Steele will join an emerging midfield led by Jack Steven and he was also looking forward to working with Saints legend Nick Riewoldt.

"No guarantees I'll get a spot just yet, but I think there'll be a few more opportunities there for me," he said.

"Hopefully I can improve my game there and eventually become an elite midfielder.

"It's strange to think that I'll be playing with [Riewoldt], but it's also exciting especially because I think he can teach me a few things.

"It hasn't hit me yet. Once I rock up for pre-season, that's when it'd all going to hit me."

The hard-nosed midfielder still has a week off his left foot, which he had surgery on after he fractured a metatarsal.

He'll then start walking and was hopeful of being back to full fitness just after Christmas.

"As soon as I get my foot right there'll be a lot of expectation on me, but I'm willing to work hard to make sure I do everything ... I'll work my arse off once I get my foot right," Steele said

"I think I'm 100 per cent just after Christmas. I'll miss the first part of it [pre-season], but I'll be OK after that."

The Giants didn't want to lose Steele, who came through their academy system.

They offered Steele a two-year deal, but he opted to accept what's believed to be a three-year deal with the Saints.

I'm really excited by Steele - based solely on some YouTube highlights

His size is impressive

Best comparison I can make is to our own Acres - smooth mover, good hands, good at getting a handball away, strong overhead

Along w Stevens, I genuinely think our midfield now becomes a top 10 midfield

Having been a bottom 4 midfield the last couple of seasons

Still room for more quality, but a great start
