Personally I do not lose too much sleep over what we don't have I rather focus on what we do have and with this in mind I was extremely satisfy with what we ended up in return out of the Gunna situation, in my opinion obtaining Kerridge, Grigg and Jenkins was job well done from Noble and co.

With this in mind I am very confident in that Kerridge will have a very strong and long career at the AFC, I also hold high hopes for Grigg and I believe that these two players alone will more than adequately compensate us for losing Gunna, Jenkins is the unknown factor in the deal and is an additional bonus if he comes good.

Just for the record, the trade was far more complex than what's been stated here:
Gunston + picks 53 and 71 for picks 24, 46(Joyce) and 64(CEY)
Pick 24 to GC for 27(Kerridge),31,68
Pick 31 for Jenkins and 41(Grigg)
68 was also part of Johnston trade.

In the end it was:
Gunston, picks 53 and 71 for
Kerridge(27), Grigg(41), Joyce(46), Ellis-Yolmen(64) and Jenkins

In then end I think we did alright, and I can see why we were keen to get the trade done early and settled for less than what we could have gotten, but we had bigger fish to fry than argue all week with Hawthorn.

Personally I think Gunston will hurt more than Davis, I worry a little about Davis durability long term plus CHB's are much easier to train up than medium forwards of the quality of Gunston. Hawthorn have done extremely well, but I also think we did well to make the most of a shit situation with Gunston. In fact I think we did really well with Davis, Armstrong and Maric in making the most of their departures, to set ourselves up for the future, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

To be perfectly honest, it wouldn't surprise me if Gunston struggles to get a kick in a forward line already dominated by Franklin and Roughead. There are days when Roughead can't get a kick such is Franklins dominance. It's not like Buddy stands in the goal square.

I don't think Roughead will do much for the first six or seven rounds he plays. It was a pretty serious injury and he is underdone. Hale is serviceable but no superstar. Rioli often goes missing and as a result pushes up into the midfield. Should still be plenty of opportunities available for Gunston, even beside Franklin.

As someone said before, its an uncomfortable thought that there is the possibility that he'll finish the season with a Premiership medallion.

The club desperately wanted to keep Gunston but with only a couple of hours notice he jumped on a plane and fled back to mummy's arms in Melbourne. He wasn't coming back.

Once he nominated Hathorn as his club, we were hamstrung. We could never get his true value because there was no competition for him.

The club had to work hard to even get pick 24, their first pick, as the trade value.

Noble and crew did an outstanding job with this pick 24 once the Gunston deal was done.

Pick 24 was traded to the Gold Coast for picks 27 and 31.

Pick 27 went to St Kilda for Tom Lynch.

Pick 31 went to Essendon for Jenkins and pick 41.

Pick 41 was used in the national draft to get Grigg

Sooooo, the end result of all this was that we ended up getting 3 players - Lynch, Jenkins and Grigg - for Gunston.

While we never wanted to lose Gunston, onve ot was obvious that we were, the club did very well to work deals that maximised our return for him under the circumstances.

2012 and Neil Craig were absolute disasters for the AFC football club. Anyone who thinks NC had a positive impact on the club is seriously deluded. He was a disaster. When Melbourne come to town and NC walks onto AAMI stadium, I will be really pissed off if the AFC supporterbase dont boo him with all their hearts. The real King of Spin should have been run out of town.

Davis will be a very interesting case. He should be a great get for GWS if only his shoulder recovers. The way it popped out so easily last time he played has to be cause for concern. If he can stay fit he'll be a ripper for them. We did effectively get Crouch for him though and since our young midfield is so weak we did pretty well to get out of a situation where the cards were stacked against us.


Gunston will be at least a good player for Hawthorn and at best a great player. It definitely hurts to lose him. Hopefully one of the players we traded in can take a step up to nullify the pain a bit.

And have we also given up on the SA Under 18's MVP at the age of 19 before playing an AFL game? I don't think you can yet classify Lynch, Jenkins nor Grigg as 'average', let alone all of them.

Your previous quote of my post was very selective because it ignored my real view on the situation, which followed.

Kerridge, Grigg and Jenkins is a good result given we traded under a handicap with Hawthorn. If even only one of those comes good it minimises the loss.

Where does that even remotely suggest that the 3 players equals Gunston?

Correct weight. Neither Neil Craig nor Nathan Bock deserve any semblance of booing when they return. Both offered very good service to our club.

Hey guys, just wanna say that I hate traitorous opportunistic pricks like him and Josh Gibson who turned their back on the club that drafted them without so much as a goodbye (both nominated Hawthorn while on end of season and pissed off to Waverley almost immediately) because they think they'll win a flag with that mob.

Gibson irks us North supporters because he was playing at Box Hill (Hawthorn's affiliate) and Hawks didn't want to have a bar of him. We rookied him, gave him a chance when nobody else did, elevated him and then left the way he did, didn't show a lot of character.

But, that is the way the cookie crumbles, better to have people of dubious character playing for someone else. Not sure it is ideal long-term to be filling your trench with the weak willed types.

I still think people misunderstood the move to staff. My own personal belief was that they knew the end (of Craig) was nigh, and instead of having the associated drama with the changing of the guard, it would have been easier to set up a timely handover on good terms (ie. to Bickley). They thought they didn't want to lose everything Craig had to offer, and made it easier for him to accept the inevitable by offering him a "life after coaching" position. In hindsight now, I think they realise that the push/jump actually did them a favour and enabled a clean slate and new/fresh approaches.

I totally get the anger directed at Davis and believe that people are entitled to show it in whatever way they see fit. My only question would be, what would you have done in the same situation?

As for Gunston, I don't wish him misfortune, but I am very disappointed in the manner he chose to leave. I won't be disappointed if he turns out to be a flash in the pan.



"Boo"ing former employees of the club is something that can be a bit of fun at football, and if everyone was booing him I'd probably join in the spectacle, but there wouldn't be any malice in it. Craig did everything he could for our club. As it turns out he didn't have what it takes to get us over the line, but it wasn't for a lack of effort or passion. He'll always have my respect for those traits, as much as it became painfully obvious he was not the main to take us to the premiership cup.
