If I were in charge of Carlton's football department Carlton would have played finals this season.

The value of a draftee in the 10-20 range needs to be factored into the cost when trading an established talent. A second round pick is great value for a player you expect to play 100 or more games for your club.

This is why I think first round picks, particularly top ten picks, are off the table almost always but second round picks are on the table almost always.

If you always traded your second round pick for a best 22 player who was going to play 100 games for your club rather than taking it to the draft it would only take a few years for you to be well ahead. Granted there will be players taken in that draft that others will point to as missed chances but they will overlook the other 20 players who didn't get their careers off the ground.

Play finals, like the Dockers?

The Carlton that last qualified for the finals on their own in 2011, yes.

The Carlton that has won as many spoons as finals this decade, in the era of the expansion teams coming in too.

The Carlton that traded away their mature talent, positioned their remaining mature talent out of their best position in the first half of the year to give the juniors a go at it.. suddenly more competitive when that changed, go figure.

You mean trying to build a list to be a flag contender, rather than a perennial mid table side?

Yeah go figure

Read the headline, but didn’t watch the game hey?

Geez, even David King could’ve given you a better insight into how Carlton changed their ball movement and structures, beyond “duh, Teague is playing Murphy and Curnow on da ball now”.

The very reason we took a stand

instead of what some others do and cheat the salary cap, stained forever

Lacking consistency is selective hard stance, hence why no one takes you seriously

Not sure what 20 odd years ago has to do with the current climate, if you want to go back in history, I guess you could also gaze at the trophy cabinet

They offered him a contract, which he rejected.

They chose to delist him out of respect given he’d provided 8 years and 150+ games of service.
Don't be silly. Carlton took a player from a other club so obviously they are the WORST and Carlton are COOKED

I accused Carlton of intentionally performing worse with a view to holding out their hand for extra priority picks in this draft, just as Gold Coast did, securing further elite talent and then flicking the switch next season in a mysterious example of spontaneous development... fixed up that real quick hey..

Everyone in football saw what was happening but it took the Carlton supporters getting upset enough to change it.

The fact is all clubs get access to one first round pick a year and the more they can add on top of that the better each moment can be in the game as their player in the contest is slightly better. Carlton are about to get another for free and after the AFL gave them a boot up the bum to avoid losing a lot of membership money its looking really good next season for blues supporters.

Um did you seriously just say you "accuse" Carlton of intentionally performing poorly for priority picks? If so, take that back. That is plainly incorrect. Our coach got sacked for our poor first half of the year. There was nothing intentional about it.

Also, when we beat your club at your home ground without cripps, curnow and McKay, were we intentionally trying to lose?

Pathetic troll.

Edit. Wow you're a moderator as well and you are trolling opposition fans by saying their team was essentially tanking. Give yourself a thread ban. How is this relevant to the discussion about Jack Martin?

Carlton played Fremantle after the train was put back on track. It was absolutely intentional, next time you see Chris Judd ask him how he felt about it.

Jack Martin is another elite player Cartlon will have for next season for free, it's a massive win.

Hang on, hang on. Don't side step. You just basically said Carlton were tanking for priority picks. That is just absolutely ridiculous and unfair trolling. How can you say a club who sacked their coach mid season are tanking?

Oh yeah sure, I'll ask Juddy next time in run into him...dumb argument and dumb "evidence".
