Delisted Jack Grimes

Grimes reads the ball in the air better than anyone else in the team. If we are going to play him and continue with the awesome zone where nobody mans anyone up ever I don't get why he isn't in defense rather than take your pick of guys who have no idea what is happening.

However if the club thinks they can add acceleration back into his game then bloody oath you'd give him another year .. if he gets acceleration back he stays for a few more after that because he's a much better footballer than Grimes

Yeah I tend to agree.
Hope he can somehow find a turn of speed because he was a good instinctive footballer.
Will be interesting to see whether the club can make the tough call if he doesn't come good though to chop 2 ex captains in the same off season.
 
Roos flagged before the season commenced that Grimes was playing a completely different role this year, and I'd like to think he has enough credits in the bank to find his feet in the seniors with this role. We're not playing off for a spot in the finals this year, and we've already sacrificed winnable games by prioritising development, so given his first game was decent, and his second wasn't disastrous, why not give him a third?

Sentimentality shouldn't play a part in list management but I'm inclined to make an exception in this case.

Grimes has more than earned his spot in the side, and giving him two games before leaving him in the VFL for the rest of the year doesn't sit too well for mine; it's actions like this which reinforce the idea that football is strictly a profession with no room for romanticism. And if that's the case then supporting this club is kind of pointless, because there's always going to be a bigger and better deal available for the Hogans and Petraccas and Olivers and Brayshaws on our list, salary cap or not, so what's the point?

Call it a Hail Mary or whatever but maybe a little goodwill and loyalty to our servants might be repaid down the track?

I don't mind this.

Certainly like the fella and wish him the best whichever way it goes.
The fact of the matter is, new role or not, if he can't cut it at AFL level then unfortunately, racking them up in the 2's doesn't count for much.
Agree he was good last week and not great yesterday but he's no Spring chicken either.
He's 27 and has just played his 100th game through obviously injury and indifferent form.
The emergence of some good kids (with some future guns still in the 2's) would suggest that Grimes will be a depth player at best.
The club might be ok with that but Jack may not. And that's ok.

I agree with your second sentence but the first is a bit rough. The club should be holding the door open for him and shouting his taxi fee given the way they butchered his development.

Grimes was my favourite player back in the day. Fantastic defender at his best, as we know. How times change. He was awful on Sunday IMO. Terrible decisions, terrible disposal.

That said, as Toump Ass said above I wouldn't be against giving him another shot at it this week. There's not much to lose really, Grimes vs Bugg/Stretch won't make or break the team v Eagles in Perth.
 
A very good one on one medium defender who had no trouble finding his own ball, though his disposal thereafter let him down somewhat. Then along comes some dickhead who decides to make him captain of the team that he was destroying, he cops a few injuries, and then along comes some other guy who decides he doesn't want one on one defenders anymore and tries to make him into something he isn't.

I really feel for Jack, but perhaps he belongs in another time.

Yeah not shocked. No point hanging onto him for potential trade value as he's a free agent. Thanks Jack and good luck

We have Hibberd and Melksham coming into the side, while Hunt, Salem and Jetta all well ahead of him playing similar roles. Was a no brainer unfortunately. I like Jack, he can find the footy and do a reasonable job 1 on 1, but he is a poor user of the football and a poor decision maker. Great character to have around the club, but he was becoming a liability and we clearly have half a dozen guys in front of him for a game now. I do hope he gets picked up by someone else though..

Not here to argue if he is worth a place on your list.

Doesn't delisting grimes make it harder for him to get a contract elsewhere. i.e. if he was still on your list he could be picked up as a free agent next friday. As a de-listed free agent he has to wait about a month? It seems strange.
