There was another unsolved serial killer case in London at the time, the Thames Torso Killer. There was a BBC documentary series about it recently with Lucy Worsley, although I haven't seen it yet.

Unlike some, I am not convinced that JTR actually stopped. Some of the murders in London could of been him including some of the Torso killings.

Canonical victims are simply a group of women who somebody has grouped together. Given we don’t know who JTR is, it’s highly likely this is wrong.

It’s also possible this was done to calm down hysteria.

This is meant to be one of the better documentaries on the case, although I haven't seen it for many years. Cheesy reconstructions, but you could say that about any reconstructions.

The Timewatch "Shadow of the Ripper" documentary is also good on the cultural background of the case. It's on BBC iPlayer and Dailymotion, although it seems to have been taken down from YouTube.
