Player Watch Jack Lukosius

The problem with Lukosius and also Marshall is that we pay for them in both salary cap and draft/trade terms as though they are high quality key forwards when in actual fact they're just unreliable fringey third tall types that might kick a few one week and then not get a kick the next. These players can be useful (eg Thurstans in '04) but gee you wouldn't want to set your forward line up around them.
Selling the farm for 2nd and 3rd talls is far more port adelaide than selling the farm for top echelon key forwards/drafting them.

When was the last drafted key tall to get an AA for Port Adelaide in that position?

Noticed for Georgiades' goal, Luko was the dummy wrestling with his man, and Georgiades lead from behind the contest to mark it.

We need to see all of Lord, Luko & Georgie up forward to really see what it looks like. I didn’t see that last night. Lord came on late.

Listening to Cornes before the game it sounds like Lord is barely on their radar to use as a third tall forward. He even suggested Hinkley wanted to trial one tall forward and that Lord’s main role would be a ruck chopout.

I would give up on the forward thing and just play him in the Houston role. GC have already worked out thats his best position. The commentators mentioned during the game that JHF was frustrated that Luko wouldn't lead at the ball.

Either way we cannot win a Premiership with him on the list.

Yep, idk if this is how Luko usually plays the forward role.

If Luko refuses to lead, you may as well play Esava in the try to outmark his guy position.

Lord rucked because we don't have a backup. If Visentini and Soldo were there they probs play him forward more.

Very lackluster first outing by Jack. Looked like he was thrown around the ground a bit and couldn't settle. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as our forward line adjusts with the new players and gameplan

His goal was nice though, he flushed a 60m kick with extreme ease.

We'll probably know by round 5/6 if he's a bust

Jack is the type of player that needs space to be effective. If he gets it he will be great. He also needs more time to settle in. We were all hoping for a change in game plan that hasn’t eventuated yet. Hopefully after that first outing it gets tweaked a little so we don’t get scored on out the back so easily, and we have a bit more space.

There is no "tweak" in the world to allow for that.

The only fix is a complete overhaul starting with the philosophy of what's required to not only compete well but to win and win ruthlessly. Then it's about absolute minimum standards expected, and that's now well and truly ingrained throughout the club. No club has as many cheaters, pretenders and what not as we do.

Ken is going to die on his hill persisting with this abomination, his ego won't allow anything else to disturb his 'vision'. We've seen it now for god only knows how many years, how many assistants, how many players.

His job won't be complete until he's completely changed the very fabric of our club (with help from others) and then head back home to Vic where they'll treat him as some footy guru that was let down by everyone else. He'll get a cushy AFL job (as reward for murdering our club) and live out his days happy he gave his best.

Tweaks were for about 10 years ago.

The problem is luring key players out of Vic or out of the temptation of choosing a Vic club. Unless they're from SA originally, it's unlikely a top echelon player of any key position will head to Adelaide. Same goes for coaches unfortunately. It's the imbalance that's haunted the AFL since inception.

Dyed in the wool south Australian's don't like to hear it but you can't ignore the pattern.

Third tall ? Lord ? If we don’t use Lord, oppo defenders are going to have a feast on Georgie & Luko. Maybe we can use Rioli to crash the packs.

Players I get it, as far as coaches are concerned, there are only so many AFL teams. A coach, whether assistant or not, will move wherever. I guess Tassie are in deep shit then.

Assistant coaches are far less likely to take an interstate job over one in Vic. Living in Melbourne has greater networking opportunities, bigger football culture, plus it's easy to switch clubs for a better offer without moving from their family home/kids schools.

Currently across both SA teams, there's one assistant coach that wasn't originally born in South Australia and that's Tyson goldsack.

Reading that sounds so depressing. We're going to have to pull something out of our arse up forward to be competitive against top 8 sides.

Pretty crazy to be writing him off after one match simulation.

It's based on five years of looking lacklustre for Gold Coast including under a ruthless three-time premiership coach who clearly wasn't distressed about losing him. There's nothing to suggest that Lukosius can do anything other than play as a tall flanker (forward or back) based on his AFL career so far. Make no mistake, he will kick hauls of 4-5 goals from time to time, but in big games and against strong opponents, it's looking unlikely that he will be the "cake" we need as another poster described. You can only go by evidence to date. He doesn't compete relentlessly enough to be a CHF and right now we need a CHF more than a tall, skillful but laconic flanker. If Lord comes good, then Lukosius as a flanker becomes more acceptable. Still it's a high price to pay a future first round pick (that may be inside the top 10) for a tall flanker.

Im trying to think of a player who looked to lack intensity and competitiveness for as long as Luko then went on to become a proper KPF.

Can't think of any.

There's still time but he needs a rocket.
