Gunston nominated Hawthorn and didn't want to go anywhere else.
Besides, he's hardly the sort of player we need more of. We need midfielders. Gunston looks alright, but it's waaaaayyy too early to be saying we made some sort of blunder in not going for him- he hasn't proven himself fully yet.
Sure Gunston is a good player and Hawthorn have done well to pick him up but we have also done well in the forward-line with Hurls, Cameri and potentially Gumby & Danhier.
If we lack anything , it is a forward-line structure for we still too often get the ball across the middle and have no one leading.
Gunston, Burgoyne, Guerra and Gibson are good players who really play a role, do have to hand it to Hawthorn, they target their men and they land them.
Offloading your trash like the Shotgun for upgraded draft picks probably helps!
Well, not sure if that was the case. IIRC Hawks convinced him that he should nominate them.
His old man is / was a board member. Rekon we would have had the inside running if we wanted him.
Anyway, he looks a nice talent but so does our guy who we picked at 19. Will be interesting to see how it turns out. Am confident it wont be another Rioli debacle though.

I reckon the Hawks had a contract before him a long time before the end of last season, and a sizeable one at that. Given there was nearly no conjecture about him going to your club (where his father/grandfather had been involved), then I think his manager more or less informed the 9 other Vic teams that he wasn't interested.
