You really gotta lay off the cool aid

What could go wrong 1 million bucks. 5 year contract for a guy living away from family in a rebuilding team, injury riddled. what could go wrong...

Good luck blue boys

Posted this in the Demons thread but worth re-posting here. It’s time our club took a stand in this type of situation. A lot to play out here regarding Jack Martin.

This is a huge test for our club. An opportunity to bring in a talented and highly skilled outside mid/small forward has just fallen fortuitously in our lap. Exactly the type of player we are crying out for, for such a long time.

Jack Martin is currently a good footballer who has shown he has the capacity to be very good and quite possibly become elite at AFL level. He has clearly not enjoyed living and plying his trade on the barren and soulless confines of Metricon, but you can imagine his delight at being able to strap on the guernsey of a traditional Victorian club and weave his magic on the MCG in front of true footy fans with genuine passion. This is a young man who will relish such an opportunity and rise to new levels of output and performance.

This is a cut throat competition, won and lost just as much by clubs on the margins of decisions they make off field, as those that are made off it. Carlton will no doubt try to bully us and will probably scheme with Martin’s manager to try and get us to baulk at calling Jack’s name out in the PSD, but we must not be cowed by these tactics and do everything we can to convince the player that his future lies at the Melbourne Football Club. Bring in the heavy hitters by all means - Goodwin, Richo, May, Kolo and of course Nev. Hell, get other past indigenous Demon stars like Flash Davey and Wizard Farmer involved if it might help in any small way. Just do whatever it takes within the bounds of reason to get this bloke over the line, or at least open to a change in the landscape.

Don’t be put off by media reports, the money is there if we were prepared to pay $2million to an injury prone Jamie Elliot over four years. 600k or even 700k per season might seem a high bounty to pay for Martin but consider the opportunity cost at not having to cough up a pick for him in the National Draft, not to mention boost to club morale and the extra memberships such a bold move would generate. Sometimes there are intangibles when calculating the worth of a player that go beyond pure statistical analysis.

God knows we have overpaid players before who have not produced in the red and blue. Players with far less ability, skill and blue sky potential than Jack Martin.

The bottom line is we need this player and he is going to become available to us at no cost in trade via the PSD. Regardless of the noises made by Carlton or his manager, we must call his name out at pick 2 if Gold Coast don’t re-draft him at pick 1, then back ourselves to welcome him with open arms and oversee his transformation into committed, all-in star of the Red and Blue.

Huge test for our Demons this one. So often in the past we have wilted at these moments. Unwilling to put cojones on the line and demonstrate the hard edge that the more successful clubs have. Now, here we are again, about to step up to the plate with a gilt-edged opportunity to to recruit a talented footballer ideally suited to our needs.

What are we going to do? What are Bartlett, Pert, Mahoney, Goodwin and Co truly made of? Same old same old ... or something new ... something better. We’re about to find out.

Go Dees!

I knew he’d go. Was just giving youse all a rev up.

$1 million a year for a C-grade forward flanker to go with drafting a kid with a wrecked knee at pick 17. Blues fans are kings of putting positive spin on ordinary decision making.

What changed?

It could be me but I view the Sharp trade (giving away an early pick next year for a mid second rounder) and the Jack Martin situation as an example of what sets up Gold Coast for failure. They keep been giving these advantages or concessions so they dont have to try massively hard to make every post a winner. As a result they keep failing. If Gold Coast wanted to make a stand then they should have said they would never under any cirmcunstances trade ith Carlton again if they refused to make a decent offer at the trade table for Martin. Instead they make a trade in the draft after Carlton acted like flogs in their trade negotiations.

Carlton talking up the recruit?

Carlton offered up a second and a third, but that was nowhere near enough for the talent in question.
If you think Carlton are talking him up, what do you think Gold Coast were doing via their actions?

Have you thought this through?
They offered a future second in a compromised draft according to the interview with Gold Coast post trade period. Even if a third was involved and the report is wrong thats sweet f all. Next years draft is so compromised you will be talking picks in the mid 30's for an early second rounder traded in. Considering Carlton should climb the ladder next year a second rounder if you finish 8th or 9th gets you pick 45ish as more than half of the projected 2020 top 40 are already aligned to clubs.

Carlton certainly broke the flog metre in this trade period. Nothing to be proud of for sure. Yep we will play a player 800K a year and then offer picks that will be in the 30's and 50's. at best. They didnt offer anything remotely significant and about the same value as your average fringe 22 player. They are overpaying an average player so they get him for free only. Martin broke new ground in terms of an experienced player going backwards last year. It seems bloody obvious Carlton always planned to make an offer GC coiudnt accept, only to then pay Martin soo much that no team would match in PSD.

I think your getting Carlton confused with Peter Bell, the biggest Flog of the trade period.

Carlton did really well here, even if it took a lot longer than anyone expected.

Gold Coast prove yet again they are an utter basket case who will squander every leg up they are given.
How the hell is not making a trade that should have happened doing well? What they did was show the afl that they need to change the rules with the PSD. If incompetency at the trade table is rewarded the entire draft system will be broken.

Um no. You certainly broke new ground in acting like deadset morons and exposing that actually its the system that needs to be changed. Yep, lets be incompetent in trade week and then gain a benefit. Thats the systems fault.

He was always going to end up at the PSD. He was uncontracted and refused to sign a new one, he can't just be forced to pass on an income.

Carlton got a player they were willing to offer picks for, for nothing. That's a win for them.

If anyone is incompetent in this situation it is GC. No hope of him re-signing, wants out, knows he can walk to another club in the draft. They should have just accepted whatever they could get.

No they really shouldnt. Carlton offered a pick likely to be between 35 to 45. Thats not worth anything. The afl need to change the rules and make every player who cant be traded enter the National draft. If not every year there will a team that deliberately acts like they can destroy what the draft was set up to do in terms of long league equality. It really is time for the afl to get players to sign much stronger wavers where they have to argee to play for another team that selects them no matter what if a trade cant be organized and I mean that they cant even say that they dont want to play for another team, rather they say IIll enter the draft and accept where I go. They do that in the NBA with player contracts in terms of players not having to agree to go to other teams, so why cant we do the same thing that draftees with players who are put of contract and cant be traded so they have to agree that they will willingly play for another team.

Carlton offered what for the last several years has been around pick 20-23 and 40 odd.

Every year academy kids don’t go where they’re predicted to a year out and no one said GCS had to take those picks to the draft; points are going to be flying around all over the place next trade period. Fair enough GCS wanted to trade on their terms, but that doesn’t make Carlton’s offer a s**t one.

They also gave you pick 2 for Weller and virtually gave away Lyons to Brisbane for nothing...
In any case the AFL has got their back...more assistance?.. here you go...

Let’s be clear Jack Martin was out of contract and had walked out on GCS months ago, eventually Jack had to delisted himself to ensure he could exercise his choice to change the direction of his footy career we should all respect this basic right .
CFC chased a desired player, happen to have the cap mobility to accommodate him we’ve bided our time , I see nothing dishonorable.

Well done my club on showing up the trading system as a failure and more importantly we exposed Carlton as being the same club that learnt zero from being caught cheating

well done Mark Evans and Craig Cameron

Yep, you certainly did show that you are a failure at trading, both in the trade period and the draft. buffoons!

Forget this compromised draft stuff. No one knows as fact as to how it will pan out and if it did as you say, so what?
You have to accept that an early to mid second rounder is an early to mid second rounder and an early to mid third, an early to mid third.

Carlton rated Martin and put forward a fair offer. You say Martin went backwards, right? Then why the claim for a first rounder. A first rounder is reserved for premium talent. What you're saying doesn't make sense.

What we had here was a President wanting to make a point he couldn't carry out and you call Carlton the flogs?
Think about the facts and come back with reality and not emotion,.

Only failure in what should have been an easy trade was your clubs inability to negotiate “something” in return...ball was in your clubs court..they knew Martin was gorne....however facts are they persisted with ridiculous pick demands...hope Evans and Cameron have learnt something.

Are you 3? I ask this question not in a trolling manner more the fact the team you support did the same thing at the trade table. Poor guy had to sit a year out of footy.

Question for Carlton's fans. Do you think that SOS would make the same decision next time? I personally doubt. He was genuinely shocked that Suns did not accept his offer. It was very stressful time for Martin and his partner. You don't want a player you trying to get to go through PSD. This is the last thing players want to go through. Not good image for future trades.
