God it’s offseason

Why are we so offended and precious?
Well we are football club with supposedly "elite" standards that needs to attract sponsors not a rock band or Charlie goes to Beerfest.

This isn't about being precious it's about the negative light it casts on a once great now mediocre joke of a club.

Let's put it this way.

It's now Sunday, February 3. If I said "I did such and such last Sunday", it would mean the Sunday a week ago, right? Sunday, January 27.

But if I said "I did such and such on Saturday", it would mean yesterday - Saturday, February 2.

And if I said "I did such and such last Saturday", it would mean the Saturday a week and a day ago - Saturday, January 26.

Ergo, if I did something in October, 2018, I would say "I did such and such in October" if talking about it now.

And if I did something in October 2017, I would say "I did such and such last October" if talking about it now. The 'last' would be redundant if I was referring to October 2018, because there couldn't be any other October I was talking about in the past tense. It's not like a day of the week that happens multiple times in the space of a year - there's only one October.

It all depends on your reference point.

Of course, you can say it the way people are taking it too. That's why it would be better for them to put October 2018 if that's what they mean, or October 2017 if that's what they mean.

I'm just trusting what C4 has said Watts' manager has told the club.

Not to get into a chronology discussion but if I said last Thursday it would mean three days ago.

Your example using Saturday would be more in line to saying last January, where it gets fuzzy

It's ambiguous, and really depends on the person writing/speaking.

That's why, as I said, it's best to just give the year to give context.

But if we had just won the flag
and we were going ok with all our elite standards..,
.... would it then even matter what legal fun a player got up to in his offseason?

Given the headlines that footage of a footy player snorting white powder off **** attracts, yes it would matter.

There's some difference.

Tolerance of Lou Codge drink driving on the eve of his third premiership in a row much much higher

The media are a bunch of vultures, will write anything to get clicks.

SPP last year, Watts now. Don’t care who’s reputation they ruin will their misleading titles and media coverage.

Yes they put themselves in the position for this coverage but would be nice to have some professional Australia football media.

We haven't and we haven't looked close for a decade.

There's no 'if we won the flag' because winning the flag is everything. That's what being a professional football club is all about. It changes almost everything.

It should never have been tolerated. Hodge could have killed someone. I do get your point though.

Let's not get carried away here. He had two or three beers and was low range. He should have been punished more for breaking the law and setting a bad example but he wasn't off his chops menacing the roads.

It’s a bitter sweet weekend for Melbourne’s Jack Watts. Despite his omission from the Demons squad for their round 7 clash with Hawthorn on saturday, he has been inducted into the AFL ‘Whipping Boys’ Hall Of Fame.
The ‘Whipping Boys’ award celebrates a player that cops the most flack in the AFL media and wider community. Particular emphasis is placed on players who can successfully piss off their own fans.
