The club desperately wanted to keep Gunston but with only a couple of hours notice he jumped on a plane and fled back to mummy's arms in Melbourne. He wasn't coming back.
Once he nominated Hathorn as his club, we were hamstrung. We could never get his true value because there was no competition for him.
The club had to work hard to even get pick 24, their first pick, as the trade value.
Noble and crew did an outstanding job with this pick 24 once the Gunston deal was done.
Pick 24 was traded to the Gold Coast for picks 27 and 31.
Pick 27 went to St Kilda for Tom Lynch.
Pick 31 went to Essendon for Jenkins and pick 41.
Pick 41 was used in the national draft to get Grigg
Sooooo, the end result of all this was that we ended up getting 3 players - Lynch, Jenkins and Grigg - for Gunston.
While we never wanted to lose Gunston, onve ot was obvious that we were, the club did very well to work deals that maximised our return for him under the circumstances.![]()
More accurately pick 24 got us Kerridge (Pick 27), Grigg (Pick 41) and Jenkins.
I'm happy with that.
We traded Maric for Lynch. I'm also happy with that.

Phil Davis is the one that is gonna hurt.
We lost Maric, Armstrong, Gunston, Davis.
The first three are replaceable. Even Gunston. Walker, Tip and McKernan or maybe Jenkins are three very good tall forward options.
Davis is an outstanding CHB and club leader. That is hard to replace, especially after he was Bock's replacement and Stevo retired.
What did we get for Davis?
Basically Crouch and Brown??
Did we use pick 10 and the Poaching Pick for Brown and Minidraft pick?
Buckley left Brisbane for the ultimate goal of finals success!
There may be a certain amount of karma yet to play out, for the young Gunston.
Honestly how good will it be if Bucks never wins a flag... the ironing in the fact he left 3 time premiership winners Brisbane to go Collingwood is hilarious...
Imagine a midfield of Voss, Black, Akermanis, Lappin, Power and Buckley...
I think adding Gunston to Hawthorn's forward line will make a huge difference to their overall forward structure.
Maybe even enough to take out the flag. Add Roughead and they're a scary proposition.
McLeod almost went there in 99 as well. Could've stopped Port's premiership.
Dangerfield said in an interview this week on SEN when asked about Gunston that he will be a very very good player and that Gunston has the best hands he had seen in terms of how cleanly he marks the ball.Jack will be very very good. Unfortunately you can bookmark it!
I think he will play out the square with Buddy moving up the ground....
Jack has very sticky hands and is smart around goals...
Dont be surprised to see Jack with a premiership medallion around his neck this year...
Oh and the question regarding who is Rendells greatest picks so far...
1. Davis
2. Equally Otten and Gunston
3. Sloane ( said would be his greatest, but dirty that he didnt pick him up the year before with the late Kite pick.....
Mckernan is still up there! Be patient....![]()
By the way Fergus Watts got badly injured (leg injury) in his first year at the Saints and that was his career.
Agree , Ottens was crap in his last few years at Richmond and Mooney couldnt get a regular game at North and he had been there for a few years.Ottens and Mooney were put on the trade table by Richmond and North respectively whereas Gunston and Gibson were very much required players.
Didn't he need to get his ankle joints fused together after his first year with St Kilda?
He did break his ankle and they couldn't get it to heel, then they found out he wasn't born with a plantar fascia. Whilst that's the little bugger (ligament) that causes problems for our players, it apparently is an essential part of running. They took 45 minutes pre-game strapping his ankle before he could go out and play and he couldn't train because he couldn't run laps.

Hey guys, just wanna say that I hate traitorous opportunistic pricks like him and Josh Gibson who turned their back on the club that drafted them without so much as a goodbye (both nominated Hawthorn while on end of season and pissed off to Waverley almost immediately) because they think they'll win a flag with that mob.
Good luck this season, I really hope Sanderson and Milburn will make a difference to your fortune in 2012 and beyond.
Give me a break. Happens to every club every so often. What did we get for Darren Jarman and Ben Allan all those years ago SFA thats what; and spent 10-15 years in the doldrums after it. Oh forgot we got nothing for Robran as well.

I hope Adelaide have a great year and I reckon they are a great club.
Excuse me?
You got Paul Salmon from Essendon for Darren Jarman.
You also got pick 11 in 1992 from us and coinsedentially selected Johnathon Robran with that pick.
You were fairly compensated for both players.
Alex...that enter-finger has beaten me again!
