Do you bozos actually pay attention to the quality of the draft pool ??

This year, if you haven't got pick 1 or 2, you have lucked out badly, it's very thin on talent.

Therefore, you trade your picks for players who fill a strategic hole on your list, not take them to the draft.

Also, Carlton don't need any more 'fresh faced' players from the draft, we have squillions of them already. What we do need is players who have some senior experience already.
My comment has nothing to do with being opposed to trading the pick - on the contrary I am very open to trading it for the right deal.

It does though have everything to do with not getting a particularly good return on what remains a good pick despite the commentary surrounding the strength of the upcoming draft pool.

There is just no need to involve that pick to facilitate deals for Tom Cutler and Dan Butler, two out of contract fringe players who would realistically be obtainable without giving anything nearly as valuable as a top 10 pick. Nor is there any need to downgrade it so significantly to bring in Petruccelle, who despite showing some good signs in his first couple of years at AFL level, is far from a sure thing at this stage.

Petrucelle has two talents we are in genuine need of - elite speed and elite tackling efforts.

As a goalkicking half-forward, he would be a very handy addition to our list and would command a game every week as we are obviously in need of a small forward.

Naturally the attention and focus will be on securing Papley but if that doesn't happen, Petrucelle is a terrific fall-back option for the Blues.

I have since found out that the Eagles have #22 which they snaffled from the Swans so the deal should be #8 for Petrucelle & #22 which is far fairer and equitable for both parties.

The Blues could take #22 and offer it to the Lions in exchange for Tom Cutler (who is superfluous to their needs right now) & their second rounder (which should be somewhere in the thirties).

The pick in the thirties could be used in a deal with Richmond to secure Dan Butler.

If that all was done, the Blues would have turned #3 into Liam Stocker, Jack Petrucelle, Tom Cutler & Dan Butler.
Petch is far from elite in tackling efforts. In fact it's the opposite

Not even remotely close. If a player is offered $500k per year, that's slightly above average, and would warrant a mid second round pick at absolute best. First rounder would be if he was getting paid 700+, which obviously would never happen
No it wouldn't. Not for a young bloke with a tonne of potential.

Not even remotely close to being worth a first round pick. 18 goals in 20 games, please.

One thing worth keeping in mind, with the current NGA rules the way they are, we should be very much into future picks.
Really?

His first proper season, has shown he can kick a bag but has been mostly played in a defensive role because WC forward line is stacked.

He's easily worth pick 15-25 and I'd rather keep him. He and Cameron will be jets.

Because that's what happens when a player demands a trade. Despite being under contract, players typically get to where they want to go. Add in the fact that he isn't a star player, they would likely cut their losses if he is hellbent on accepting an offer from another club and get a reasonable return for him.
As we saw last year, this isn't the case.

Surely worth a third rounder at best. Runs around like a headless chook doing nothing. Anyone could score a few goals in the eagles forwardline the setup they have is fantastic

The Dogs were a few good umpiring decisions away from trading Griffen, pick 6 and a few million dollars for literally nothing. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. If we’d drafted Cripps with pick 9 it would have been a great move.
We traded the corpse of Ryan Griffen (was mentally checked out) and Caleb Marchbank for Tom Boyd. We couldn't fill our cap space even with over paying Boyd millions. We won the trade even if we didnt win that game and besides Boyd dominated the whole finals series. Boyd was fine as a player at the end and would have been one of the best ruck fwds in the comp for the next 5-7 years. You didnt draft cripps so it wasnt a good move.

Always enlightening to get input from a Melbourne fan who generally specialise in living their football journey looking through their rear vision mirror dreaming of what ifs. Pity “The Could Of Been Champions” are no longer doing shows as Chapman et al would have plenty of material to work with without stretching too far.

We have been having a sensible dialogue on the value of a fast young player who is in contract and has played the vast majority of games for a side that finished 5th as there is speculation that 1 or 2 Melbourne based clubs are chasing him. Thanks for attempting to hijack the thread but no thanks.
I think if a club offer him big money you don't need to worry about draft pick, his destination club will give up fair pick for him or walk out if they don't value him as much as you rated him.

I wouldn’t do it but I could understand a move that would see us turn pick 8 into Petruccelle and Martin which would be doable imo. We might have to throw in Adelaide’s third or something.
I’m still not completely sold on him though.

I’m not the one who hijacked the thread, you can thank mattwa for dragging it off topic by attacking me and bringing up the Josh Kelly trade. Also yourself - how does the team I support have any relevance to my opinion? I’m glad your ego is inflated by the success of a club you have made no differential contribution to but there’s no need to parade it here

What is he worth as a straight up for a single pick?
This is one of those ones where it's anyone's guess. Some might say he's shown enough potential to warrant something like Pick 20, while you could also argue that he's been relatively inconsistent and not really putting up huge numbers (10 disposals, 2 tackles and 1 goal per game isn't exactly outstanding for a small forward). On output, I would be hesitant to say he's worth anything more than Pick 35-40, but there's almost no way the Eagles would bother with that. It's one of the biggest reasons why I doubt he'd be leaving this year

So I thought it worth looking at the season and stats of Daniel Rioli at the same age as Jack Petruccelle.

I have used averages since Jack has played 19 games to date in 2019 and Daniel Rioli played in all the finals for a total of 25 games in 2017.

Highlighted in blue where there was minimal difference in stats and in green when one was more that 10% better.

Preempting responses, I would choose to Daniel Rioli over Petruccelle but that is not the point. The output and performance of Petruccelle is not that different to Daniel Rioli at the same age.

Now ask yourself, what would be the asking price for an in contract Daniel Rioli and how much less would Petruccelle be commanding?

Okay, based on todays revelations, the deal should be :

#8 to WCE
Petrucelle & #22 to Carlton
#22 from Carlton to GC
Martin to Carlton

Doesn't really have a defined role at WC. He's just the really fast we play up forward because we already have enough midfielders who are established. Cripps is handy around goals without being miraculous and is a work horse. Rioli, Ryan and Cameron are all natural forwards. You can play them inside 50 all day if needs be and they will find a way to work into the game. The talls do what talls do and provide marking targets.

Petch was awesome vs Port when he had 18 touches and kicked 5 but the ball was in our defensive half most of the game and he had space to work into. Not sure if counts as a Joe the Goose if you get the ball 80m from goal and take 3 bounces but he is unstoppable at that. Only two tackles per game is a bit of a worry. I'd like to see him follow Cripps' lead and become a strong inside 50 tackler. He's only 20 so hopefully we have a future for him on the wing where he can really use his speed. Lewis Jetta kicked 45 one year at the Swans playing wing/HF but like Petch isn't particularly useful just lotering inside 50. If he could be that sort of 10-12 kicks, 4-5 inside 50s, 2 goals a game player he would be a great asset.

He is a second year player that has broken into the reigning premiers forward line. How many draftees picked at 30 or later get a Rising star nomination?
The cats had two rising star nominees this year drafted at 36 and 57 and we finished H&A top. The pick 57 finished the rising star 5th placed overall. Last year we had a rookie selection come 3rd overall. Petrol is a decent prospect with some great trucks but not a huge statistical outlier.

Would love a combo of Brander & Petrucelle from the Eagles
If Daniher leaves, we should have some good picks to trade.
