp of selection - by all accounts he's been turning himself into the second fittest guy in the AFL so he's definitely planning to fight for his career. Also I loved his goal against GWS in round 23. He looked like a 10 year old unwrapping a PlayStation.
