Delisted Jack Mayo

Quiet game for Jack from the weekend - 5 disposals - but at least kicked 1.1 in a somewhat positive sign.

Not the best day for footy, so #OTTNO.

Aaron Hamill-

“I don’t think Jack got outmarked – not that there were many marks out there for the day – but we like how he’s always learning his craft.

Some of positioning down the line was strong for us, and he’s still learning, but I thought he competed well.

He’s developing nicely in certain areas and I really like where he’s going with his game.

He hasn’t played a lot of senior footy, especially in these conditions, so I think Jack’s showing signs every week that he’s taking steps forward and he’s not going backwards.”

Mid-season draftee Jack Mayo featured in a new role along the wing, utilising his building engine to cover plenty of ground and present as a linking option for his teammates.

Mayo’s unconventional height for a wingman (194cm) allowed him to also serve as a hit-up target for the Zebras coming out of defence.

The 19-year-old finished with 18 disposals, three marks and two tackles in what was the best performance of his six-game career.

13d (11k, 2hb) + 7 marks for Jack along with 1.1 for the weekend v WBull 2's.

Some positive responses amongst BF scribes;

Mayo’s going to be a real player, everyone else delist and start again.

Having said that he was the best of the saints players along with rice and mayo.
Mayo obviously has improvement in him.

Having missed* the previous game, young Mayo responds with 17d (11k, 6h) & 5 marks v Essendone Ressies.

"Mid-season recruit Jack Mayo covered plenty of territory to finish with 17 disposals as he continues to build his endurance and ability to have an impact. "

Got some good early mentions on BF, before the side flatlined for the day;

Mayo is a good size and moves pretty well, think there is something worth persisting with there.

Mayo going awesome around the ground. Has a very good field kick.

Mayo has delivered to very good inside 50s for nothing. Seems our forwards can't mark a simple kick

Mayo will be a player for us imo
If he gets a good afl pre season in next year plays mainly the twos and beefs up a bit he will be nice to add to the 22 in 2021

Mayo has to be in the bests if not BOG

Battle is a very good analogy although I think mayo is more your big CFH who roams the ground.

Reminds me a bit of a taller pav.

14 disposals (10k, 4hb + 3m) for Jack on the weekend in Sandy's loss to Port.

Disappointing to see he kicked 0.2 for the match, making it 3.7 for the year.

Hopefully something to work hard on and get improvement on his conversion (no-Dicko) for 2020 & leads to an AFL debut.

Last game v Northern Blues this week in VFL, hopefully he goes well.

I dont know anything about this kid but his improvement in such a short time is impressive . Maybe he have found a beauty in that mid season draft . Some players take a bit more time to make it , you only have to look at Parker , Wilkie , and Marshall as examples . Not every player is top class at 18 . It does make you wonder how many more of these sorts of more mature young players are out there .

Mayo joined the club in this year’s mid-season rookie draft from WAFL club Subiaco, spending the season in the VFL.

“We’re really happy to have been able to secure Jack’s services prior to this year’s National Draft,” Saints List Manager James Gallagher said.

“He’s already improved a lot across his time in the VFL and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can produce next season after a full pre-season.”

Jack Mayo may have been the eighth ‘Jack’ on the Saints’ playing list, but he was the first signed as a mid-season recruit.
The rookie-listed Saint adjusted to the rigours of VFL football under the watchful eye of Aaron Hamill, while also applying his trade along the wings and as a hit-up target coming out of defence.
A promising young forward from Subiaco, the 20-year-old booted 50 goals in the Colts during 2018.
If he’s able to translate that form into the red, white and black, Mayo will be the perfect condiment to the Saints’ attack.

Greatness Starts Somewhere......and Jack MAYO ......This is your Year....2020......in the words of Jean LUC......."Make it so!"

(Hoping those few capitals don't offend the ever so delicate sensibilities of the plebs.)

Just in 'CASE' another Trekkie reference.....FAR Q. ha ha ha!!!~~ All my fondest regards to Droop and Copped pr0n. Although quite childishly i diud think they could come back with Oh Pathetic 1...but its always good to be ahead of the curve. HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AT BIGFOOTY!!!!

STRENGTHS: Marking, goalkicking, skills, vertical jump, speed
IMPROVEMENTS: Durability

SUMMARY: After missing two and a half years of football with knee injuries, Mayo returned with a bang in 2018. He won the WAFL Colts Leading Goalkicker Award with 50 goals from 20 games, was named full forward in the WAFL Colts Team of the Year, finished equal third in the Jack Clarke Medal and sixth in his club’s Best & Fairest. When on song, Mayo is powerful in one-on-one contests, has speed to break away from his direct opponent – recording 2.95 seconds in the 20m sprint at the State Combine, and is a precise kick for goal. He also covers the ground very well and is able to take plenty of uncontested marks – with an 84cm running vertical jump – and is also a great field kick. The only query about Mayo is whether his past injuries are truly behind him.(from Footy Central)

Missing two years with KNEES.....its a testament to jis strength of mind and character to return at the level he did and do as well as he did.....effectively hes been back playing for 18 months.....gets picked up by SAINTS...first pre season with us...a 20year old who effectively comes on board as an 18 year old in Footy time. We are so looking forward to his blossoming....fulfilling his potential.

NOT SURE WHO DAD LOVES MORE

I know that many might wonder about the relevance of a picture of our rookie 18 months prior to becoming a SAINT... I just think as qualities go, Joel SELWOOD possesses many of the qualities I would love in a player that would aspire to contributing at our club. If he and his Dad have held SELWOOD in such high esteem hopefully some of those qualities might just rub off in the way he plays.

In my book Inspirations and Idols are indeed pretty good insights. If nothing else its a bit of background color.

St Kilda... eligible players for NAB Rising Star 2020

Best chance:
Max King. The sixth overall pick from the 2018 draft is back into full training after an ankle syndesmosis injury last year. Should form a strong combination Tim Membrey and Paddy Ryder in attack, once he's cleared to play.

Eligible players: Eight – Doulton Langlands (three games), Jack Bell, Ryan Byrnes, Jack Bytel, Oscar Clavarino, Leo Connolly, Max King, Jack Mayo.

The replacements: Who will step up to fill the void at your club?
Mitch Cleary runs his eye over the players expected to take their game to the next level in 2020. from AFL.COM

King's development was a major reason why the Saints didn't bow to Bruce's demands for greater career security and allowed him to walk to the Western Bulldogs. Another knee setback towards the end of 2019 cost the No.4 draft pick an AFL debut that will be only a matter of time as he shapes for this campaign with a greater workload post-Christmas. Ryder will have a role to play as Rowan Marshall's No.2, while Howard has shown he can play forward at Port Adelaide despite being recruited to play defence. Mayo is a left-field option in his first full season after being taken in last year's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Went to the Moorabbin session as well. Brad Hill will be a fan favourite. The other nugget that Lade gave was saying that we want players to play more to their strengths and recognise their own limitations more. Suggested a break away from too many "systems" and allowing players to play more freely. There were a few laughs about our only attacking strategy being "get the ball in the hands of Brad Hill".

As Hit the Boundary said, he mentioned Ben Long has done "some very good things" off half back.

Jack Mayo is seriously well-spoken, hope he makes it because he reeks of leadership and is obviously extremely intelligent.

Scratch matches during covid 19 ...hub at Noosa

Jack MAYO finding it tough at the moment...concussion and suspected knee injury......from saints.com

"It wasn’t all good news, however, with Jack Mayo going down with a suspected knee injury in the second quarter. The extent of the injury is yet to be determined.

Mayo was rubbed out of the previous scratch match before half-time with concussion."

All hopes, prayers and best wishes to emerge stronger and even more determined.

Rookie forward Jack Mayo will miss the rest of Season 2020 after rupturing his left ACL in Sunday’s scratch match against Carlton.

Scans confirmed the extent of the injury for the 20-year-old, who will return to his native Western Australia and spend two weeks in quarantine before undergoing surgery.

Chief Operating Officer Simon Lethlean said the club would continue to support Mayo during his time away from the Saints’ Noosa hub.

“It's disappointing for Jack to go down with such a serious injury," Lethlean told saints.com.au.

“He's had a bit of bad luck these past few weeks after suffering from concussion symptoms in our last practice match, but we've got faith Jack will bounce back.

"The most important thing for Jack is to be with his family in WA, especially in this current climate, and we'll continue to support him from afar through his recovery and rehabilitation."
