Go with Lukosius we'll regret it otherwise, pick up a quality young midfielder in next year's draft.

That’s exactly right. As good as Walsh is, every year there is another one of him. Last year there was Cerra and Dow, McCluggage and Taranto the year before and Parish and Mills (albeit an academy player) the year before that. Show me another Luko or Rankine.

Will be disappointed if we take one of the kings (another tall).

Dangerfield said if a club overlooked Walsh, it would be at their own peril.

“I would not lose hold of Pick 1,” Dangerfield said.

“Sam Walsh, for mine, a good Geelong Falcons boy. I think he’s the next Joel Selwood.”

“If you look at his statistics, they’re one thing. He averages 30-odd possessions per game,” Dangerfield said on Fox Footy.

“But it’s just the way he plays, how composed he is and the leadership he possesses.

“If you’re a side that’s lucky enough to pick up this young fella, he’s going to play for a very, very long time.

“He’s just the complete package, I believe.

“He did some training with us and was really impressive. Hopefully he can find his way to the Cattery. I’m not sure that’s going to be all that possible though.”

Lukosius a lock to go pick 1. Just depends if the crows can get their hands on that pick!

I think Lukosius is a lock for pick 1 for sure. I can't see any club with pick 1 getting anyone else. Yes he might be a Jack Watts, but he could also be Nick Riewoldt

Brisbane does not like this. :)

Most of us wouldn't mind it too much. Smith probably suits our midfield better and I'd love Rankine.

Walsh seems similar to McCluggage but not as skillful.

We've got enough young midfield talent for now anyway...our issue is not enough mature gun mids to lead them.

Rankine is the the type of player we need...a dangerous medium forward.

With Curnow could be the best forward due in the comp. Has to be an amazing offer to trade 1.

Agree and disagree with the first part. Our biggest priority definitely is bringing in established mids to help with the kids, but we still probably don't have enough kids developing in the middle. Most of the top sides over the years have had at least 3-4 A grade mids, look at the following mids from long term successful teams of the past decade:

Sydney - Kennedy, Hannebery, Jack, Bolton with help from McVeigh and Mitchell (before he was traded)
Hawthorn - Lewis, Mitchell, Smith, Sewell, Hodge
Geelong - Bartel, Ablett, Selwood, Kelly, Ling

At the moment we have Cripps as a genuine A Grader, Dow looks like he'll follow suit, Fisher might become an A grader, but could also become a solid B. SPS had his breakout game, but are we certain he'll be consistent with that? Kennedy looks like he'll be a good workman, not elite. In order for us to have sustained success, we'd need to be certain that all of those guys are going to be A graders...and I'm not certain of that.

Rankine looks like he could be a star, but he also gives off a risky vibe, in terms of attitude and go home factor. If we had a few more emerging mids in mix, I'd definitely say he's worth taking the punt on, but I'd rather us stick to something more urgent and perhaps safer and go for Walsh or Lukosius.

Walsh is an extraordinarily highly rated kid. People will tell you they come along in every draft. They probably do, but you are hopefully not in a position to take them. Talls come along regularly too by the way. Walsh is a mad Brisbane fan. You may be 2 years into a period where it looks like players don't want to exodus back home to Melbourne. But how confident are you that that will hold up. Things change. Fagan gets head hunted by another club and the new man sucks. Raynor gets a $2m a year offer from North Melbourne and is the first ever player to take them up on one of their offers. It doesn't take long for things to go bad.

Right now, the Crows need to scramble and position themselves to hopefully take some of 4-5 South Aussie kids. Not because they are the best 5 kids in the draft but because presumably we can lock them in for their careers. Walsh is to Brisbane what these 4-5 SA kids are to Adelaide and Port Adelaide. You deserve everything that comes your way if you overlook Walsh for Smith or anyone else.
