I really just don't get it sometimes...

Yep he sucked today, but it was his 7-8th game, it was pissing down and he is 2m tall and he's put some upper body weight (not enough yet, but...) yes he is struggling with his ability to change directions.

BUT one thing Watts isn't; slow. He may look slow out on the ground, but that’s because of his size. I'd bet if Watts was at Geelong ILO JPod he would already be kicking bags.

Average losing margin in games Watts has played = 48. Hardly the stuff of forward line domination, but I'm sure some people will want to blame him for the losses.

Now all we need is for NicNat to go nuts tonight and you can lock in this board collapsing under the weight of stupid threads this week.

In one of the earlier posts today someone described Watts as a 'fainting goat' and it seemed distressingly appropriate :-(

I think it just goes to prove you can't dump a young kid into a non-function forwardline.

Feel a little sorry for him. I am sure he'd be doing a lot better at another club.

We may need to swap someone at the end of the year for a decent forward.

If Petterd goes to the GC (which I doubt he will) we're going to have to trade in a forward. As it stands now we'll be alright for next year. Watts, Petterd, Jurrah, Bate and Green look good as tall forwards, and Sylvia can play up forward too. Bennell, Jetta, etc make up the smalls. Plus we have a few unknown quantities in Tapscott, etc, so it's a work in progress, not something we have to fix immediately.

Although I have heard Mitch Morton is on the market...

Do you mean his obligatory 5 min cameo that ch. 7 put on repeat all week?

I love just watching him tread water in dead space out on the wings at subi…

Honestly, if we can say that he took a good mark and kicked a good goal most weeks for the rest of the year, while getting more consistent with his intensity, then I'll be happy with his year.

Yeah, likewise.
Though I'd love for him to have just one great game, where he kicks 5 goals, take a few strong contested marks and applies some much needed forward pressure. :D

Has a lazy look about him, not sure if he is, he just looks it though

Travis Johnstone-esque..

WTF!!! what has jack shown to warrent that he will be a gun? you posters are making me sick

I see what you did there ;)

Ive got no problem with Watts yet. Keep playing the kid. Hell be fine in a few years.

The crux of it.

We may need to swap someone at the end of the year for a decent forward.
Putting it mildly. The club has had it's head up its ass for the last 5 years with respect to our forward line.

Bloody hard to get any sort of decent forward come trade week unless you roll the dice on a fk up like Fev - and how often does a situation like that come along.

But given that we're likely to have a pick in or just outside the top ten we'd at least have something to offer if the right player came along. But who?

Good question, you'd think with the amount of picks GC have that any early picks we have would be at a premium.

Having said that we don't need a superstar we simply need someone who is drilled as a modern forward and has a bit of size and movement.

Whether it is PSD, trade or mature age rookie who knows, it isn't easy but you at least have to have a go. We have no hope of getting a forward of the calibre of Fevola but we may get a solid bodied forward for even a mid range pick.

Otherwise, a Ben Griffiths type kid would be great if available in the draft if we're doing it young. There are some likely lads in the SANFL.

Butcher won't stay at Port for ever but he's planted there for the time being.

Got a feeling Petterd will walk in any case.

If only we got rid of Jamar after 2 years. The dude showed nothing...

Honestly, I'm sick of people judging how Watts will turn out after 7 games. He's only older than Scully by 2 months, Gysberts by 3 months and Trengove by 6 months. He's young and under-developed and it will be a while before we see any consistency from him. At least he's shown some of the talent he posses against West Coast and Port. It's hardly a disgrace to struggle against Geelong and today was a bad one. Just give him some time!

atm he's a spud.... no point denying it

but in a few years he could be a star, who knows
you guys obviously took him at number 1 for a reason

and until he puts on weight and actually looks the part there is no way he will kick bags of goals, its just physics atm, he's getting outmuscled in the majority of contests

I want him to be a lead out forward from the goal square, he won't win the one on ones, but his speed should be his strength.

I'm not sold on him yet to be honest, what will turn my opinion is him going for pack marks, getting a ride and being more than a forward handball cog. Spirit and guts is what he needs to show to justify his spot.

Why so impatient? How many times do people have to mention that he is a tall player that will take 2-4 years to find his feet? (pun intended) and size? Sometimes I think that Melbourne supporters are his worst enemy... not the media...

Our forward line has been no good for a number of years, don't take it out on Watts.

I have complete faith in our recruiters ... they would have put enormous amount of time and resources into that decision to draft Watts at no.1.

But I haven't seen a lot of what the recruiters saw in the handful of games I've watched of Watts. Yes, he's taken a couple of good marks and looks like he moves well for a big bloke, but I haven't seen much at all to be honest.

HOWEVER - and this is the point every Watts-bagger needs to consider..... I WILL NOT WRITE JACK WATTS OFF UNTIL HE'S PLAYED AT LEAST ANOTHER 20, 30 OR EVEN 40 AFL GAMES.

Look at KPFs like Gumbleton and Hansen, they're just beginning to look at home at AFL level about four years after being drafted. Watts will take time too.

The above post. As long as Watts can play a significant role in the team, within five years I'll be happy. He doesn't have to be a superstar, just help us win a flag.

The question is does he stay in the team or get dropped? Changes this week will be tough.

Excuse my ignorance, but who is our forward coach?

Our forward line seems so unstructured - it's like none of our forwards (besides Green who obviously has experience on his side) know where or when they are supposed to lead.

I'd personally drop him back to Casey and tell him to run, run, run himself to exhaustion. Needs a bigger tank as well as stronger muscles.

Start preparing for next year now.

I don't think he should start preparing for next year now, in that if he essentially has one long preseason from now until march he'll be burnt out by rd1 2011.

I'd hope he gets a run at Casey soon, hopefully through a couple of rounds where their midfield is firing and he can get some decent delivery (unlike the last two weeks)

Dunno what Bailey's plan with him is atm, but he seems to lead up the ground too far and too often, and as a result isn't around to provide a target when the ball comes into attack.

I reckon he might take a trip to Casey this week or next, and maybe play 4-5 more games for the season with the Dees

Fitness
Foward line education
decent supply

Can't really comment on his performances until he has all 3.

His top line football coaching extends to 1 season of TAC and 1 and a bit with us, needs to be given the same time that gumbleton, franklin, kennedy etc have all had before he can be judged.

Excuses you say?

Clearly his kicking for goal is effortless, has shown good hands and can best opponents on leads, all good signs. His performances need no explanation, we clearly have bigger issues with our fowardline than jack watts right now
