Players having the ability to ask to be traded to a specific club is a joke, the club that you signed a contract with owns your contract and should be able to distribute it where they see fit.

isnt a contract an agreement between 2 parties?
How can they ``own" your contract?

And besides that.... aren't these players who request trades out of contract
What rights does the club have if there is no agreement existing between them and the player?

And so they can. Exhibit A: Cam McCarthy, who wanted to be traded to Freo last year. Should the players shut up and accept whatever fate the club decides? Hey boss, you wanted to see me? Yeah we've decided to trade you to Brisbane thanks for your service.

Bottom line is you may have the contract, but you can't buy their heart or mind.

I can imagine a GC/GWS supporter feeling aggrieved, but it's up to your clubs to create something that players want to be part of, and that takes time. Thus why you were both granted all sorts of special treatment to offset the talent drain down to football's heartland in the first place.

If you get it right, then players are going to want to play for you and want to stay with you.

geeze he's a nice size. good overhead. can use it well. has very good awareness as well.

the one knock is he doesnt seem to play with a lot of confidence, its holding him back. reminds me of seb a year or two ago, when seb found that confidence he was a totally different player.

i reckon he will get that confidence and go to another level

the McCarthy case he was still in contract, i.e. he had agreed to play for GWS on 2016. Therefore, GWS were able to enforce that agreement, so far as not allowing him to play elsewhere.

But this does not mean GWS own the contract... just that they are able to enforce the agreement that was made (at least some of its terms... they can not force him to actually take the field) because McCarthy had agreed to it

When there is no contract then the player has no obligation to the club, and can move elsewhere. Workers do have rights, thankfully

Within 20 months of Steele in either direction on the list:

Membrey: May 94
Pierce: November 94
Dunstan: January 95
Sinclair: Feb 95
Freeman: June 95
Billings: August 95
Templeton: August 95
Acres: October 95
Steele: December 95
McCartin: April 96
McKenzie: May 96
Lonie: August 96
Goddard: August 96
Coughlan: September 96
White: January 97
Rice: February 97
O'Kearney: February 97
Gresham: August 97

Pretty solid cohort, about 3 years apart in age and a lot of potential. Hopefully that's the engine of our next premiership side!

Tom Lamb would fit into this pretty well, he's about Coughlan's age. If he came cheap then he'd make a lot of sense to join this group. But he's another tall-mid forward, and it's not clear how much he's kicked on since drafting, so not sure if we actually need him.

And he's still contracted for next year too... :o

Enter Richo, stage left...

yep, so they dont have to trade him this year either
But sometimes when you have an agreement that is not working for you, you have to cut your losses...
Not much in it for GWS to hold him to next years contract...

Not really setting a precedent.. not too many players will start thinking that taking a year off is a great way to get out of a contract

Compelling argument. Too bad completely and utterly wrong.

Sensible analysis on BF I'm shocked, I'm new on your board but impressed already.

:) Assuning the deal gets done, I hope he earns a place in your best 22. He's the opposite of the baby face looks and a tough defensive mid. Looked good resting forward as an attacking option at times as well. Started this year with the club naming him Cal Ward V2.
I'm sure the selection of a younger Hopper and Matt Kennedy has a lot to do with him going. He was always close to selection this year and the reality is we are blessed with mids on our list, and they cant all fit.
If he can nail a regular spot I think he'll develop well, and the confidence will come.
Not a lot of hate for exes on our board, particularly those who've done the right thing and are leaving for opportunity, as he is.
Hope it's a win for him and for both clubs.

Knowing that Perryman, Setterfield and Mutch will also get drafted probably has something to do with his decision aswell.

Seems like he's a good mannered & top quality kid. He's probably known he's wanted to leave for a while now, but waited til not only the season was over, waited until after all formal club events like the B&F were finished as well. I like him a lot, & the Giants have done a terrific job with him off-field IMHO
